On the Importance of Picking the Right Major

Hilarity ensued Monday after @Andria_XX complained that social-media criticism of Miley Cyrus included “bodyshaming/slutshaming” and “heteropatriarchal crap.” Readers will recall that Andria has an “Honors BA in Social Justice and Peace Studies” and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Gender Studies. So . . . how’s that going?

While my motives for choosing Oceanography and Biology as joint majors way back when might have been a little suspect (I didn't exactly expect to swim with dolphins, like every other major in Marine Biology, I did have a long standing interest in fish), somehow, some way I learned to like math, a learned a lot of biology, chemistry and physics and made a career out of it.

While having a master's degree in "gender studies" might make you eminently qualified to find fault with men in all things, you've probably lost most of your potential employers.  Welcome to the Obama jobs boom.
