It is illegal to operate a commercial solarium across most of the country, but finding one online and booking a session takes only minutes.
Jess* has been using solariums through the underground market for about eight years.
"I spend a lot of time on my appearance, whether that's at the gym, botox, all of those sorts of things to enhance my appearance, and to me I guess having tanned skin just became part of that package," the Melbourne woman said.

Rule 5 Saturday - Nicky Whelan
This week's Rule 5 exemplar is
Nicky Whelan (born 10 May 1981) is an Australian actress and model. She is best known for her roles as Laurie Mitchell in Chosen (2013), and Pepper Steiger in Australian soap opera Neighbours (2006–2007).
Before Neighbours, Whelan hosted a number of shows, including Coxy's Big Break (Seven Network), Beyond the Boundary (Network Ten), and Melbourne Woman (Seven Network), and played the fictional celebrity "Chrissie Grant" on Russell Coight's Celebrity Challenge, a spin-off of All Aussie Adventures. Whelan is also known as the face of the rural Victorian city, Shepparton, and she hosted the night racing at Moonee Valley for eight years. Whelan has also posed for a number of Australian magazines, including FHM (in October 2007), Ralph (in November 2005) and Inside Sport.
After leaving Neighbours, Whelan moved to Los Angeles. She made guest appearances in episodes of Entourage and Melrose Place, before securing a role in the ninth season of Scrubs as Maya, an Australian medical-school student. Flotsam and Jetsam - Brown Shooter Found Dead - Judge Dugan Found Guilty
It was a quite a day for law enforcement in the search for the Brown killer. First, it was announced he had been identified and linked to the murder of an MIT physics professor "Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a 47-year-old theoretical physicist and fusion scientist from Portugal" that occurred after the Brown shootings, and an arrest warrant issued, then his car was located at a self storage facility in New Hampshire, and finally, he was found dead in the self storage facility of an apparently self-inflicted gun shot. The shooter was identified as Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a Portuguese green card hold and a former PhD student at Brown, most recently living in Florida, who shared a past with the MIT professor. A homeless former Brown student, living on campus who had an encounter with the shooter after the shootings gave authorities enough information to lead to his arrest warrant.
