Who Gives a Hoot?

Ward Clark at Hat Hair, that's who, with the sad news of the week, Hooters Seeking Uplift Via Filing for Bankruptcy

Restaurants generally operate on narrow financial markets and have shockingly high failure rates. Foodservice in general is one of the riskiest small business models in the world. My father-in-law ran cafeterias for almost 60 years until he finally retired a few months before his 80th birthday, and he has told me many times how narrow the margins are in that game.

But when you have a business model that specializes in chicken wings, beer, and has an absolute lock on the 21-35 BroDude demographic - a model that hires as servers pretty, young women and has them in low-cut t-shirts and short shorts - well, how could you possibly mess that up?

Georgia's Dad Vince, a lifetime restauranteur and bartender, also warned his children (and by extension their spouses) from getting into the food and drink business.

But here we are, with the famous Hooters chain considering bankruptcy due to a debt crisis:
The casual dining chain is working with law firm Ropes & Gray to ready a filing, said the people, who added the plans are not final and asked not to be identified discussing private preparations. The court process would likely begin within the next two months, the people said.

The law firm they have retained reportedly has a good reputation, which may well help the famous chain; a little uplift can go a long way. Ropes & Gray may be able to bust a move in a well-structured bankruptcy settlement:
Hooters has faced liquidity issues as foot traffic has declined and has shuttered several locations. The chain sold about $300 million in asset-backed bonds in 2021, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

It's hard for me to believe that foot traffic has declined, but then, it's been many years since I set foot in a Hooters. It's not that I have any objection to the chain or its operating practices; I don't. It's just that there are no Hooters out in the Valley, so the opportunity isn't there. However, I do fully support the right of any business to stay abreast of cultural trends, and style their practices accordingly. That's what Hooters sure seems to have done; as I mentioned, they aimed at BroDudes and for many years they had a lock on that market.

Let's hope that Hooters survives this, so they can go on offering great chicken wings, cold beer, and... ample scenery. But food service is a harsh mistress. With a bit of luck and some restructuring, maybe Hooters can bounce back.

I can honestly say I've never been to a Hooters; one has never been convenient, but it seems like a solid business model.  Are they a casualty of COVID? If so, perhaps we should credit Joe Biden.

Homemade Root Beer

Sassafras tree
A week or so ago, in the wake of Tropical Depression (formerly Hurricane Debby), I was walking up the beach, and I caught a wonderful odor of root beer. Fallen from the cliff, or maybe even washed in from elsewhere was a whole Sassafras tree, with roots intact and washed clean of dirt. The roots of Sassafras are the original  source of root beer. Over a few days, I brought a few sections of root home. On Sunday, I stripped the bark off enough them to make one small batch of root beer, using (approximately) this recipe, Homemade Sassafras Root Beer.

As I said, approximately. The recipe calls for some spices. Our spices were kind of old, so we boosted them slightly. We didn't didn't have any allspice berries, so we had to guess how much of our old allspice powder to substitute, and I think I over did it a hair. The worst part was straining the resultant cooked root and spice mash. We tried coffee filters, but they kept clogging after only a few ounces of liquid. We ended up straining it through an old (but clean)  piece of t-shirt from the rag cupboard. That worked pretty well.  The best part about it all was how it made the house smell.

Yesterday, we got the final ingredient, the club soda, and actually mixed some of the finished root beer syrup. Not too bad! I think you can taste that we overdid the allspice, though.

Flotsam and Jetsam - Trump Banned in NY, Fined a Third of a Billion Bucks

In what must be the most absurd legal case in "our democracy's" history, Judge Engoron, who, having decided the Trump organization was guilty of fraud in overvaluing various piece of realty in the process of getting loans prior to the actual trial, ruled that Trump was fined $355 million, and forbidden from doing business in NY state for three years, despite the fact that the loans were paid off on time, and the valuations came with a warning not to rely on them (which, of course, banks don't). His sons were also fined $4 million each, just for being related to their father. Kaelan Deese at WaEx, Trump and associates ordered to pay $364 million in civil business fraud case. Flotsam and Jetsam - Republicans Out to Kill Me says Hunter

From NYPo, Hunter Biden whines media ‘trying to kill’ him, wreck dad Joe’s presidency in interview with Moby, "Want some cheese with that, Hunter?" Hat Hair's KT,  Hunter Biden: Republicans are "Trying to Kill Me."  At Am Great, Roger Kimball thinks The Son-Of-A-Gun-Number-One-Son Might Just Toss Pops Under the Bus "Pere is getting a little nervous." NewsMax thinks Hunter Biden Believes Taxes Are for the Little People. Fox, Biden repeatedly demanded wealthy pay 'fair share' while Hunter allegedly evaded over $1M in taxes. Cutie Pavlich at TownHall Has the List of Things Hunter Biden Bought Instead of Paying Taxes, drugs, hookers and porn subscriptions. The rest of it he wasted.

At the Free Bacon, Hunter Biden Whistleblowers Claim ‘Complete Vindication’ After Bombshell Indictment. "Biden case ‘would have died a quiet death’ without whistleblowers, attorney says." Sarah Arnold at TownHall finds Biden Caught In Another Lie. "Despite countless photos and records from Hunter Biden's abandoned laptop, Biden is holding on tight to his claim that he never interacted with his relatives’ foreign business partners." He's counting on the friendly press to provide cover.

Breitbart has another Poll: Biden Approval Rating Falls to Lowest Level Since He Took Office. "President Joe Biden’s approval rating has fallen to the lowest level since taking office, the latest TIPP poll found. Biden’s approval now sits at 33 percent, reflecting a six-point drop from November 3 in this survey. That is a new low for the 81-year-old since he took office. His disapproval now sits at 55 percent, reflecting a three-point increase over the same time frame." Charlotte Hazzard at JTN, Small business owners suggest Bidenomics is Grinch that stole Christmas bonuses. "A poll conducted by RedBalloon shows roughly 42% of U.S. small businesses are forgoing Christmas bonuses." At Althouse finds "Only 23% of voters say Biden's policies have helped them personally, while 53% say they have been hurt by the president's agenda." At Off The Press, #Joementia: Biden Boasts Of Spending ‘Billion Million Trillion’ On Rail Projects In Vegas "Biden Boasts Of Spending 'Billion Million Trillion' On Rail Projects In Vegas." Maybe that's his goal.

Jon Levine at NYPo cites Megyn Kelly says Donald Trump has lost ‘multiple steps’ mentally. I don't doubt, but his still head and shoulders above Biden in mental acuity. Althouse reads the Slantic Who are the "we" who say "That's not who we are"? "I'm reading "Trump Voters Are America Too/If he wins a second term, perhaps we’ll finally dispense with the myth that 'this is not who we are,'" by Mark Leibovich, in The Atlantic. . . . But Leibovich doesn't proceed to try to understand Trump voters as human beings worth knowing. He just goes on to do what a writer for The Atlantic is supposed to do and bemoan those terrible deplorables."

Paul Bedard at WaEx hears 'Dirty voter rolls’ slammed, 131% of eligible DC voters registered. You never know when you may need some extra votes. Natalia Mittelstadt at JTN reports At least 5,600 federal-only ballots cast in Arizona 2020 election without US citizenship proof "Arizona is “one of the only states to have bifurcated elections,” said former Arizona Assistant Attorney General Jennifer Wright." At Fox, Houston mayoral candidate Sheila Jackson Lee tells supporters to vote on wrong date. She never struck me as the brightest congresscritter.

The Peacock whines Trump PAC paid for expert witness testimony in N.Y. civil fraud trial "Eli Bartov, an accounting professor at New York University, said that his $900,000 in expert witness fees were paid by the Trump Organization and Trump’s Save America PAC." Paying expert witnesses is not something new, and both sides do it. "On Friday, Bartov said he has devoted some 650 hours to working on the case, the equivalent to three-plus months of 50-hour workweeks." Pretty good pay.

NewsMax, NY Post: State Dept Paid NewsGuard to Tar Conservative Media. At CTH, sundance is upset that The Modified FISA-702 Reauthorization Bill (HR 6611) Has Passed the House – The Changes Have Expanded Federal Surveillance of Americans."In my opinion, instead of trying to put the FISA genie back into the bottle, Congress needs to work on the accountability piece.  The punishment for abusing the database needs to be defined – perhaps 5 years imprisonment for each search violation."

All 3 have the same head tilt and arrogant smirk. The actual sketch is hardest on Elise Stefanik though, unsurprisingly." Also,
"Not since Bill Clinton was asked about having sex with Monica Lewinsky and replied, 'It depends on what the meaning of the word "is" is,' has there been such parsing." "Writes Maureen Dowd, in "The Ivy League Flunks Out" (NYT), talking about the line "It is a context-dependent decision" spoken by U Penn president Penn’s Elizabeth Magill."  The Babylon Bee snarks 'Not All Calls For Genocide Are Bad,' Say Ivy League Presidents Sporting Cool New Mustaches. Today's wrack line is like yesterday's beach, windswept and mostly bare. But let's see what little bits washed up. Insty wonders WHOSE SIDE IS BLINKEN ON? NEVER MIND, I KNOW: Mark R. Levin @marklevinshow, "MUST READ!  THE DIABOLICAL BLINKEN PLAN EXPOSED! It is crystal clear now that Blinken is exploiting the war against Israel to destroy the existing state of Israel by using pressure, threats, blackmail, leaks, the media, diplomatic backstabbing, the Arab states, the EU, and the UN.  Read the Blinken memo I have included in this post." Not my favorite Fox pundit, he tends to be a little hyperbolic, but generally on the right track.

Althouse catches the WaPoo grousing that Hispanic media outlet Univision gave Trump a fair shake in an interview, "This was Mexican-style news coverage, a repudiation of the concept of separation of business and news." ""What I saw there was batting practice, someone dropping balls for him to hit out of the park. I think it was an embarrassment."

Of course, it must be terrifying to Democrats to see Trump protected within the largest Spanish-language media company.

By the way, if Trump used "Mexican-style" as a pejorative, he'd be reviled.

Rick Moran at PJM claims A Flood of Retirements in Congress Threatens to Upend the 2024 Election

According to Politico, out of the last 15 elections, the party with the fewest retirements has won 10 of them. Even with a partisan lean of 10, a district with a retired incumbent is still considered "in play" by the opposing party.
. . .
Currently, there are 27 Democrats not running for re-election while only 9 Republicans are declining to run. Some of those candidates are running for another office such as governor and senator. But why those 34 retirements are significant is because the cycle hasn't hit its historic peak of announced retirements yet.

Hat Hair's KT bears the ominous news that  Election Offices are Stocking up on Naloxone. Junkies being paid to vote? No: Fentanyl laced letters and ballots:

The letters were sent this month to vote centers or government buildings in six states: Georgia, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, and Kansas. Some were intercepted before they arrived, but others were delivered, prompting evacuations and briefly delaying vote counts in local elections. The FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service are investigating.

Some of the letters featured an antifascist symbol, a progress pride flag and a pentagram. While the symbols have sometimes been associated with leftist politics, they also have been used by conservative figures to label and stereotype the left. The sender’s political leanings were unclear.

Well, I suppose it could be false flag, but that's mostly a leftist tactic.

These learning losses will remain unaddressed when the federal money runs out in 2024. Economists are predicting that this generation, with such a significant educational gap, will experience diminished lifetime earnings and become a significant drag on the economy. But education administrators and elected officials who should be mobilizing the country against this threat are not.

Just In Time for Octoberfest

At WUWT, Climate Bombshell: No Ice-Cold Beer to Cool Us Down as Planet Earth Boils Over

When all else fails on the climate fearmongering front, try warning that beer shortages are likely in the near future. The Financial Times reports that the Chief Executive of the Japanese brewer Asahi, Atsushi Katsuki, says climate change could lead to beer shortages as warmer temperatures hit barley and hop supplies around the world. Fortune goes into full climate tragedy mode, noting: “Beer could face an existential crisis.” Needless to say, missing from all this doomsday drivel is a note that barley is the most adaptable cereal and can grow in many areas from the sub-tropics to the Arctic. Meanwhile, world hop production has never been in better health with global acreage rising in 2021 for the eighth year in succession.

This is not the first time the booze gets it in the climate crisis, with the need to constantly supply political messaging to promote Net Zero. Earlier this year, America celebrated National Margarita Day with CNN warning that climate change could be coming for the seemingly luckless libation. Behind the scare was some made-up nonsense about the weather affecting the ingredients going into tequila, despite the fact that since 1995 tequila production has increased six-fold, and from 2018 it has doubled.
Pushing the beer scare, the Asahi boss spoke of significant falls in the barley harvest and the quality of hops under the “UN’s four degrees scenario”. This assumption from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is used to posit a rise of nearly 3°C in less than 30 years, a ‘pathway’ that is an insult to scientific realism given that global temperatures have barely risen by 0.2°C over the last 25 years. Perhaps Mr. Katsuki was imbibing a little too freely of his excellent product when he told the FT that volatile weather has already interfered with barley yields in recent years. Curiously he added that climate change “had a bigger impact on the price of barley than even Russia’s invasion of Ukraine”.
A great deal of barley ends up with brewers, and with important sectors like beer considered a mature business, with steady rather than spectacular growth, the demand for the grain is fairly constant. Like all harvests it can be affected by local weather conditions but the Statistica graph above shows a steady trend with 2020-21 posting a record total of 160.91 million metric tons. If there are to be dramatic shortages in barley going forward due to climate change, they have yet to show up in the production record. Meanwhile, the situation in Ukraine is of particular concern since it is one of the world’s top producers of the crop.

Barley is a versatile global grain and ranks fourth in both quantity produced and area of cultivation. It is much prized because it is so versatile and can thrive in regions where cereals such as maize and rice do not grow well. According to the agricultural scientist Meixue Zhou, it grows in areas up to the Arctic, along with near desert areas such as North Africa. Other areas where it can thrive include those with a Mediterranean climate, as well as those with oceanic and continental features. In the United States, barley can be grown from the northern tip of Maine down to southern Florida, Texas and much of California. Throughout human history it has played an important part in both food production – humans and animal – and brewing, due to its tolerance of aridity and salinity along with adaptability to weather.
Over on the hop front, two countries – Germany and the United States – account for 77% of world hop acreage, according to Craft Brewing Business, quoting from the BarthHass Report 2021-2022. Alpha acid content is an important factor in beer flavouring, and volumes of this prized ingredient in recent years are said to be at their “highest levels yet”. In the FT, Mr. Katasuki, noted the role hops played in flavouring beer, but claimed that analysis conducted by his company found global warming meant the quality of hops would reduce “significantly” over the next three decades.

In the meantime, the recent problems for the hop growing business are somewhat different to those forecast by Katasuki. “Production cost increases and over-production are a dangerous combination presenting the hop industry with huge challenges. The global hop industry can only counter excess production by adjusting acreage,” observes Peter Hintermeier, of BarthHaas.

Perhaps the Asahi boss gets extra ESG points for pumping out climate fear stories. Back in the real world, with shareholders to keep sweet, he seems to be somewhat more bullish about the future, telling the FT that he hopes to have the brands Asahi Super Dry and Peroni Nastro Azzurro established in the global top 10 by 2030. The company intends to reduce debt by not making further acquisitions until next year, but from 2025, “we’ll be able to become more aggressive in investment again”. Big plans are being made in the U.S., although he suggests that acquiring smaller craft brewers will not achieve the goal of having “wide reach throughout the region”.

If it weren't for lies, they'd have no arguments at all.
