The second major story is that a lone gunman approached a security post near the White House, pulled a gun and fired several shots, upon which time he was shot by the Secret Service and later died. A bystander was also hit and critically wounded. The shooter was a "known" kook, with repeated previous run ins with the Secret Service. I hesitate to call it an assassination attempt; there was simply no way the shooter was going to get anywhere near the President, but I don't doubt that in his mind that's what was going to happen.
