Happy Halloween!

The spooks are out.

Another Banner Day at Clinton.com

Another yuge day of news and opinions, thanks to the FBI Director Comey's announcement to Congress that he was looking into further emails from the Clinton.com server because FBI agents found such emails on a computer owned jointly by Anthony Weiner and Huma Abedin, as a result of a probe into Weiner's alleged sexting with a 15 year old girl.

So what's new in terms of actual facts or actions. We found out that the emails were discovered 3 weeks ago in the course of the Weiner inquiry. It is reported that some 600,000 emails were found, of which some tens of thousands show metadata that suggests origins in the Clinton email system in a file labeled "life insurance". Hmmm. We found out, in the course of yesterday that the FBI needed a warrant to look into the suspect email because they were found in a probe not related to the Clinton emails. If Clinton wants those emails released she should ask why Comey doesn’t have a warrant yet/ Orin Kerr of the Volokh Conspiracy explains the legal problem: Was it legal for the FBI to expand the Weiner email search to target Hillary Clinton’s emails? By the end of the day, multiple sources were reporting that the FBI had obtained the required warrant. We found out that the FBI had an investigation into corruption at the Clinton Foundations, and that the Poobahs in the DOj tried hard to squelch it which has the FBI and DOJ Feuding Over Hillary Clinton Probe. Family feud: FBI, DoJ roiled by Clinton probe disputes. The FBI’s Clinton Foundation Probe. Althouse wonders Will the Weiner email cache revive the investigation of the Clinton Foundation?

Most of the chatter continued to center on Comey's decision to inform Congress at this point.
PREDICTION: “Comey broke precedent about announcing a criminal investigation near an election because he saw something disqualifying.” If so, Hillary may regret the demand that he release everything ASAP . . . .

Meanwhile, as to the timing, note this: FBI agents knew of Clinton-related emails weeks before director was briefed. Does this mean that the agents were afraid to tell him for fear of Loretta Lynch-style interference, like last time?

Professor: "Canoes Reek of Genocide & White Privilege"
A Canadian English professor says that because canoers are generally white men, the boats are a symbol of ‘colonialism, imperialism and genocide.’
I have yet to see a modern example of colonialism, imperialism or genocide carried out using canoes.

Misao Dean, who teaches at the University of Victoria, made her remarks during an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
You would think a Canadian would know better, given the importance of canoes in Amerindian societies.
“Certainly the majority of wilderness canoers are people who have a very privileged place in society,” she said. “They’re frequently highly educated people. They’re almost completely white.”
Maybe in your lily white university department.
“We have a whole set of narratives that make the canoe into something that seems ordinary,” she also stated. “But I think if you look a little further that narrative obscures or erases another narrative – and that narrative is about, to be blunt, it’s about theft and genocide.”
Well, societies who have to rely on canoes instead of battleships tend to be at a disadvantage, which is not to say that canoes can't be exactly the right tool for many other important activities or even recreation, if you live in a society with enough wealth to permit recreation.
Dean went on to suggest that all non-indigenous people rethink canoeing.

Judging by those statements, it seems Dean is a bit fuzzy on the actual history of canoes.
Well, duh.
While canoes are prominent in indigenous history, as Andrew Cross mentions in the tweet below, people from virtually every culture used some sort of canoe throughout history.

In fact, the oldest-known canoe on the planet actually came from the Netherlands. So much for Dean’s moral pandering on behalf of indigenous people.
What do facts have to do with the religion of the Social Justice Warrior?
Even academics chided Dean for her asinine comments, to which the self-proclaimed ‘old-school feminist’ cried ‘oversimplification and anti-intellectualism.’
Wow, when even the academics see the error, you know you've jumped the shark. The stupid prof probably saw some white men happily canoeing, and decided she needed to do something about it.

Beach Report 10/30/16

For Oct. 30, the weather was unusually hot, peaking out around 75, under partly cloudy skies, and with a slight southwest wind, which barely stirred the water near the shore.
Skye had a bonus she found this naive young lab to loom over.
The Great Blue Heron was fishing off one of the groins,
While the peeps (Semipalmated Sandpipers) combed the beach for goodies on their way south.
Fossiling was pretty decent. I managed 15, including this small, but nearly perfect Hemipristis (Snaggletooth) lower tooth.

And this nearly matching Hemipristis upper tooth.

I guess there was enough wind to fill his sails out away from the cliffs.
Fall is getting going, but is not well along here. The leaves are still thick on the trees, but most are still green, but there is some hint of color.

A Whole Lotta Developments Clinton.com

In the wake of the news that the investigation into Hillary's emails has been reopened by the FBI as more emails have been discovered on (at least) a laptop shared by Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner as a part of an FBI investigation into allegations of sexting with a minor, Say What? FBI With New Leads On Hillary's Email? I have the longest list of related articles ever. Bear with me as I try to makes some connections between them.

First, what new purported facts have emerged since yesterday's post? A few: FBI Found "Tens Of Thousands Of Emails" Belonging To Huma Abedin On Weiner's Laptop. That alone means it will be weeks necessary to sort them and see which ones have already seen the light of day. However, Huma Abedin Swore Under Oath She Gave Up ‘All the Devices’ With State Dept. Emails and has told people she doesn’t know how her emails wound up on her husband’s computer. We also found out that the FBI Never Destroyed Laptops Of Clinton Aides as they promised as part of pleas deals with Cheryl Mills at all. Well good. Why should they ever destroy evidence in a criminal investigation. And finally, and most weirdly FBI still does not have warrant to review new Abedin emails linked to Clinton probe. How can they not have a warrant to review the emails they found in child sexting investigation, and a separate investigation into the release of classified data. Breaking on Fox this morning. Weiner cooperating, and the FBI don't need no stinkin' warrant.

Now, reactions to the developments. First, it appears that Comey may have defied Attorney Gerneral Loretta Lynch in this revelations: Justice Department disapproved Comey's decision to tell Congress about renewed Clinton probe, James Comey broke with Loretta Lynch and Justice Department Traditions. And finally, a bit of lightness (and an excuse for some Rule 5) as Rain Falls on Hillary and J-Lo.
Hillary Clinton took to the stage with Jennifer Lopez in Miami late Saturday when the music superstar performed a free concert in the rain to encourage early voting in the battleground state of Florida.

The 47-year-old actress, singer and dancer whose toned physique appeared to defy gravity, powered through some of her greatest hits, including "Let's Get Loud" and "On the Floor" before an exuberant crowd who cheered and danced as rain drenched the outdoor amphitheater.

Clinton arrived for the last segment of the gig, after Lopez's ex-husband, Marc Anthony, had already performed. She enveloped Lopez in a bear hug, before thanking the former couple for their support.
She does look good wet.

The Jawshank Redemption

An article by an old younger friend of mine from the Smithsonian, Heather Soulen: Understanding shark behavior through science, suitably illustrated.
Last year marked the 40th anniversary of the movie Jaws, regarded by many as “the movie that changed Hollywood.” While true, Jaws shaped more than just Hollywood. With its ominous, adrenaline pumping two-note score and imagery of a bloodthirsty, torpedo-shaped predator with rows of razor-sharp teeth, Spielberg’s film shaped our perception of sharks.

After Jaws, fear of the unknown arrested us, and our lack of knowledge helped demonized sharks. But the winds are shifting. New research initiated by the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center’s Fish and Invertebrate Ecology Lab aims to investigate habitat use, migration patterns, and species interactions of four underrepresented shark species found in the Chesapeake Bay and along the Atlantic Coast.
Heather is in the midst of trying to switch fields from field biologist (she's a good one) to science writer. Go hit the original link to give her a boost.
The Atlantic Coast is one of the global hotspots for shark biodiversity, and with biodiversity being a vital component of healthy and productive ecosystems, this kind of research is long overdue.

“Sharks are a lot like wolves in Yellowstone National Park or lions in the Serengeti. They can be indicators of healthy ecosystems because they’re likely to be found in places that support large numbers of prey species,” said Matt Ogburn, the lab’s principal investigator.

Ogburn, post-doctoral fellow Chuck Bangley and their colleagues plan to catch and tag four species of sharks found in the Chesapeake Bay and along the Atlantic Coast: smooth dogfish (Mustelus canis), blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus), dusky sharks (Carcharhinus obscurus), and bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas).
Sharks are rare here in the middle and upper portion of the Bay. A few Bull Sharks get caught up here by commercial fisherman, and maybe a recreations fisherman, but they are pretty common at the mouth of the Bay near the Bay Bridge Tunnel.
“Right now there’s a very broad idea that certain sharks are here in the summer, certain sharks are here in the winter,” Bangley said. “But nobody’s really defined what temperature range they like, what salinity range they like, are they following certain species of prey, things like that.”

Their toughest challenge will be spending enough time on the water to find, catch and tag 80 sharks, 20 of each species. To get that water time, the team joined forces with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science’s (VIMS) Shark Monitoring and Assessment Program and North East Area Monitoring and Assessment Program. Five sharks have already been successfully tagged through the efforts of VIMS and the team, and tagging will continue through 2017 to reach the team’s tagging goals.
 I volunteer!
The majority of the sharks will be tagged with a special acoustic tag that taps into the Atlantic Cooperative Telemetry Network, a network of scientist-maintained acoustic receivers located along the Atlantic Coast. Whenever a tagged organism comes within about a half mile or less of a receiver, it transmits a signal to the receiver and a record for the location, tag number, date and time is logged. Ogburn and his team have already participated in the network through their cownose ray and non-native blue catfish studies.

While the information the receivers collect is useful, it’s restricted to the stationary location of that receiver. To understand more “day in the life” shark behavior, the team plans to outfit a few sharks with satellite tags that beam up location information when a shark surfaces anywhere in the world for 90 seconds or longer. Some satellite tags on the market can log temperature, salinity, and depth as the shark swims – valuable information for behavior and migration studies.
Small, long lasting, electronic tags that can radio home are revolutionizing field biology.
Social media and the internet are already helping turn the tide of how the public views sharks, in ways many never thought this possible after Jaws. Last year, OCEARCH’s satellite-tagged great white shark “Mary Lee” became an overnight Twitter star and made news when their website showed her track off the Maryland coast. Because satellite tags make collecting track data and sharing it online relatively easy, Ogburn plans to incorporate shark track maps to engage the public in his research.

“People are fascinated by [sharks] now more than they fear them. So when people hear that a shark’s in the area they’re more likely to run to the area with a camera than to flee from it,” Bangley said. “Gone are the days when the only good shark was a dead shark.”
I've featured a few "Mary Lee" posts.
But, beyond the gadgetry and social media, the team’s study has real potential to reshape the perception of sharks and their management.

“We hope to excite the public’s interest in the positive role of sharks in coastal ecosystems,” Ogburn said. “We hope that the data from this study, which will fill a local-regional data gap, will contribute to coast-wide shark fisheries management and conservation efforts.”
It sounds like a good project. Best of luck, Matt, and thanks, Heather.

It's That Low?

"Half of academic papers are never read by anyone other than their authors, peer reviewers, and journal editors."
"So what’s the reason for this madness? Why does the world continue to be subjected to just under 2 million academic journal articles each year?"

Asks Daniel Lattier in "Academics Write Rubbish Nobody Reads." I believe him that few academic articles are read and that they are written for the sake of the writer's resume. But that doesn't make them "rubbish." The process of writing develops the mind, and any given academic with his mind duly developed has a shot at benefiting colleagues and students who never read a word of it. And more importantly, there's something else, something that's the flip side of a negative point Lattier makes.
Ideally, the great academic minds of a society should be put to work for the sake of building up that society and addressing its problems. Instead, most Western academics today are using their intellectual capital to answer questions that nobody’s asking on pages that nobody’s reading.
What a waste.
Oh, I don't think we really want to put academics to work building up society and addressing its problems. It might be a very good thing to contain these academic types in a place where they won't do too much damage. It may be that we have marginalized these very intelligent people who live deeply in their own minds and conjure up new ideas because it's best to keep them separated and deactivated.
I do know that at least a few people read at least some of the papers I wrote, because they asked me about them in person, and I had hundreds of reprint requests. But I'm pretty sure that most people didn't get far past the abstract. I rarely did.

Half Naked Clown Disturbs Tennessee Traffic

Proving that Florida does not have a complete monopoly on weirdness, in a pre-Halloween warm up, Partially-nude female clown charged with chasing cars in Tennessee.
A woman was arrested Thursday after numerous witnesses called 911 to report that a partially nude woman wearing clown makeup was chasing cars and jumping in and out of traffic on a country road in Cunningham.

Candice A. Kreidel, 37, was charged with disorderly conduct, public intoxication and making non-emergency 911 calls.
Not Candice Kreidel

According to an arrest warrant, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the scene after "a series of calls about a white female wearing clown-like makeup, a stocking cap, and was either partially or completely nude that was running up and down Louise Road, chasing cars and jumping out in front of other cars."

While a deputy was on the way to the scene, 911 received four calls from Kreidel "in which call takers were berated, threatened and cursed," the warrant states.

When the deputy went to Kreidel's home on Louise Road, he found her in a sports bra, pajama-style bottoms, a stocking cap and wearing clown makeup on her face and body. She was also holding a beer.
Not Candice Kreidel
Alcohol was involved? I'm shocked.
When asked why she called 911 and berated dispatchers, she said it was because "they need to do their jobs."

Kreidel was determined to be intoxicated and a danger to herself and others and booked into the Montgomery County Jail on $1,500 bond.
I'm looking forward to the trial.

New FBI Email Investigation at Clinton.com!

Yesterday, James Comey, director of the FBI dropped a bombshell, perhaps nuclear into the last days of the 2016 Presidential campaign when he sent at letter to Congress that because of emails found in the course of an "unrelated" investigation, that he had found more emails pertinent to the investigation of Hillary's email, and that he was reopening the investigation. Federal officials told NBC News that the Emails Related to Clinton Case were Found in Anthony Weiner Investigation into charges of his having sexted with a 15 year old. Speculation is rampant, but the best guess is that Huma's lap top, unsearched in the original investigation (pardon me?) was found to have additional emails between Huma and Hillary, and some of them get to the motive behind the super secure Hillary Clinton basement/bathroom email system. Veteran journalist Carl Bernstein: Bernstein: FBI Would Not Reopen Case Unless New Evidence Was "A Real Bombshell"

But a little more interesting than mere off the cuff responses by politicians and other idiots, Megyn Kelly and Curt Gowdy had a real discussion:

I agree with this wholeheartedly. My politics have basically changed to be about only this about two or three years ago.

I have noticed, with great chagrin, that many conservatives support the Social Bullying Model -- the Social Justice Warrior coordinated group pile-on mass-shaming -- when it's someone else's ox being gored.

I don't. Enough. Enough of it all.

We had such happiness together

I hope that you'll remember when
Our love had just begun
I loved you yesterday and yesterday's gone

Rule 5 Saturday - The Other Raquel - Raquel Zimmerman

This week's Rule 5 bonus post is dedicated to Raquel Zimmerman (no relation to Bob). Despite the name, she is a Brazilian model. She's been in the digital bin for a few years, and I decided it was finally her time.
Zimmermann was discovered by a scouting agency in Porto Alegre, Brazil at the age of 14 and made her way to Japan and on to Paris. Shortly thereafter, Steven Meisel booked her for the cover of Vogue Italia, September 2000, and her modelling career began in earnest.

Zimmermann has done campaigns for brands such as: Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bloomingdales, Bottega Veneta, Cavalli jeans, Cerruti, Chanel eyewear, Chloé, Christian Dior, CK by Calvin Klein, Clairol, Dolce & Gabbana, DSquared², Emanuel Ungaro, Escada, Fendi, GAP, Gucci, Giorgio Armani . . .
and on and on.

Amusing random Raquel factoids:
Zimmermann was ranked number one on international model ranking website models.com from December 2007 until February 2010. As of April 2011 she is, because of her long run on the Top 100, ranked 14 on the Top Model Icons of All Time list.
She starred in the Lady Gaga music video for "Born This Way", where she was featured wearing designer clothing and helped give birth to a non-prejudice race from the "Mother Monster".
She reports that she practices the Transcendental Meditation technique
Being Brazilian, she's not particularly body shy, and there's plenty of hot NSFW material: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,  and 7.

140 Arrested in Access Pipeline Protest Violence

Dakota Access Pipeline Standoff Lapses Into Violence
A standoff between Dakota Access Pipeline protesters and law enforcement degenerated into violence Thursday when two protesters opened fire in separate incidents, wounding a “private individual” and narrowly missing a sheriff’s deputy, according to North Dakota officials.

A man was shot in the hand after being “run off the road by protestors,” according to state Department of Emergency Services spokeswoman Cecily Fong, who noted that the victim also was armed. A protester was taken into custody, the Morton County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.
In this HuffPo post, protesters claim the man fired on was a pipeline company employee and an armed "instagator." Protesters also burned his vehicle.
In a separate incident, a woman was arrested after firing three shots that almost hit a deputy, Fong said. As darkness fell, more than 100 protesters had been arrested.

“We do believe there are people down there that are peaceful and prayerful but we’ve also known from the beginning that there are some bad actors,” Fong said, referring to the hundreds of Native Americans and activists who’ve camped in protest of the oil pipeline for months. “The last thing we want is for anybody to get hurt.”

The violence erupted Thursday morning, when law enforcement began removing Native Americans and environmental activists from a protest camp they built on private land.  The site, known as Cannonball Ranch, will be used by Energy Transfer Partners for its 1,172-mile pipeline.
There is another camp on federal land, which the authorities seem to be in no hurry to clear.

Also today, arrest warrants were issued for two protesters who threatened journalists and trapped them in their car until police arrived:
Authorities say the Oct. 18 attack on the journalists involved protesters taking a reporter’s microphone, blocking a vehicle in which the journalists locked themselves, and shaking and hitting the vehicle. Law officers eventually rescued the journalists after they called 911.

That incident involved Phelim McAleer and Magdalena Segieda, creators of the documentary film FrackNation. They published video of the incident online last week. . .
Now imagine the Federal government's response if the Malheur protestors had behaved in a similar way.
