Yet another foggy, cool day. It was only 49 F when we left home, and it's only warmed a degree since then. It wasn't too windy, though so the beach was tolerable.
A big raft of Buffies (Bufflehead ducks) hanging off the south jetty.
The tide was quite high, so Skye and I didn't get far down the beach, turning around at the water lapping at the cliff at Calvert Beach. The short walk, and the high tide made it a poor day for fossils, but I did, somehow manage to spot this little jar filler.
Another fossil, coral. During the era that our fossils were laid down, the area was a tropical sea, teaming with fish, (including the sharks), whales and dolphins, and corals. The corals are always broken up (even in the cliffs where they are deposited), which I interpret to mean they were subject to frequent tropical storms and hurricanes.
This story brought to you by Skye, without who I probably would not have ventured forth today.
