I've used a version of this knot for years, using it to secure luggage and and Christmas trees on car roofs, boats onto trailers and many similar applications. I can't even remember when I learned it (probably not in Applications in Oceanography, where I learned most of the important nautical knots). Often, when I use it, people comment on how obviously useful it is, but this is first time I've ever seen it written out.
