The Denouement of Weiner's "Bonergate"

I stayed around to watch the Weiner press conference today, but I didn't get a chance to get back to the 'puter to blog it until now.  (OK, I did slide my Bay post for the day in first, but I didn't spend much time thinking about it..). For my foreign, or otherwise uninformed visitors I would suggest you go see The Other McCain's summary of the the "Bonergate" events here to get caught up to date, if you care to.

Weiner was suitably contrite, and he literally sniveled (or was that sniffled) while he admitted he, well, f#cked up.  He apologized for the lies he told to cover up, and when challenged, even apologized to Andrew Breitbart for calling him a liar when he brought the first evidence of the posts. You'd think by now that liberals challenged by Andrew Breitbart would know better than to double down with denial.  He hasn't been caught wrong yet.  He repeatedly said he was most sorry for his wife for having to go through all this BUT he said he would not resign.

Good thing for him the Democrats don't claim to be the party of family values, or the senior members of his party would have force him to resign, like Republican Christopher Lee, who resignation after his posting his bare chest on Craiglist precipitated a special  election, which the democrats won, and with which they were claiming the "Big Mo" going into 2012.

All normal men are one weak moment (or maybe 200, in Weiners case) from finding themselves in a similar situation. I hear there are a few that are utterly asexual, I may even know one.

Questions still remain:

1) Were some of the women who participated in the tweets and facebooking minors?  Did Weiner unknowingly send lewd pictures of himself to minors?  He admitted in the the conference that he assumed the girls were adults, but did not know for sure.  Patterico has credible evidence that minor girls were involved in these tweets.   As a congressperson, will he get the benefit of the doubt and not be charged with a sex offense if that happened?

2) Similarly, if he received and kept any similar pictures from underage girls, will he be charged with child pornography, like many teenagers who have sent and received such pictures?

3) Will his party agree that his contrition is sufficient, and allow him to continue in office?

4) Will anyone ever take anything he says for fact?  He's now a proven liar.

So this will most likely grind away for a while and then fade.  Will he be an effective member of Congress a year from now?
