A New Tragedy of the Commons

MSNBC Host: We Need To Get Over Idea 'That Kids Belong To Their Parents'

Tragedy of the commons:
In economics, the tragedy of the commons is the depletion of a shared resource by individuals, acting independently and rationally according to each one's self-interest, despite their understanding that depleting the common resource is contrary to the group's long-term best interests. In 1968, ecologist Garrett Hardin explored this social dilemma in "The Tragedy of the Commons", published in the journal Science.
No collective takes as much care of an object, person or business as well as a person who has a real ownership stake.  If the child is "owned" by everyone, no one is really responsible. I would argue that a great deal of what is wrong with the family in the inner cities is that the ownership stake in children has been considerably weakened by the welfare induced death of the two parent family, and the increasing reliance of the resulting one mother families on government to get help support and raise the children.

This would be scarier if it weren't MSNBC.

Thanks to Bert.
