Flotsam and Jetsam - Iran to Trump: Let's Make a Deal

But first, from Capt. Ed at Hat Hair, US Pounds Kharg Island Ahead of Trump's Deadline; Update: Fractures? just to get their attention. At Insty, VodkaPundit thinks MOST INDICATIONS ARE THAT TRUMP’S CEASEFIRE TALK ARE A SIDESHOW TO KEEP MARKETS CALM AND EUROWEENIES FROM YAPPING TOO MUCH: OSINTtechnical @Osinttechnical, "Iran has cut off direct communications with the U.S. over Trump’s “civilization will die” threat this morning. -WSJ"

That didn't age well: Stacy McCain, Trump Declares Ceasefire in Iran. Beege Welborn at Hat Hair, BREAKING: We Have a Ceasefire. Sarah Anderson at PJM, BREAKING: Trump Announces a Ceasefire. Sundance at CTH, President Trump Postpones “Civilization” Ending Attack on Iran Contingent Upon Hormuz Strait Opening. Althouse cites Trump "... a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East...." "Trump at Truth Social, an hour ago: Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East. We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate. Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated. On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP." And, "There will be lots of positive action! Big money will be made." "Trump at Truth Social: A big day for World Peace! Iran wants it to happen, they’ve had enough! Likewise, so has everyone else! The United States of America will be helping with the traffic buildup in the Strait of Hormuz. There will be lots of positive action! Big money will be made. Iran can start the reconstruction process. We’ll be loading up with supplies of all kinds, and just “hangin’ around” in order to make sure that everything goes well. I feel confident that it will. Just like we are experiencing in the U.S., this could be the Golden Age of the Middle East!!! President DONALD J. TRUMP" We’ll be just “hangin’ around”... ready to bomb you back to the Stone Age if you don't pick up on this lots-of-positive-action vibe. Don't you want big money? The builder wants to build. On top of all of that demolition." Ace, Trump Accepts Deal for Two Week Ceasefire, Saying Sides Are Very Close to a Permanent Deal.

Democrat, progressives and the media reacted about the way you'd expect. Scott Pinsker at PJM has Bad News, Guys: The New York Times Says We Lost the War — and Iran Is Now a ‘Major World Power’. Matt Margolis at PJM, Democrats Called Trump Crazy — Then He Got a Ceasefire with Iran. Bill Kristol @BillKristol, "The Mother of all TACOs." Cynical Publius @CynicalPublius, "Earlier today Ro Khanna was claiming that Trump is a genocidal maniac akin to Hitler. Now he is claiming that Trump is a cheese eating surrender monkey akin to France. How do Democrats reconcile such irreconcilable thoughts inside their heads? There are only two possible explanations: 1. They have zero qualms about lying. 2. They have fully abandoned logic and reason in favor of emotion. Sometimes I feel like Spock gawking at Doctor McCoy." Quote Ro Khanna @RoKhanna, "Trump backed down. No credit to Congress, which barely made a whimper. Credit to the American people—progressive activists & anti-war conservative." Dave Rubin @RubinReport, "Which Panican wants to hand me my “I told you so” award? Trump has been running the same negotiation playbook forever. Pressure, escalation, chaos… then leverage a deal. We’ve watched it happen again and again. This wasn’t complicated. It was basic pattern recognition. While some people were panicking, others were paying attention..." So, we may have a ceasefire. I'm not sure the Iranians will honor it, but if they don't, Trump has plenty of assets to bring to bear as quickly as he wants. FWIW, Marine Traffic doesn't yet show a lot of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a few bulk carriers; I don't see any oil tankers taking the trip. Maybe they're all waiting for someone else to be first.

Mark Penn@Mark_Penn, "War crimes? Senator Merkley from Oregon said that taking out mixed use infrastructure like bridges and power plants would be war crimes and suggested as well that soldiers in the US Army need not follow orders such as that. The Iranians have sent hundreds of missiles targeted at civilian centers in Tel Aviv and throughout Israel as well as towards hotels, plants and airports of UAE and other countries. The civilians are not collateral damage — they are the primary target of hundreds and missiles and drones. And they massacred tens of thousands of their own people — just machine gunned them down. By rulers who have no legitimacy whatsoever..." Douglas Bulloch @douglasbulloch, "Destroying a bridge? Isn’t that a war crime?" Quote Daily Mail @DailyMail, "Ukrainian forces 'used British drones to destroy Russian-held bridge' in first-of-its-kind operation https://trib.al/WzLKJO4." Ari Fleischer @AriFleischer, "Great point. Quote Andrew Kolvet @AndrewKolvet "CONTEXT: Retired fighter pilot Wiz Buckley points out that Mark Kelly targeted civilian infrastructure as a pilot. He targeted power plants, TV stations, and roads in the opening hours of that war, while up until now, President Trump has avoided hitting civilian." Amy Curtis @RantyAmyCurtis, "Ro Khanna supports Hasan Piker, who not only said America deserve 9/11 but applauded the rapes of Israeli women at the hands of Hamas. Those rapes, by the way, are actual war crimes." Quote Ro Khanna @RoKhanna, "We need to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove Trump. Threatening war crimes is a blatant violation of our constitution and the Geneva Conventions." Joel Pollak @joelpollak, "You never lost a wink of sleep over what Iran was doing to its own people, to American soldiers, to Israeli civilians." Quote Aaron Rupar @atrupar "I feel sick to my stomach waiting around today to see what atrocity Trump has in mind for the people of Iran this evening. It's hard to fathom that our other elected leaders aren't able to check him in any meaningful way. It's really an indictment not just of the electorate but..." Decado @ItsDecado, "I am bleeding my pockets dry paying astronomical prices for a half broken internet connection just to read what the outside world is saying. And let me be honest, it is absolutely infuriating to see how completely disconnected so many of you are from the actual mood of the people inside Iran. Do not lose your nerve. Do not be afraid. The narrative you are seeing right now is a complete illusion. The voices currently being amplified online are fake, manipulated, and engineered by the cyber army of this cannibalistic regime..." Flotsam and Jetsam - Trump Sets Sights on Iran's Power, Bridges and Oil

Until now, the military action in Iran has focused on the Iranian leadership, with attacks carried out mostly by Israel, and their military capabilities, largely with US Forces, leaving the civilian infrastructure of power, transport and revenue generation (oil) largely alone, hoping that if and when a suitable government of Iran emerges it won't be left with a country without the ability to take care of itself. Now, Trump is threatening to start dismantling the underpinnings of the regime further, by targeting power plants, bridges and oil production if the IRGC does not open the Straits of Hormuz to international traffic. Jim Hanson @JimHansonDC, "It doesn't get more straightforward than this from President Trump. The gloves come off Tuesday against the Ayatollahs." Althouse has the vapours over his use of the curse word, "Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah." "That's the way our President speaks...Hard to believe, but there it is." Sundance at CTH, President Trump Fills in Remarkable Background Details – Deal Tomorrow or U.S. Begins Systematic Destruction of Iranian Infrastructure. OutspokenSamantha @Outspoken_Sam, "Yes, I did in fact vote for a President who would call our enemies "crazy bastards" and threaten to send them to hell if they didn't take us seriously. What's actually embarrassing is voting for someone to send them money."

Of course, most of yesterday's digits were spilled on the rescue of the weapons system operator of the F15 that was shot down over Iran. It appears the airman, injured in the incident, evaded capture, and climbed a 7,000 ft mountain to wedge himself into a hidey-hole to await rescue. Reports are the US built a runway to land rescue planes in the desert, rescued the WSO, and had to ditch two C-130s in place due to mechanical issues, blowing them up to prevent their secrets from being revealed. It is also reported that Irani resistance slowed the IRGC search, and the CIA promoted a hoax to mislead the IRGC as to where the man was hiding. I'm not so sure of the first, and I expect the CIA to lie at every available opportunity, especially to make themselves look important. Stacy McCain calls it an Easter Miracle: U.S. Rescues Second Crewman From Downed F-15E in Iran. Streiff at RedState explains How the Amazing Rescue of Two American Airmen Unfolded. Althouse has the NYT take, "The rescue followed a life-or-death race between U.S. and Iranian forces that stretched over two days to reach the injured airman, a weapon systems officer, officials said." ""The operation took commandos deep inside Iran and involved hundreds of special operations troops. There were no U.S. casualties among the rescue team, Mr. Trump said. The rescued officer had 'sustained injuries, but he will be just fine,' Mr. Trump added..." From "Iran War Live Updates: U.S. Rescues Officer From Downed Fighter Jet in Iran, Trump Says" (NYT)." From Sundance, President Trump Announces, F-15 Crew Member Rescued in Daring Raid and Former CENTCOM Commander Frank McKenzie Discusses U.S. Rescue Operation in Iran. RedState's Nick Arama thinks the Former CENTCOM Commander Delivers the Perfect Comment on the Rescue of Officer From Iran. wretchardthecat @wretchardthecat, "The most interesting aspect of the weapons officer rescue in Iran was CENTCOM's ability to use so many disparate personnel and capabilities in such a rapid and integrated way. They were making it up as they went along with complex tools and time critical sequences...A lot of the news focus is naturally on the machines, because that is what you can see. But someone told me years ago that air forces are not made out of planes. They are made up of people, and that is what we glimpsed here." Eric Daugherty @EricLDaugh, "BREAKING: Former CENTCOM commander Ret. Gen. Frank McKenzie just said it PERFECTLY “It takes a year to build an aircraft — and it takes 200 YEARS to build a military tradition where you don't leave anybody behind!”" Insty at his substack, The Iran Operation, "Was the secret weapon AI staff work?" Ace cites Tousi TV: Second F-15 Pilot Rescued as Iranian Civilians Aid American Operation to Rescue Him. Morse Report @MorseReport, "BREAKING: The rescued F-15 pilot downed over Iran survived entirely ON HIS OWN inside a mountain crevice: “Completely invisible to the enemy.”" Stephen Green @VodkaPundit, "U.S. engineers were repairing and even building new airfields on Okinawa while the battle for the island was still ongoing." Good riddance really." Northern Barbarian @xnoesbueno, "OK. To recap. In the last 24 hours: 1) American military set up a base within enemy territory to rescue a downed flier, defying the ill-wishes of countless lefty douchebags plus fulfilling the shahadat jones of untold IRCG and Basij. 2) Americans reclaimed their indigenous rights to the Moon, declared it the 51st state, named it Trump, that our crazy orange president may moon his adversaries and nattering naysayers unto eternity. This will be most fun during those periods when the celestial orb formerly known as the Moon appears in an orange-ish hue. The phenomenon formerly known as a blood moon will henceforth be called a more Trumpy Trump. 3) Canadians, feeling the sting of American mockery, got pissed off. 4) King Charles III affirmed his allegiance to Islam, in an act of the kind of obtuse regal boneheadedness that traditionally has preceded the downfall of kings. 5) France douchebaggedly asserted its Frenchness on the international stage, in an act of the kind of obtuse French boneheadedness that is likely to bite France in the ass. 6) America, Fuck Yeah (Also, American astronauts, with a Canadian along for the ride, unclogged a space toilet enroute to Trump, the celestial object formerly known as the Moon)." And, Northern Barbarian @xnoesbueno, "The phrase that comes to mind is, "America, Fuck Yeah." Quote RiverOaksGuy @Bowtiedplayer, "Imagine being Iran's leadership right now You once were the feared boogie man of the Middle East. Instead, you get the complete shit kicked out of you for 5 weeks straight, your entire navy sunk, your supreme leader killed, and you FINALLY shoot down 1 plane." At Calling All Rush-Babes, *About that rescue of a downed pilot inside Iran. America Wins! A Driscolly post at Insty, “IT’S A TESTAMENT TO THE U.S. MILITARY THAT NO AMOUNT OF EQUIPMENT IS MORE VALUABLE THAN A SINGLE AIRMAN’S LIFE:” Peter Meijer @PeterMeijer, "Between January’s Maduro extradition and today’s F-15 WSO rescue, President Trump is demonstrating an exceptionally high risk tolerance for military operations in his second term. Not a great time to be an adversary of the US!" Quote RedDevil @Snakeeater36 "SOF elements made a flying ORP and went and got dude in the dead of night….possibly dismounted, then BIP’ed the plane, and left. I think we have entered a time where our military is allowed to take bolder risks than we have seen in a long time."

While progressives aren't yet so obtuse as to actually express their anger at the military's (and by extension, Trump's) victory in this rescue, they have begun to counterattack by highlighting the cost of the incident, four airplanes lost (the F15, an A10 Warthog, and two C-130s). Bad Hombre @Badhombre, "Trump orders two transport planes blown up so Iranians don’t steal and reverse-engineer our technology after a wildly successful rescue mission of two American pilots deep inside Iranian territory. Biden leaves behind $85 billion in military equipment to the Taliban and over 100 military K9s abandoned at Kabul airport during a disastrous withdrawal that killed 13 service members. Take a guess which one Democrats are calling a success. InfantryDort @infantrydort, "America, please don’t listen to the new narrative that we wasted so much equipment to save one life. There’s a reason recruiting is through the roof. And it’s because we don’t leave your sons and daughters behind enemy lines because it’s financially convenient." Lee (Greater) @shortmagsmle, "I’m noticing a lot of foreigners who seem to not understand why we’d risk hundreds of lives, spend millions of dollars, and sacrifice several aircraft to rescue one guy. And the reason they don’t understand is also the reason people can’t be made American by a piece of paper." Quote Daniel Foubert @Arrogance_0024 "Lose all this to rescue 1 pilot and call it your greatest military success of all time." Varad Mehta @varadmehta, "Can't wait to hear tomorrow about how the US being able to conduct a massive search and rescue op inside Iran, find the missing airman while killing a bunch of Irani goons, and then escape more or less unscathed, is a defeat for America and makes the mullahs stronger than ever." Rabbi Linda Goldstein @realrabbilinda, "Imaging losing 1 plane for every 13,000 strike missions and thinking that America is winning the war in Iran. At this rate, Iran can absorb 52,000,000 strikes to down the remaining 4,000 US strike aircraft. America will lose." From Twitchy, T. Becket Adams Nails the Moment: Europe Disappointed U.S. Actually Saved Its Pilot in Iran. Kama @Kama_Kamilia, "Im beginning to understand, why Americans feel the way they do about us. Tom Kratman @TKratman, "From Martin Iles, reposted: Having lived in the USA for nearly two years, I've realised something. The USA and the remainder of the Western world are no longer aligned. We all laugh and mock when the Americans say, "Freedom!" because we truly think we're as free as they are. Wrong. We're not. Not even close. The laws, the mindset, and the behaviour, is totally different in this regard..." Eric S. Raymond @esrtweet, "Hello, Europeans. The first thing you need to understand about the rant I'm about to utter is that I'm not MAGA, not a Trumpite, but a libertarian who has in the past nevertheless been strongly supportive of US military presence overseas. Because I want the wars that defend this country to be fought in somebody else's country, as far away from me as possible with a nice big ocean in the way. Also relevant: I have a history of having lived in Europe and traveled there extensively. I was at one time bilingual in English and Spanish, and have been passably fluent in Italian and French as well. I could probably still find my way around London and Rome and central Paris reasonably well. So if you're tempted to tell yourselves that I'm some kind of parochial American hick, abandon that hope. Flotsam and Jetsam - X 'Glitch' Exposes Foreign Propagandists

Let's see what washed up over the weekend. In the funnest story from the weekend, Fox X's new location feature exposes apparent fraudster accounts posing as Americans, Gaza journalists "Popular accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers deleted and scrutinized after being revealed as overseas operations." Pirate Wires, Foreign Rage Farmers Exposed by X in Major Update "X just revealed the location of every user on the platform, triggering chaos among foreign rage farmers and slop peddlers — the massive ranks of which have shaped our culture now for years." Rage farmers, I like that. A Driscolly post at Insty, WHOA: Major Foreign Propagandists Utterly Exposed After X Glitch Reveals Account Locations. "A temporary glitch on X led to a credibility bloodbath for a variety of foreign propaganda accounts that were either posing as Americans or lying about their locations in other ways. Days prior, Head of Product Nikita Brier had announced a new feature revealing the origin and current location of users. When it rolled out, though, only account owners could view it. That all changed on Friday night, though. In what is assumed to have been a mistake, everyone’s origins and current locations were made public for about an hour before disappearing. In one instance, it was revealed that one of Hamas’ biggest simps has been lying about being in Gaza." And Insty himself, AS MUCH OF A SCAM AS THE TIKI-TORCH NAZIS WERE: Shaun Maguire @shaunmmaguire, "Greatest feature in a decade. Everything is an Op." A Skunk By Any Other Name

Still stinks as Anthropogenic Climate Change activists consider yet another name change. Breitbart, Alarmists Propose Rebranding ‘Climate Change’ for Greater Shock Value
Climate change alarmists are pushing for a change in vocabulary to scare people into taking global warming more seriously, starting with terms like “global meltdown” and “climate collapse.”

Writing for AdAge this week, Aaron Hall argues that in order to get people to “take action” against climate change, “rebranding” is crucial, since people have gotten too used to the idea that climate is changing and need to be shocked into the notion that the world as we know it is ending.

“Is there a better way to convey the urgency of the situation, while also encouraging folks to take action? Could the tools of branding and brand naming create a more resonant, powerful name?” Mr. Hall asks.

What he and his marketing team came up with was a series of much more frightening labels to stick on climate change in the hope of jolting people into meaningful engagement.

The terms “Global Meltdown” or “Global Melting,” for instance, deliver a more negative image than mere “Global Warming,” he contends. “The names signal that ice caps are melting, but also create a more visceral image in the mind — that real feeling of ‘melting’ when it’s too hot outside. A meltdown is a disastrous event that draws from the ultimate terror of a nuclear meltdown, an apt metaphor for global destruction.”

“Climate Collapse” and “Climate Chaos,” on the other hand, “instill a clear message or even a direct call to action,” Hall notes, adding that “there’s nothing neutral about collapse or chaos.”

To up the rhetoric even more, Hall proposes the weaponized term “Scorched Earth.”

“Sometimes a brand name needs to be hyperbolic to truly capture hearts and minds. If we don’t take massive action now, Earth will be uninhabitable — an irreversible barren wasteland,” he insists. “‘Scorched Earth’ paints the direst picture of what’s to come and what we must avoid and is likely the edgiest brand name from our exploration.”

“Whatever we call it, impending climate doom is upon us if we don’t act quickly,” Hall concludes. “Perhaps a new name will shift the needle, even if just a little.”

Mr. Hall’s contention that it does not matter if what is said is true as long as it elicits the necessary response is reminiscent of similar assertions by leaders of the Extinction Rebellion (XR) movement.

Chesapeake Bay Propaganda Tool Designed to Scare

New online tool shows climate change in Chesapeake region, county by county
A new online tool developed by researchers at Cornell University in New York offers a year-by-year, county-by-county snapshot of those changes.

The interactive analysis focuses on the Northeast, so it incorporates much of the Chesapeake Bay’s watershed — Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York and West Virginia — but ignores Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Still, the website’s centerpiece — a clickable map that enables users to find climate data ranging from 1950-2013 in each county — underscores that the vast majority of the watershed is getting hotter and rainier.

Just about all of the watershed’s counties included on the map have experienced warmer annual average temperatures since 1980, according to the data Cornell used to develop its tool.

Some examples:

  • In Franklin County in south-central Pennsylvania, the average annual temperature has risen at a rate of 0.3 degrees Fahrenheit per decade since 1950. But that rate jumps to 0.7 degrees when measured since 1980, suggesting things are getter hotter faster.
  • In Maryland’s Prince George’s County, the typical low temperature has warmed up a full 1 degree per decade since 1980.
  • In New York’s Chemung County, average annual precipitation increased at a rate of 2.3 inches per decade from 1980-2013.
  • In Sussex County in Delaware, the typical daily high temperature ranged from 64 degrees in 1958 to 69.5 degrees in 2012. But the overall trend suggests it is increasing at a rate of 0.2 degrees per decade.
What lovely cherry picking! 0.3 degrees per decade! Can you feel a difference of 0.3 degrees? Prince Georges County MD is a growing urban center, and we can expect the Urban Heat Island effect to increase the temperature. 0.23 extra inches of rain per year in Chemung County, where the annual rainfall is 33 inches. 0.2 degrees per decade. 2 degrees per century! Be  afraid! Be Very Afraid!
