PSA: Using Native Plants in the Garden

Make Native Plants a Part of Your Landscape

A boost for using native plants in the garden.  I like using native plants. When we built the house we live in now over 20 years ago, we did the minimum clearing of the lot that the builder would tolerate.  We left the rest in native vegetation, including trees, shrubs and undergrowth.  We have also added native species to the landscape, some moved in from our undeveloped lots, and some collected elsewhere in the wild, including Dogwoods, Ironwoods, Beeches, Maples, Joe Pye Weed, Blue Flag Iris, and Hemlocks (barely native), and allowed some of the cleared areas to go back to native, or mostly native, vegetation.

At the same time, we're not dogmatic about it.  We replaced a dead Hickory with a Cryptomeria.  We have non-native Azaleas out in our "wild" zones for color.  Use whatever you like, but consider using some natives.  I don't think you'll regret it.
