It's been building recently, but yesterday a wave of articles concerning Artificial Intelligence flooded the news, and it's becoming a partisan issue, with Democrats, in general, and in league with Big Tech, calling for more government control, and President Trump, and many Republicans seek to quell the anti-AI movement to preserve America's lead over the Chinese in the field. The Chinese, for their part, are doing all they can to support a growing anti-AI (and anti-data center) movement in the US. It's all too easy to foment fear of the unknown newfangled modern stuff.
From Roger Kimball at Am Great, The Madness of the Anti-AI Crowd, "AI is not a departure from mankind’s toiling in the garden of natural knowledge but an extension of that knowledge." David Marcus @BlueBoxDave, "Oh, is it another existential crisis like Covid and climate change that means we have to surrender our freedom to the smart people? Right on time." Quote David Axelrod @davidaxelrod, "Everyone from AI whistleblowers to the titans of the AI platforms warn about the catastrophic risk to humanity of supeintelligent models that are rapidly evolving. The @POTUS, with deep political and business ties to the industry, dismisses it as a "hoax."" Leslie Eastman at LI, Trump Completely Rejects AI “Experts” Push to ‘Pace the Frontier’ “We’re leading China in AI. We’re the most sophisticated country in the world, and frankly, I want to keep it that way, because whoever wins AI wins.” Sayer Ji @sayerjigmi, " 1/MAJOR ESCALATION: Barack Obama just told Hakeem Jeffries to make AI regulation the center of the Democratic agenda — “once you are speaker.” The NYT story reads like a former president weighing in. Read it closely and it’s something else: the next domino in an eighteen-day sequence. Here’s the sequence..." From WUWT, UN Tries to Insert itself into Calls for AI Regulation. C3 @C_3C_3, "I’m no expert on AI but… I’m an expert on recognizing an op when I see one. If you lived through Russiagate, Covid & 2020 you can see it. You can feel it. You know it. You’re immune to DC’s ops. And we’re watching an op. BO, Hillary, Uniparty & Media are the tell. Facts." Jordan Schachtel @JordanSchachtel, "Two of the reporters on the byline are funded by the Tarbell Center, an AI doomer org controlled by Kamala Harris megadonor Dustin Moskovitz. Tarbell gives journalists large grants to insert AI doomer stories into prominent outlets. @TIME did not disclose the affiliation." Rooke Poole @rookepoole, "I followed the money behind the “slow down AI” movement. What I found is not a secret conspiracy. It is more interesting than that. It is a documented influence network connecting billionaire funders, nonprofits, creators, media, activists, frontier labs, and lawmakers." Clandestine @WarClandestine, "All the bitching and moaning about AI ending humanity and data centers ruining the world, is propaganda astroturfed by our foreign adversaries. They aim to influence and spook US citizens and lawmakers, to prevent the US from dominating the AI race. All of it is bullshit. The Left used the same exact tactic in an attempt to prevent the US from becoming energy independent. That’s why they are so against fracking, and why they were obsessed with global warming and the green new deal nonsense..." At Althouse, "Time Has Run Out for AI Risk Deniers/The recent spate of reports about the technology’s destructive power underline two prime directives: Be afraid, and regulate aggressively." "It's time to panic and legislate like hell, according to the headline at The Nation. How can that heavy-handed fear mongering not make a reader skeptical? I would think The Nation would at least want to be cagier about what it thinks of its own readers."
Peter St Onge, Ph.D. @profstonge, "Turns out the "third party" Anthropic wants to use to gatekeep AI is *funded* by Anthropic." Quote Kevin Bass @kevinnbass, "I have conducted an audit of Anthropic's finances. What I have found is so shocking that I am calling for a Congressional investigation. Anthropic is not just seeking regulatory capture. It has built a regulatory capture machine that cannot be turned off..." Preston Byrne @prestonjbyrne, "Weird how this resignation coincided with - a bunch of UK parliamentary action, including a letter signed by 70 MPs; - UK hearings scheduled, on this very topic; - the release of a Netflix documentary; and the blog post launch by his former boss calling for exactly this and the control of FOSS models; - 2 months after a leading industry consortium recommended censoring/restricting open weight models, something now being called for across the political spectrum." Quote ABC News @ABC, "Jacob Coxon, a former OpenAI and Anthropic employee who quit his job at Anthropic this week, posted a dire warning on X that set off a wave of concern over the growth of AI. “It's pretty important to keep your eyes open about the direction things are..."
Don Surber says Support AI or learn Mandarin, "Developing artificial intelligence is the 21st century’s moon race. This time, the stakes are survival itself." Eric S. Raymond @esrtweet, "So, the Chinese have officially stated that they consider the calls for an AI pause to be a "power play" and will not be participating in any US-led agreements to slow down development. Following AI-doomer logic, it is now absolutely imperative that we bomb the hell out of Chinese data centers before they achieve hard take-off. Which we are assured could happen *any day now*. Safetyists, this is your chance to demonstrate that you really believe what you claim to. Advocate immediate preemptive war against Chinese data centers, or SHUT UP." From NYPo, China’s spymaster warns that AI is a threat to Communist Party rule." Northern Barbarian @xnoesbueno, "OK, that did it. Total AI anarchy, please. Whatever that ChiCom symp doesn’t want. Make it a rule. Carney want that? Nope." Quote Polymarket @Polymarket, "JUST IN: Canada enters the global AI regulation debate, as PM Mark Carney calls for a global “technology stability” body to oversee AI development."
Leslie Eastman at LI, OpenAI Claims Breakthrough in Navier-Stokes Equation, but NYU Mathematician Alleges His Work Was Copied, "Mathematician Tristan Buckmaster asserts OpenAI cribbed the work he and a collaborator had done, which included significant progress toward solving the equation in August. OpenAI announced its team had solved the equation this week."From News Wax, Vance: Iran War to Enter New Phase in Months. "And then the second phase of this is ensure that they're not able to rebuild and try to maintain as much global stability in the wake of that." At Hat Hair, John Sexton worries How Long Will It Take to Repair That Saudi Oil Pipeline? VodkaPundit at PJM imagines Reagan Smiles: Space Force Confirms We Have Weapons in Space. From Reason, Thomas Massie Just Filed 8 Articles of Impeachment Against Pete Hegseth "The Kentucky congressman says he will force a vote on removing Hegseth, who is accused of "abusing the power of his office to ignore congressional war powers resolutions, to kidnap foreign leaders, and to intimidate critics of the Trump administration."" Note that Massie lost his primary after Trump supported his opponent.

We should probably block him and his administration from having access to the NYPD’s terrorism database too." But I don't think it will happen, not yet anyway." Guy Benson @guypbenson, "You don’t have to keep smearing him, Ilhan — one of your fellow leftists already murdered him (“some person did something,” in your parlance)." Quote Libs of TikTok @libsoftiktok, "Ilhan Omar on Charlie’s ass*ssination: “There is no legacy to honor. It was filled with bigotry, hatred, and white supremacy.""
