VS Takes On Down's Syndrome Model

At Wa Ex Victoria's Secret features first model with Down syndrome

Sofia Jirau from Puerto Rico is Victoria's Secret’s first model with Down syndrome.

Jirau joins 17 other women as Victoria's Secret launches its Love Cloud Collection, available Thursday.

"One day I dreamed of it, I worked on it and today it is a dream come true. I can finally tell you my big secret," Jirau wrote on Instagram in Spanish. "I am the first Victoria’s Secret model with Down syndrome!"

Jirau, 24, launched her modeling career at the 2020 New York Fashion Week.

In October, she created a Spanish-language campaign called “No Limits” as a display of possibility for people with Down syndrome.

“For me, the most important thing about fulfilling my dreams is to show people around the world that there are no limits and to inspire them to pursue their own dreams,” Jirau wrote on her website. "This is why I always say, 'Inside and out there are no limits' to motivate people to break through their self-imposed limitations."

I'm so old I remember when we referred to people with Down's Syndrome as "mongoloid" or even "mongoloid idiots," since the syndrome produces somewhat of an Asiatic appearance due to enhanced epicanthic fold, and usually, a variable amount of intellectual disability. Although a few fare well at work or school, most do not.

I must say, I'm happy for Sophie to take money from VS, which has been doing a lot to ruin their brand.  I hope someone is looking out for her.

So what do you think?

  1. She’s very pretty with a charming smile and her body type is closer to the average woman. Good for Victoria’s Secret!

  2. Or does it encourage sexual exploitation of the mentally retarded? What's next, adding children to cater to pedophiles? Males to cater to transsexual and cross-dressers?
Sounds like a great way to destroy the brand.
