Flotsam and Jetsam - Happy 250th Birthday America!

Rep. Eric Davanzo
Althouse cites Donald Trump and hosts his speech at Mt. Rushmore, "These are very, very special times. And this is a very special place. You live in a very special place. Congratulations everybody." "Those were the very very very special words of our President, Donald J. Trump, speaking at Mount Rushmore, on the eve of the 250th anniversary of the 4th of July." Oh no! He was mean to the communists! Also from sundance at CTH, Freedom 250 from Mount Rushmore – Livestream Links. Don Surber is Defining MAGA, "Been around 250 years. We will be around another 250." ZitoSalena @ZitoSalena, "Line to get into the Pennsylvania booth at the Great American State Fair out the door! Pavilion is filled with displays from businesses all across the state. PLACE matters--that's what drove people & businesses to step up with pride; no way were they going to let this go empty." Streiff at RedState thinks the Rogue USAF Major's Speech Garners Progressive Praise, but I Don't Think They've Thought This Through.

Fox News@FoxNews "JUST IN: NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani used America’s 250th anniversary to sharply criticize the country, accusing the U.S. of allowing children to go hungry while billionaires and “oligarchs” gain more power. He said America’s wealth was built by working people with “calloused, dirt-streaked hands" while accusing the country of allowing the wealth built by workers to be concentrated in “the soft hands of a precious few.” Mary Chastain at LI sees Mamdani Trashes America, Trump in Speech Marking Country’s 250th Birthday. Quote Gerald Posner @geraldposner, "One year ago today, reports revealed that @NYCMayor checked both “Asian” and “Black or African American” on his 2009 Columbia application (he wrote in “Ugandan” and later said he doesn’t consider himself Black or African American — just an American born in Africa — because the forms had no box for “Indian-Ugandan”). ... When Mamdani gets to the “enslaved Africans” section, that might be the perfect moment to mention how he tried to check the African American box himself back when it could have helped tip the university admissions scale." Bonchie @bonchieredstate, "Eloquent? He trashed the country and then insisted it belongs to non-Americans while making a mockery of George Washington." Quote David Axelrod @davidaxelrod, "These eloquent words speak to me as the grateful son of a refugee who arrived here with his family, carrying little more than their hopes and dreams of freedom and a better life." Northern Barbarian @xnoesbueno, "In fairness, he doesn't know how free markets, capitalism, socialism, communism and New York City work, so I'd have to say the desk is either the least of everyone's concerns. Or a tell." Quote Kate Hyde @KateHydeNY, "Are we as offended by Mamdani using George Washington's desk to make a speech once we realize he doesn't even know how a desk works?"

From NYPo news that the FBI infiltrated Gavin Newsom’s inner circle by convincing governor’s ally to wear a wire. Sundance, Lisa Monaco and Merrick Garland Organized Wire Recording Surveillance of Gavin Newsom in June of 2024. "Newsom was under political surveillance prior to Biden’s withdrawal. This puts context on the plan to replace Biden with then VP Kamala Harris. What does then Deputy AG Lisa Monaco and then VP Kamala Harris have in common? They were both key figures within the Barack Obama operation." Chef Andrew Gruel @ChefGruel, "This is nuts!! Voters chose @realSonjaShaw for State Superintendent in the primary, but instead of respecting the fact she may win, Newsom is fast-tracking legislation to shift key powers from the independently elected Superintendent of Public Instruction to a governor-appointed official. Flotsam and Jetsam - Still More Reflections from the Reflection Pool

Magills@magills
Jen O'Connell at RedState sees The Insane Obsession With Sabotaging the D.C. Reflecting Pool Results in an Arrest. John Sexton at Hat Hair explores the question Did Vandals Target the Reflecting Pool? For sure, yes, some one carved 86 47 in the liner. As to the algae bloom, the pool was re-filled with city water, which would not have enough nutrients (chiefly nitrogen and phosphorus) to support a quick bloom like that. I strongly suspect someone dumped a bag of lawn fertilizer or similar nutrients into it. Northern Barbarian @xnoesbueno, "On the other hand, the algae obsession confirms they really have no legitimate gripe. They have been reduced to protesting a biological phenomenon. (Though given the trans thing, it is not entirely uncharted territory.)" Quote MAZE @mazemoore, "On one side of the Reflecting Pool there’s the MSM claiming that the algae is still there, on another side leftists are protesting to bring the algae back, and on another side leftists are trying to vandalize the pool. TDS needs to be officially classified as a mental disorder." At Althouse, The Mystery of the Paint Peel and "I was just a curious, concerned citizen. I guess I was there at the wrong place, wrong time." "Said David Carter Hearn, 67, "a cyclist and three-time Olympian as a canoeist who says he stopped at the [Reflecting Pool] on Friday just to have a look, then reached down to touch a strip of peeling blue paint mixed with the algae. The U.S. Park Police arrested Mr. Hearn shortly after, accusing him of destroying government property, a crime that can carry up to a 10-year prison sentence." I'm reading "Trump, Claiming Vandalism, Says Reflecting Pool Will Likely Need to Be Drained/The pool has taken on clouds of algae after a hasty renovation. A three-time Olympian was charged with destroying government property after he says he touched one of the strands of blue paint peeling off the pool’s bottom" (NYT). Didn't do nuffin'! Althouse also comments "I don't know if the claims of vandalism are true, but the temptation to vandalize was obvious and strong even before Trump started talking about vandals. Now, it's unavoidable, and I think we will never have our pool back where it belongs in the American psyche. It's a mess, a bone of contention, a symbol of everything and anything people don't like about Trump. The pool never worked as it was intended, and now its essential badness is glaring at us, and it will never calm back down into the serene murky swamp it once was." It's true making the pool work is harder than it sounds, but her solution seems to be to cede the pool to the leftist destroyers. Fugitive Caesar @ThomBrady5, "Leftists are getting angry because around 10-15 million Leftists are paid to do cushy high-paid fake jobs, based on credentials and a claim to unique technical authority. If Trump and Chuds can fix problems considered impossible, it threatens the entire managerial caste." Quote Mark Hemingway @Heminator, "So I'm supposed to believe people are genuinely OUTRAGED by a $14m no bid contract to fix the reflecting pool? If this level of fiscal irresponsibility is what you object to, man, what happens under Democrat governance is truly going to blow your mind." I think project should be measured in "Quality Learing Center" units, or QLCs.

Begoña Gómez - not too shabby
but Melania is still hotter
Some news from abroad via sundance at CTH, Trump -v- Meloni "The core of the issue centers on Italy’s refusal to allow the U.S. military to conduct flight operations for the conflict against Iran from U.S. airbases in Italy. President Trump, Vice-President Vance, Secretary of State Rubio and Secretary Hegseth have all remarked on their disappointment with Italy and Spain that has led to a full review of U.S. NATO operations in Europe. The issue became personal at the G7 when President Trump ignored Meloni’s repeated attempts to repair the friction. President Trump was no longer tolerating the two-faced approach. Actions speak louder than words." And Wife of Socialist Spanish Prime Minister Now Facing Corruption Charges, Influence Peddling, Embezzlement – Passport Surrendered. Jeff Charles at TownHall sees Trump Just Slapped Down This Iranian Scheme for Strait of Hormuz, trying to charge tolls in the form of "insurance." Does Joe Chalfant really wonder Why Are the Iranians Lying About Closing the Strait of Hormuz? "The Islamic Republic of Iran has announced that they have closed the Strait of Hormuz. The reality on the ground shows that ships continue to travel through the waterway unimpeded, with U.S. naval assets in the region confirming that the Strait is completely open." But this way, WaPoo and NYT can cite the Iranians.

Mark Hemingway @Heminator, "Do you genuinely believe “co-existing and co-operating within a shared commons” is the “natural order”? Because that is totally ahistorical and insane. Slavery and constant warfare are the natural order without rule of law and markets." Jason Robertson @JRobFromMN, "This is a problem many on the Right don't want to accept The Left is no longer "just like us they just want to have more welfare" The left is abandoning Capitalism, Christianity and all of the values we used to hold as a Country,(and the right still does) This isn't a "difference of opinion on tax policy", the left wants a full scale reimagining of our country into a Socialist/Communist Utopia they think could exist if we "just did it right this time""

Flotsam and Jetsam - Reflections on the Reflecting Pool

Dr. Clayton Forrester @DrClaytonForre1, "Trump hired a bunch of chuds to restore the Reflecting Pool, which they did on time and on budget. Liberals are absolutely furious because they don't want voters to see that you can just fix things." Quote The White House @WhiteHouse, "“Our Great ‘Warriors’ who fixed and rebuilt the Reflecting Pool!” - President Donald J. Trump." richard wolf @RawdogDMonkey, "Wait, you can fix things without a $452m study to determine if we should perform a $36m environmental impact study before awarding a $875m contract to do what some pool guys did for $3m?" At Althouse, Live feed of the filling of the Reflecting Pool, and a poll, Can we all just say it looks beautiful? Pick the answer closest to what you think. 1) Never. It looks like Trump. That's all I see and that's always ugly. 2) Let's be empathetic to those who are so deeply troubled by Trump that they can't see what is true. 3) It's objectively beautiful, and everyone ought to acknowledge what is true.

Andrew Breitbart and Lyndsey Fifield
Stacy McCain sings the praises of The Unexpected Heroine Lyndsey Fifield. "When the story broke Thursday, I was stunned. The ex-girlfriend of Graham Platner featured in the lengthy New York Times story was someone I’ve known since 2010. I spent most of the afternoon calling and texting friends who also knew her, and they were similarly surprised." Atop Da Hill Jonathan Turley observes that 8 years after Kavanaugh, Democrats have stopped believing all women. They never really did; it was always selective. Althouse finds Dirtbagism. "I'm reading "Graham Platner and the Rise of the ‘Dirtbag’ Democrat/And what the Maine candidate reveals about politics today" in the NYT." At Hat Hair, Mark Judge observes The Left Covers for Graham Platner and Dave Strom sees The Irony of Graham Platner's Campaign. Chuck Ross @ChuckRossDC, "The guy who divorced his wife when she was 9 months pregnant has some thoughts on Graham Platner’s sexts," Quote Sahil Kapur @sahilkapur, "Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., on Platner: “We know that Graham has lived not your typical political experience. He's been very clear and open with his wife, and they worked through whatever they worked through. At the end of the day, this man has had 60 more town halls than Susan." Liz Mair @LizMair, "My grandfather never physically injured my grandmother in the course of an altercation. He served in WWII. My father-in-law is also not a wife-beater; he ran logistics for the British Army during the Falklands War, in theater." Matt Whitlock @MattWhitlock, "This is a really valuable read to understand how Graham Platner rose - it wasn't some organic populist surge. It was a well-funded op - including glowing NYT and GQ profiles BEFORE he even announced, promoting a very specific curated message intended to get libs online buzzing." Quote Jim Geraghty @jimgeraghty, "So… it was, and is, “an op.” The right Democratic political consulting and media firm created an artificial buzz and persuaded all of these publications that Grähäm Plätner was The Next Big Thing™. It's because you've become a stooge for AIPAC and the Republican party." Joe Chalfant at TownHall wonders Why Are Democrats Siccing Staffers on People Asking Questions?

Stephen L. Miller @redsteeze, "It's not that hard. The left lets institutions and communities break down to a point of total degradation to prove why more government and non profits are the answer. The goal is to purposely not solve problems and make life and safety worse. See the entire defund the police movement and homelessness nonprofits in California. Flotsam and Jetsam - Trump Sets Sights on Iran's Power, Bridges and Oil

Until now, the military action in Iran has focused on the Iranian leadership, with attacks carried out mostly by Israel, and their military capabilities, largely with US Forces, leaving the civilian infrastructure of power, transport and revenue generation (oil) largely alone, hoping that if and when a suitable government of Iran emerges it won't be left with a country without the ability to take care of itself. Now, Trump is threatening to start dismantling the underpinnings of the regime further, by targeting power plants, bridges and oil production if the IRGC does not open the Straits of Hormuz to international traffic. Jim Hanson @JimHansonDC, "It doesn't get more straightforward than this from President Trump. The gloves come off Tuesday against the Ayatollahs." Althouse has the vapours over his use of the curse word, "Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah." "That's the way our President speaks...Hard to believe, but there it is." Sundance at CTH, President Trump Fills in Remarkable Background Details – Deal Tomorrow or U.S. Begins Systematic Destruction of Iranian Infrastructure. OutspokenSamantha @Outspoken_Sam, "Yes, I did in fact vote for a President who would call our enemies "crazy bastards" and threaten to send them to hell if they didn't take us seriously. What's actually embarrassing is voting for someone to send them money."

Of course, most of yesterday's digits were spilled on the rescue of the weapons system operator of the F15 that was shot down over Iran. It appears the airman, injured in the incident, evaded capture, and climbed a 7,000 ft mountain to wedge himself into a hidey-hole to await rescue. Reports are the US built a runway to land rescue planes in the desert, rescued the WSO, and had to ditch two C-130s in place due to mechanical issues, blowing them up to prevent their secrets from being revealed. It is also reported that Irani resistance slowed the IRGC search, and the CIA promoted a hoax to mislead the IRGC as to where the man was hiding. I'm not so sure of the first, and I expect the CIA to lie at every available opportunity, especially to make themselves look important. Stacy McCain calls it an Easter Miracle: U.S. Rescues Second Crewman From Downed F-15E in Iran. Streiff at RedState explains How the Amazing Rescue of Two American Airmen Unfolded. Althouse has the NYT take, "The rescue followed a life-or-death race between U.S. and Iranian forces that stretched over two days to reach the injured airman, a weapon systems officer, officials said." ""The operation took commandos deep inside Iran and involved hundreds of special operations troops. There were no U.S. casualties among the rescue team, Mr. Trump said. The rescued officer had 'sustained injuries, but he will be just fine,' Mr. Trump added..." From "Iran War Live Updates: U.S. Rescues Officer From Downed Fighter Jet in Iran, Trump Says" (NYT)." From Sundance, President Trump Announces, F-15 Crew Member Rescued in Daring Raid and Former CENTCOM Commander Frank McKenzie Discusses U.S. Rescue Operation in Iran. RedState's Nick Arama thinks the Former CENTCOM Commander Delivers the Perfect Comment on the Rescue of Officer From Iran. wretchardthecat @wretchardthecat, "The most interesting aspect of the weapons officer rescue in Iran was CENTCOM's ability to use so many disparate personnel and capabilities in such a rapid and integrated way. They were making it up as they went along with complex tools and time critical sequences...A lot of the news focus is naturally on the machines, because that is what you can see. But someone told me years ago that air forces are not made out of planes. They are made up of people, and that is what we glimpsed here." Eric Daugherty @EricLDaugh, "BREAKING: Former CENTCOM commander Ret. Gen. Frank McKenzie just said it PERFECTLY “It takes a year to build an aircraft — and it takes 200 YEARS to build a military tradition where you don't leave anybody behind!”" Insty at his substack, The Iran Operation, "Was the secret weapon AI staff work?" In the last 24 hours: 1) American military set up a base within enemy territory to rescue a downed flier, defying the ill-wishes of countless lefty douchebags plus fulfilling the shahadat jones of untold IRCG and Basij. 2) Americans reclaimed their indigenous rights to the Moon, declared it the 51st state, named it Trump, that our crazy orange president may moon his adversaries and nattering naysayers unto eternity. This will be most fun during those periods when the celestial orb formerly known as the Moon appears in an orange-ish hue. The phenomenon formerly known as a blood moon will henceforth be called a more Trumpy Trump. 3) Canadians, feeling the sting of American mockery, got pissed off. 4) King Charles III affirmed his allegiance to Islam, in an act of the kind of obtuse regal boneheadedness that traditionally has preceded the downfall of kings. 5) France douchebaggedly asserted its Frenchness on the international stage, in an act of the kind of obtuse French boneheadedness that is likely to bite France in the ass. 6) America, Fuck Yeah (Also, American astronauts, with a Canadian along for the ride, unclogged a space toilet enroute to Trump, the celestial object formerly known as the Moon)." And, Northern Barbarian @xnoesbueno, "The phrase that comes to mind is, "America, Fuck Yeah." Quote RiverOaksGuy @Bowtiedplayer, "Imagine being Iran's leadership right now You once were the feared boogie man of the Middle East. Instead, you get the complete shit kicked out of you for 5 weeks straight, your entire navy sunk, your supreme leader killed, and you FINALLY shoot down 1 plane." At Calling All Rush-Babes, *About that rescue of a downed pilot inside Iran. America Wins! A Driscolly post at Insty, “IT’S A TESTAMENT TO THE U.S. MILITARY THAT NO AMOUNT OF EQUIPMENT IS MORE VALUABLE THAN A SINGLE AIRMAN’S LIFE:” Peter Meijer @PeterMeijer, "Between January’s Maduro extradition and today’s F-15 WSO rescue, President Trump is demonstrating an exceptionally high risk tolerance for military operations in his second term. Not a great time to be an adversary of the US!" Quote RedDevil @Snakeeater36 "SOF elements made a flying ORP and went and got dude in the dead of night….possibly dismounted, then BIP’ed the plane, and left. I think we have entered a time where our military is allowed to take bolder risks than we have seen in a long time."

While progressives aren't yet so obtuse as to actually express their anger at the military's (and by extension, Trump's) victory in this rescue, they have begun to counterattack by highlighting the cost of the incident, four airplanes lost (the F15, an A10 Warthog, and two C-130s). Bad Hombre @Badhombre, "Trump orders two transport planes blown up so Iranians don’t steal and reverse-engineer our technology after a wildly successful rescue mission of two American pilots deep inside Iranian territory. Biden leaves behind $85 billion in military equipment to the Taliban and over 100 military K9s abandoned at Kabul airport during a disastrous withdrawal that killed 13 service members. Take a guess which one Democrats are calling a success. InfantryDort @infantrydort, "America, please don’t listen to the new narrative that we wasted so much equipment to save one life. There’s a reason recruiting is through the roof. And it’s because we don’t leave your sons and daughters behind enemy lines because it’s financially convenient." Lee (Greater) @shortmagsmle, "I’m noticing a lot of foreigners who seem to not understand why we’d risk hundreds of lives, spend millions of dollars, and sacrifice several aircraft to rescue one guy. And the reason they don’t understand is also the reason people can’t be made American by a piece of paper." Quote Daniel Foubert @Arrogance_0024 "Lose all this to rescue 1 pilot and call it your greatest military success of all time." Varad Mehta @varadmehta, "Can't wait to hear tomorrow about how the US being able to conduct a massive search and rescue op inside Iran, find the missing airman while killing a bunch of Irani goons, and then escape more or less unscathed, is a defeat for America and makes the mullahs stronger than ever." Rabbi Linda Goldstein @realrabbilinda, "Imaging losing 1 plane for every 13,000 strike missions and thinking that America is winning the war in Iran. At this rate, Iran can absorb 52,000,000 strikes to down the remaining 4,000 US strike aircraft. America will lose." From Twitchy, T. The laws, the mindset, and the behaviour, is totally different in this regard..." Eric S. Raymond @esrtweet, "Hello, Europeans. The first thing you need to understand about the rant I'm about to utter is that I'm not MAGA, not a Trumpite, but a libertarian who has in the past nevertheless been strongly supportive of US military presence overseas. Because I want the wars that defend this country to be fought in somebody else's country, as far away from me as possible with a nice big ocean in the way. Also relevant: I have a history of having lived in Europe and traveled there extensively. I was at one time bilingual in English and Spanish, and have been passably fluent in Italian and French as well. I could probably still find my way around London and Rome and central Paris reasonably well. So if you're tempted to tell yourselves that I'm some kind of parochial American hick, abandon that hope. All that was set-up. So that, when I tell you that almost the entirety of the US electorate, not just Trump supporters, is increasingly fed up with your shit, take me seriously. We've been cleaning up your messes and keeping the sea lanes open since 1917. And that was for you, not us - we, being very close to resource self-sufficient, don't need that investment so much. We've spent enormous amounts of blood and treasure on keeping you safe. We risked nuclear hellfire on our own cities for nearly 50 years to keep Soviet tanks from rolling through the Fulda Gap..." John Ʌ Konrad V @johnkonrad, "NATO is in far bigger danger than anyone realizes. And the reason has nothing to do with defense budgets. The real danger is psychological. It’s cultural. Europeans didn’t just free-ride on American security for 80 years. They built an entire identity around the idea that they evolved past the Americans protecting them. That identity is now the single biggest obstacle to Western survival. And the darkest irony is: we helped build it..." At TownHall, Alan Joseph Bauer says Allahu Akbar, Europe!
