USAToday, Meteor explodes over Boston as sonic boom rings out across Massachusetts

A fiery object disintegrated as it fell off the coast of Boston, causing a series of sonic booms that could be heard in numerous towns and cities across the state.

Eric Fisher, chief meteorologist with CBS News' Boston affiliate WBZ-TV, reported that a meteor fell off the coast of Boston around 2 p.m. EDT May 30. According to a report filed with the American Meteor Society, Fisher's description indicated that the phenomenon was “definitely not lighting.”

“It looks the object disintegrated off the southern coast of Massachusetts,” the AMS report adds. “The sounds were heard in numerous cities/towns across eastern MA.”

Nearly 50 witness reports were filed to AMS with sightings of the meteor across eight states and Canada.

From Althouse, "My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill intended. Could have handled it better! Now I know what a Zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out."
Said Sabrina Carpenter, quoted in "Sabrina Carpenter Apologizes for Mistaking Arabic Celebration Call With Yodeling During Coachella Performance: 'Could Have Handled it Better'" (Variety). ADDED: Notice that she says "I don't like it" when she misreads it as yodeling. Why the hostility to yodeling? But showing disrespect to Arabic culture is another matter. From the NYT article:

Fans appeared divided over Carpenter’s response on social media. One user called it “insensitive and Islamaphobic.” Another wrote: “She’s not obligated to like anything, but after receiving the information that it was part of the person’s culture, the least that is expected is respect.”AND: Does yodeling seem... too country and somehow right wing?

Ada Lluch
As Driscoll at Insty observes in TO SERVE MAN: The Left’s Favorite Food Is Other Leftists. Leaf Arbuthnot at The Telegraph, The far-right has got a new weapon: glamorous young women.

Not so long ago, the stock image of someone from the far-Right was easily summoned: they’d be male, obviously, and very probably bald, with steel-toe boots and questionable tattoos. Times, however, have moved on: this week, it was reported that the Government had banned seven “far-Right agitators” from entering the country to attend a Tommy Robinson rally on Saturday. Three are strikingly telegenic young women.
Eva Vlaardingerbroek

Among the verboten ones is Ada Lluch, an impeccably coiffed 26-year-old Catalan activist who has defended the Franco regime and had told the most recent “Unite the Kingdom” rally last September that western democracies have been “completely invaded”. Valentina Gomez, an influencer from the US, has also been barred, having told last year’s rally that “rapist Muslims” were “taking over” the country (she’s said she’ll still try to come on Saturday, though – via small boat). And Eva Vlaardingerbroek, a Dutch political activist and commentator, has been forbidden too, having lamented “the rape, replacement and murder of our people” in London last autumn.

From the NYPo, Top MAGA influencer revealed to be AI — created by a guy in India who made a mint off lonely men online

A comely MAGA influencer who racked up millions of followers with patriotic content of her posing in a bikini while ice fishing, drinking Coors Light and shooting guns has been unmasked — as an Indian man who put himself through med school on the proceeds of his trickery.

“Sam,” a 22-year-old orthopedic surgeon in training, told Wired that he got the idea to sell AI-generated images of a young woman in a bikini while scrounging for money in school — and trying to save up enough to emigrate to the US after graduation.

He turned to Google’s Gemini AI for advice and decided to create a “hot girl” crafted specifically for the “MAGA/conservative niche,” after the software told him that “the conservative audience (especially older men in the US) often has higher disposable income and is more loyal,” according to Wired.
From Da Mail, Nicki Minaj reveals how Gavin Newsom and Jay-Z turned her into MAGA Republican and Trump's 'number one fan'
Nicki Minaj revealed that it was Gavin Newsom and Beyonce's husband Jay-Z that spurred her recent support for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

The rapper, 43, said a major turning point in her shift away from the Democrats was the way California Governor Newsom ignored her pleas for a meeting, after her home was 'swatted' due to trolls several times.

'He just completely ignored me, with all the money I spent in taxes,' the Anaconda hitmaker - who previously called herself Trump's 'number one fan' - said in a new interview with Time.

After Republican congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna offered to help Minaj in 2025, the star began considering going public with her conservative allegiance.

From Driscoll at Insty, THE NIGHT PORTER: Graham Platner’s Wife Flagged Sexually Explicit Texts to His Senate Campaign. Palm Sunday

 with more Anastasia Rine:

Over the past several weeks, the Independence Avenue Urban Street Ambassadors have been hard at work beautifying the Independence Avenue corridor with new landscaping installations, colorful flowers and decorative palm trees intended to brighten the community for residents, visitors and local businesses alike.

But overnight, in the early morning hours of Friday, May 22, at least 15 palm trees planted along Independence Avenue were stolen. Security cameras captured footage of a person in a white sedan stopping at Independence Avenue and Brooklyn at 12:23 a.m., removing a palm tree from a planter, placing the tree in the back seat of their vehicle, and driving away.

These trees, purchased as part of ongoing beautification efforts by the Independence Avenue Community Improvement District (CID), had recently been installed by the Urban Street Ambassadors, who maintain the corridor year-round through landscaping, litter removal and streetscape improvement projects.

I would have thought Kansas City winters would be too harsh for palms. Maybe they bring them in in winter.

Forget It Jake, It's Baltimore

Akshually, it's a positive story about Balmer at the Freep, Why Did the Murders Stop in Baltimore?

... the levels of crime Baltimore now experiences were seen as inconceivable just a few years ago. And the numbers keep falling. In April, Baltimore had four homicides, the lowest total for any single month since at least 1970. So far this year, there were 38, compared with 51 in the same period last year. At the current rate, Baltimore would end 2026 with fewer than 100 homicides. There were 323 just four years ago.

How did we get from a city in which the question was how high can crime rise, to one where the question is how low can it go? The answer might be linked to the nationwide decline in murder, spurred by a restoration of policing as the excesses of the George Floyd years recede. But that begs the question of what cities across the country are doing right. And it skips over how Baltimore has bucked nationwide murder trends at times, with homicides in the city staying high as violence fell elsewhere in the 1990s and 2000s.

When you look closely and talk to the people on the front lines, some strong patterns emerge, with two competing stories coming into focus. One is the return of a program focused on deterring the small fraction of offenders in Baltimore who commit the large majority of violent crimes. The other is the election of a new tough-on-crime prosecutor, who replaced a scandal-plagued “progressive.”

Which story you prefer has increasingly become a partisan matter, producing unnecessary political feuding. The bigger lesson is that intelligently targeting the most violent offenders, both through deterrence and incapacitation, can yield large, durable reductions in murder. Baltimore’s success shows that its homicide problem was, in reality, just the result of its past leaders’ failure to take violence seriously enough.

As they say, read the whole thing.

Oregon, My Oregon

Vicky Taft has another West Coast, Messed Coast™ — Oregon Is a Step Closer to Outlawing Hunting and Gathering

Oregon is the land of the farthest of far-left nutters, and I can prove it. People circulating petitions for a measure that would outlaw hunting and fishing — in other words, people getting their own food — have passed the signature threshold to get placed on the November ballot. Signature verification will follow.

Initiative 28, called “Peace Act" (not a typo), would, according to the Oregon Hunters Association, “remove legal exemptions protecting hunting, fishing, trapping, and farming from Oregon's animal abuse statutes — turning nearly one million Oregonians into criminals.”

Under this initiative, one could not even use a mousetrap.
Proposed measure would make those practices, and other common practices involving animals, criminal offenses if injury/death occurs. Criminalizes breeding practices for domestic, livestock, and equine animals; exception for 'good veterinary practices' and self-defense. Applies to mammals (including vermin), birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish. Eliminates hunting and fishing licenses, which would remove funding from wildlife management. Directs state money to fund for animal welfare, food assistance, job training for persons who lose livelihood due to initiative’s enactment. Other provisions.

Initiative 28, the “Peace Act,” an acronym standing for People for Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions, would make it illegal to hunt, fish, or get rid of pests such as mice, rats, moles, or gophers in Oregon.

The organizers needed 117,173 signatures and just crossed that threshold this week. The Secretary of State’s offices will verify the signatures to determine how many of those are legitimate. Heh.

I can't describe how sad this makes me. Many of my best memories of my Oregon sojourn are hunting and fishing with my now deceased younger brother Ted. I hope the voters of Oregon resoundingly defeat this stupid proposal, assuming it makes it to the ballot. Unfortunately, I have no confidence in them. anymore.

Forget It Jake, It's Baltimore

From the Balmer Sun, Baltimore budget deficit swells to $64M. Here’s why.

Baltimore officials say an unusually brutal winter and soaring overtime costs have pushed the city’s current budget into a $64.4 million deficit, forcing leaders to tap reserve funds despite stronger-than-expected tax revenue. Finance officials told the Baltimore City Council on Tuesday that cleanup costs tied to four snowstorms — along with overtime spending in the police and fire departments — wiped out what had been projected as a $19.6 million surplus earlier this fiscal year. The largest hit came from emergency winter operations that kept crews working around the clock for weeks. The city budgeted $8 million for snow cleanup and instead spent $80 million this year.

“Even in the best planned environment, you’re going to hit a storm that’s going to go beyond what you’re budgeted for,” Deputy Finance Director Bob Cenamme told council members. “That’s why we have reserves.”

Baltimore wasn’t the only city struggling with this year’s winter storms. Philadelphia, for example, budgeted $4.1 million for snow cleanup and ended up spending $59 million. Washington D.C., meanwhile, budgeted $7.3 million and spent more than $67 million.

To close the gap, Baltimore plans to draw from its rainy-day fund and use FEMA reimbursement money. The city’s reserve fund now sits near $200 million.  City officials confirmed to The Baltimore Sun they haven’t received the FEMA funds yet. As of Tuesday, Baltimore was still in the process of applying for the money.

Tax revenue, parking revenue and investments saved the city from digging an even deeper hole in its budget, city officials said. Income tax revenue alone gave the city $17.3 million more in revenue surplus than originally projected after generating $74 million more than predicted in Q2. Vacancies across several agencies, including the comptroller’s office, state’s attorney’s office and city IT department, also reduced spending.

Still, the city’s overall financial outlook deteriorated sharply from earlier projections. The Q2 projections for the total budget were worse by $84 million, as the city expected to have a $19.6 million surplus instead of a $64.4 million overall deficit.

Here's a clue. If you spend more money than you take in, you'll run a deficit.
