When the Rains Came

Ah, spring. Temperatures are rising, and winter’s grey skies and precipitation yield to generally more sunshine. That also means that water temperatures in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries are on the rise as well, indicating to many living resources that it’s time to be on the move, and in some cases, to reproduce. Salinity levels—a measure of how salty Bay waters are—often change this time of year, too.

While much of the annual pattern for the Bay’s fish, crabs, and other critters is routine, each year is unique. Some springs follow a cold (or warm) winter; others are very rainy (or dry). 2018 was a very rainy year, leading to frequent flooding—resulting in increased freshwater input to creeks, streams, and rivers, and on into the Bay, lowering salinity levels. Salinity, measured in practical salinity units (PSUs), ranges from 0 for fresh water to about 35 in the salty ocean. The Chesapeake Bay’s geography, from the mouths of freshwater rivers to where the Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, includes a wide range of salinities.

It's got us in the 70+ inch category; our rain gauge recorded 72.
In general, salinity at any given spot in the Bay follows a pattern based on rainfall in the area, so that the waters are less salty—lower PSUs—from fall through spring when the Chesapeake watershed generally experiences higher precipitation. Over the summer, salinity slowly creeps up as rainfall drops.

Scientists and resource managers discussed observations of what 2018’s low salinity could mean for the Bay and its critters in December 2018 at a meeting of the Chesapeake Bay Program’s Sustainable Fisheries Goal Implementation Team. Based on early observations, from summer to fall of 2018, oysters experienced some high-mortality events in the upper Potomac River and slower growth in other parts of the Bay. Oysters also benefitted from low levels of disease, which was spread out by the surge of fresh water. Blue crabs and other mobile species generally migrated to avoid low-salinity areas.

How might current conditions affect living resources in coming months?

  • Blue catfish, an invasive species in the Chesapeake Bay that was introduced into some rivers for sportfishing in the 1960s and 1970s. They are top predators and eat pretty much anything—including shad, herring, and blue crab. Given their high abundance and densities, they are likely altering habitat availability and the food web structure for important native species. Blue catfish prefer to stay in areas where the salinity is below 10 to 15 PSU. The low salinity currently in larger areas of the Bay and its tributaries—for example, salinity at the CBIBS Jamestown buoy in the James River was only 0.1 PSU on March 26—means that blue catfish had more habitat to use this year—allowing them to expand their range and potentially move into new tributaries.

This is certainly true. I caught a Blue Catfish way down at the mouth of the Potomac River in late Fall, and several people have reported catching them at Location X this year!

  • Rockfish (striped bass) migrate throughout the year to use waters with differing salinities, spending part of their lives in the ocean. In the spring, rockfish respond to warming temperatures by moving upriver into freshwater areas in the Chesapeake Bay to spawn. They grow more quickly when in water around 7 PSU then they do in water of 0.5 or 15 PSU—so current conditions could encourage faster striped bass growth. Depending on the timing of events, fresher water may enable more zooplankton to exist—and zooplankton is an important food for young striped bass. In high rainfall years, young striped bass are likely to fare well due to larger freshwater nursery habitat areas with abundant zooplankton, and spawning may occur farther downstream than usual.
  • For fish at the bottom of the food chain, like shad and herring—blueback and alewife—warmer waters provide an abundance of resources like zooplankton on which to feed. And all the rain that 2018 and early 2019 brought resulted in higher water levels, giving them more room to move around in—and more room in which to evade predators. With these favorable conditions, shad and herring populations could have a good year.
  • High freshwater flows resulting from 2018’s rainfall may help Atlantic sturgeon, listed as an endangered species in the Chesapeake region. Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University note that the stronger flows may have removed silt from hard-bottom habitats that sturgeon prefer for spawning. Sturgeon would also benefit from the resulting expansion of tidal freshwater areas.
The effects of 2018-19 low salinity levels will not be well known until scientists monitor fish population levels using annual surveys. In the meantime, scientists will have to wait and see what weather this year’s spring brings, which will continue to affect the Bay and its living resources.
All in all, it doesn't sound like bad news.
