Across the small South American country, palm trees are falling prey to a fierce enemy measuring just 5 centimetres (2 inches) in length: The red palm weevil. First the elegant fronds droop. Then the tell-tale holes appear in the trunk. Soon enough, the tree is tilting toward collapse.

The weevil has devoured thousands of Uruguay’s palm trees since its unexplained arrival from Southeast Asia in 2022. But authorities are only now waking up to the threat as the landscape of municipalities transforms and fears grow that the country’s beloved palms could be wiped out.

 

“We are late in addressing this,” Estela Delgado, the national director of biodiversity at Uruguay’s Ministry of Environment, acknowledged last month. “But we are doing so with great commitment and seriousness.”

The insect and its devastating impact can be found in 60 countries around the world but nowhere else in South America. Authorities first detected it in the town of Canelones, bordering Montevideo, where the insect killed more than 2,000 palm trees in less than a month.

The nature of the program meant that she lost 8lbs over the course of the show. She made it to the final of the show, but was eliminated. Although she didn’t win, Yanita had gained national exposure; becoming a star in her home country.

After she was eliminated from the program, Yanita realized that she enjoyed her thinner frame, and found the motivation to stay lean.

This is what motivated her to begin lifting weights in the gym. She started following a well-planned diet and training routine, determined to sculpt her dream figure.

Using her new-found fame from appearing on the TV Show, Survivor Bulgaria, Yanita created various social media profiles; she wanted to share her fitness journey with her fans, and inspire others to chase their dreams.

By 2017, at the age of 30, Yanita had developed an incredible physique. She was approached to feature in various magazines and websites as a fitness model, and became known around the world for her aesthetic body.

Southern Maryland News, Bear sighted in St. Mary's County

Late last week reports began popping up on social media of black bear sightings in St. Mary’s County. The county’s emergency services department issued a warning to residents with some helpful tips now that there seems to be at least one black bear that wandered into the county.

Those tips include never feed a bear, secure garbage outside of homes, don’t leave pet food outside, remove bird feeders while bears are active, and clean and store grills. “While black bears are generally not aggressive, they can pose a threat if they feel cornered, startled or have easy access to food around human habitats,” according to the department.

So far, sightings have been reported in Piney Point, Mechanicsville and Dameron and Historic St. Mary’s City — in other words, throughout St. Mary’s County.

Officials have not given any word on how the black bear may have arrived in St. Mary’s, although some have speculated it swam across the Potomac River from Virginia, where the bears are prevalent, especially in the mountains.

For now, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources is monitoring the situation. “To my knowledge, I don’t believe they’ve caught the bear or seen the bear too recently, but it is exciting,” Commissioner Eric Colvin (R) said at Tuesday’s county commissioners’ meeting. “Recommendation is if you see the bear, just let it be, let it go on its way.”

If it swam the Potomac to get to St. Mary's County, it can swim the Patuxent to get to Calvert. It's a good thing Black Bears hardly ever kill anybody. I wonder if it's hanging out with the St. Mary's Alligator.
