Wombat's Monday News Review

As filtered by my interests, from "Live at FiveSeven: 05.04.15"

POLICE KILL TWO GUNMEN OUTSIDE MOHAMMED CARTOON EXHIBIT IN TEXAS - One security guard injured. Do not imagine that you can outgun an art show in Texas. At least one of the gunmen was already known to law enforcement, a so-called "known wolf." Some liberals are already implying that they had it coming. Is this ISIS first attack on US soil?

Grace Lee Whitney, Star Trek’s Yeoman Rand, Dies At 85 - She only played in a few episodes of the first series, and then reprises in the film. In between, she struggled with pills and booze.

Baltimore Ends Curfew - Mosby's throwing the policemen to the mob seems to have quieted things down quickly; but will she be able to get convictions, and if not, will we be back at the same juncture?

Ben Carson Officially Throws His Hat In The Ring - I like Ben Carson, but I think he needs to do something else before running for President. The difference between God and surgeons is that God doesn't think he's a surgeon.

Hillary Bows To The Far Left - duh.

Princess Kate, It’s A Girl!

O’Malley: Washington Has Abandoned America’s Cities - Anyone interested in the story of Baltimore needs to read David Simon:
The drug war began it, certainly, but the stake through the heart of police procedure in Baltimore was Martin O’Malley. He destroyed police work in some real respects. Whatever was left of it when he took over the police department, if there were two bricks together that were the suggestion of an edifice that you could have called meaningful police work, he found a way to pull them apart.
Tiger Woods & Lindsey Vonn Call It Quits - Now who could have seen that coming?

Rep. Van Hollen (D-MD) Blames GOP For America’s Economic Woes - There's no danger of being perceived too far left in his district.

Ohio Gov. Kasich Still Unsure About Presidential Bid - I'm interested, but unconvinced.

Rep. Donna Edwards (D-MD) Claims Too Much Policing Leads To Unrest - She might have a point. Clearly policing in Baltimore went nuts during the drug war, and lots of at least nominally innocent people were run in under O'Malley, but if you're going to have actual laws, you need to enforce them. However, how do you communicate the need for balance to a politician?

The Black Widow Conundrum - Marvel created a role for ScarJo and can't find a way to make a film out of her?
This is either exciting or disappointing. Exciting, because Black Widow has stolen two or three movies from more powerful/more famous/more male teammates. Disappointing, because Black Widow can only steal movies, because Marvel isn’t making a movie called Black Widow. . . It was possible to be optimistic and pessimistic about all of this: To appreciate how the studios were hiring female filmmakers, and to decry how all those female filmmakers were being ghetto-ized into the small corner of Female-Centric Superhero Movies. Wasn’t it Kathryn Bigelow who directed The Hurt Locker, the killer app for Jeremy Renner as an Action Hero? Doesn’t the dinner scene from Lexi Alexander’s Punisher: War Zone make the hallway scene from Daredevil look like the Hawkeye scene from any movie?
How can feminists turn everything into a feminist issue?

Models slip into pajamas for Vogue bash
Instead of watching the MayweatherPacquiao fight on Saturday, models Emily Ratajkowski, Bella Hadid and Constance Jablonski attended a Vogue pajama party in Chinatown.

Also at the Nom Wah Tea Parlor bash, where guests wore silky pj’s or kimonos, were Hailey Baldwin, Alexa Chung, Chloë Sevigny, fotog Mario Testino, designer Alexander Wang and Will.i.am.
Alas, I never get invited to the good parties

Everest Climbing Season Likely Over As Nepal Turns To Rebuilding
Sherpas in Nepal are refusing to rebuild the route on Mount Everest that was destroyed by an earthquake-triggered avalanche more than one week ago, a decision which will likely end this year's climbing season.
Good for the Sherpa's. Make those eco-trourists climb it on their own.
