Fox, Filtered water at specific ages could add months to your lifespan decades later, new study finds. Color me skeptical. There are cases of where drinking bad water can kill you, but if you drink water from a regulated water provider, I doubt that added filtration has any benefit.
One day you wash up on the beach, wet and naked. Another day you wash back out. In between, the scenery changes constantly.

Tattoo Tuesday
Medical XPress, An 'intelligent tattoo' to detect skin cancer before it appears
Called SMEAR-ULM, it's a high-tech system that can detect skin cancers at their earliest stages by measuring tiny temperature variations at the surface of the skin. Led by INRS professor Jinyang Liang, the research team has published their findings in Nature Sensors. So, do get this over your whole body? My grandfather died on melanoma that started on his ear.
...
At the core of the system is a patch of painless microneedles that deposits specialized nanoparticles just beneath the skin. These nanoparticles form a temporary "intelligent tattoo" that behaves like an array of microscopic thermometers.
When illuminated with near-infrared light, the nanoparticles emit visible light. Crucially, the lifetime of this light emission—how long it lasts—depends directly on local temperature. Because cancer cells consume more oxygen and nutrients than healthy cells, they produce additional heat, which can be detected through this optical signal.
...
With this approach, the researchers successfully detected micro-melanomas as early as four days old—a stage at which they are typically far too small to be identified by conventional imaging techniques.

Nursing home fighting ‘$2M cup of coffee’ penalty finally headed for its
day in court
A nursing home that says it’s the victim of a surveyor’s misinterpretation of a non-existent temperature standard for coffee service has formally appealed its $1.8 million penalty in federal court.
In its filing against the Department of Health and Human Services Thursday an attorney for Potomac Falls Health & Rehab Center highlighted earlier testimony by the lead surveyor who conceded there is “no regulation for hot coffee.”
“There are [no stated temperature regulations] and CMS utterly failed to provide any evidence otherwise,” attorney Alan Horowitz wrote in a 54-page brief that noted temperature limits for other foods are included in the State Operations Manual that guides surveyors.
The filing occurred in the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, a little more than 10 years after the standalone incident that required no special treatment nor a follow-up inspection.
HHS issued a $6,550 per day civil monetary penalty for an Immediate Jeopardy deficiency over 272 days, a span when no similar incidents occurred despite tens of thousands of hot drinks being consumed.

Palm Sunday
With Aurela Hoxha:
The EPCOT palm trees that flanked Spaceship Earth have been removed after being irrevocably damaged during cold snaps this winter. The trees were previously in flowerbeds right behind the flag poles at the entrance to the park. As of May 22, they are all gone. Florida experienced several bouts of freezing temperatures this winter. Disney was able to protect some plants but trees saw significant damage. We saw Disney trying to save the banyan tree at Animal Kingdom.

Pooptomac River Reopens for Recreation
MyMC Media: Potomac river reopens for recreation, but lingering questions remain
Residents filled the Glen Echo Town Hall on Monday evening seeking answers about the safety of the Potomac River months after the Jan. 2026 Potomac Interceptor sewage spill contaminated sections of the river near Minnie’s Island and the C&O Canal. To be fair, it never smelled that good.
“Is it safe to walk the trails with my dogs and my children?,” one resident asked during the meeting. “Why does it still smell bad?”
The questions reflected the lingering concerns shared by many community members despite assurances from officials that the Potomac River has largely rebounded and recreational activities can resume with caution.
Representatives from DC Water, the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Maryland Department of Health told residents that cleanup and restoration efforts remain ongoing while water quality testing shows significant improvement.
Montgomery County Health Officer Dr. Kisha Davis announced that the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services has lifted its health advisory for the Potomac River after continuous monitoring showed bacterial concentrations had returned to acceptable Environmental Protection Agency safety levels. “Water conditions have improved enough for recreational activities on the river to resume,” Davis said.
Davis said activities such as kayaking, rowing and trail use may continue, but Davis and other health officials urged residents to avoid shoreline areas and river sediment between Lock 11 and the shoreline surrounding Minnie’s Island.
“Please keep children and pets away from these specific environments,” Davis warned.
While officials emphasized that the river is safe for most recreational purposes, they cautioned residents to remain vigilant, particularly after heavy rainfall. Davis said bacteria levels in natural waterways often surge for 48 to 72 hours after storms.
Residents were advised to avoid ingesting river water, protect open wounds and thoroughly wash skin, clothing and pets after contact with affected sediment areas.
More Crabby News
From National Fisherman, Bay-wide blue crab survey shows 46 percent increase. That's good news, right? Wait a minute:
So, more adult males and more juveniles. That's a good sign for this years fishery, and maybe next years, if the Blue Catfish don't eat all the juveniles. But low female crab numbers doesn't bode too well for the year after that.
The 2026 Bay-wide Blue Crab Winter Dredge Survey show a 46 percent increase in the abundance of blue crabs in Chesapeake Bay, for a total population of 349 million crabs.
“This increase comes despite another cold winter, which increased the overwintering mortality of crabs throughout the bay and caused cold-stun events in several finfish species throughout Virginia. Overall, the results suggest improved conditions for the 2026 crab fishery,” stated a news release from Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC).
The annual Winter Dredge Survey found the total estimated population of blue crabs in Chesapeake Bay increased from 238 million crabs in the winter of 2024-2025 to 349 million crabs in the winter of 2025-2026. This was driven mainly by an increase of 120 percent in juvenile blue crabs, up to 228 million juveniles. Adult male crab abundance also increased, from 26 million to 37 million crabs. The adult female population, however, declined to 81 million. Although, the 349 million is encouraging, historically 1993 survey numbers of 852 million is a bar that has not been reached again since the dredge survey started.
So, more adult males and more juveniles. That's a good sign for this years fishery, and maybe next years, if the Blue Catfish don't eat all the juveniles. But low female crab numbers doesn't bode too well for the year after that.
The increase in juvenile crabs is showing up in Virginia crab pots. Joey William of Remlik, Va. fishes hard crab and peeler pots in the Rappahannock and Piankatank rivers. “I am seeing an abundance of juvenile crabs, the size of a thumbnail, in every pot that I pull,” says Williams. “If these crabs survive, we should have a good year next year.
"This spring we are not seeing the soft-shell and adult crabs that we usually see this time of the year,” says Williams. “I think it is most likely due to the cold winter and extended low water temperatures into May. Usually in May the (peeler) crab runs start and we are shedding 150 to 200 dozen (soft-shell crabs) a night. The best we have done this May so far is 40 dozen a night.”
That's still a lot of peelers, most of which are female.

The Monday Morning Stimulus
Make your coffee at home, they said. You’ll retire sooner without a daily Starbucks run cutting into your 401(k) contributions. But small indulgences aren’t the thing standing between many Americans and a comfortable retirement. That would be structural problems like the high cost of housing, wages that haven’t kept pace with inflation, and a fraying social safety net.
Also, have you seen how much coffee beans cost? Coffee prices are up 18.5% year over year, according to the latest government data. Inflation has come for our caffeine fix, whether we brew at home or take it to go.
My household has started buying whatever coffee brand is on sale. Mind you, this is just to shave a few dollars off our grocery bill, not because it’s going to help us retire any sooner. For a fighting chance at that, you need the right kind of investments. Some pros like sectors of the stock market, such as real estate, that can raise their prices with inflation. Bonds and cash alone aren’t going to cut it.
Coffee prices are the least of our problems. We buy whatever is on sale at the Dollar General up the road in St. Leonard. If the cost of coffee is messing up your retirement, you didn't plan right.

Palm Sunday
With Taylor Carpenter
Blue and gold macaws are not native to Caracas. But over the past two decades their numbers in Venezuela's capital have skyrocketed, with hundreds of these birds now flying freely across the city, and dazzling locals with their colorful feathers and peculiar calls.
The birds have become a symbol of Caracas and formed a special bond with some people, who leave food for them in their balconies or gardens. But this unique relationship between humans and exotic birds is now under threat as city authorities cut down the palm trees that the macaws depend on to raise their offspring.
Maria Lourdes Gonzalez, a biologist who studies the macaws says that in the following years, the city's population of blue and gold macaws could plummet. "If they don't find a place where they can breed, there will be no new generation of macaws" she said at her office in Caracas' Simon Bolivar University.
Gonzalez explained that the macaws only nest in a palm tree known as the chaguaramo, or the royal palm. And they only use chaguaramos with no leaves whose trunks are decaying and have been partially hollowed out by insects.
Officials are taking these old palm trees down in several parks and public spaces as they try to beautify the city ,and prevent rotting tree trunks from falling on people. It's a policy that makes sense from the perspective of a city planner, Gonzalez explained, but one that threatens the macaws.
"These are not birds that make nests out of branches or twigs," Gonzalez said. "They occupy holes inside old tree trunks, and in Caracas, they only use the chaguaramo trees."

Tattoo Thursday
Kentucky authorities arrested a woman accused of giving her 22-month-old child a tattoo. The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Brook McDaniel, was taken into custody last Monday by Kentucky State Police (KSP), according to the Adair County Regional Jail.
During a home visit, investigators said they discovered the family living in "deplorable" conditions and found the toddler with a black dot tattoo on his arm, along with visible redness surrounding the area, local outlet LEX 18 reported, citing a uniform citation.
Witnesses told investigators that McDaniel allegedly tattooed the child while she was tattooing herself, the outlet added.
Jeez, at least she should have given him a Teddy Bear or something to remind him of her for the rest of his life. Or maybe a Totenkopf, the current rage in Democrat symbolism!
