Tornado Strikes Naptown

The Capital Gazette: Tornado leaves widespread damage in Annapolis as severe storms move through; West Street closed

A tornado was confirmed via radar in Annapolis around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday the National Weather Service said, as the remnants of Tropical Depression Ida reached Maryland, bringing with them powerful storms. Meteorologists warned the tornado could follow a path through Annapolis, Arnold and Severna Park.

Anne Arundel County fire department and mutual aid agencies are investigating storm damage in the Londontown/Mayo/Edgewater area, which sustained substantial storm damage, according to the fire department. There are no reported injuries.

North of the high school in Annapolis, a portion of West Street was closed Wednesday afternoon due to a utility pole blocking both directions of traffic after the tornado blew through Annapolis and caused damage to the area.

West Street is closed in both directions from Chinquapin Round Road past Gibraltar Avenue toward Route 2, according to Annapolis police and fire departments. Several utility poles are down and trees have damaged vehicles in the surrounding area.

In the immediate aftermath of the storm, gas meters were ripped off West Street businesses and trees were knocked down in the Annapolis Gardens neighborhood on Bowman Court, police said.

I got a notice on Facebook that the football stadium friends son's middle school had been "wrecked".

This weather is remnants of Hurricane Ida (now just a tropical depression). There were some pretty clouds moving by at the beach today. We got a few drops of rain, but nothing major.

We're not out of the woods yet.
