State Senators Seek State Sandwich

The soft shell crab sandwich, a fried crab stuffed between two slices of bread, may become an official part of Maryland.

The longtime favorite of locals and tourists — that faces tough competition from the crab cake sandwich every summer — could become the official sandwich of Maryland after two Lower Shore legislators pre-filed bills in the Maryland General Assembly.

“I forget that when you introduce these types of bills they get a lot of attention and, yes, we have more pressing problems, but this will not take a lot of attention by the Maryland General Assembly,” said Sen. Richard Colburn, R-37-Dorchester sponsor of the Senate bill who hopes its passing will boost tourism. “Just as the Smith Island Cake meant good things for tourism, the designation of the soft shell crab will, I think, boost tourism, particularly for those counties on the Eastern Shore.”If passed, this won’t be the first time a staple of the Eastern Shore made its way onto the books in Maryland. In 2008 the Smith Island Cake was anointed the state’s official dessert, joining other categories such as the official state fossil shell the Wilson and the state’s official sport of jousting.
In my mind, the soft shell crab sandwich is the quintessential Maryland sandwich. I don't care whether they make the "official" state sandwich or not.  However, the more time legislators spend making meaningless gestures, the less time they can spend messing things up.
