This doesn't go quite the way you might think:
The two animals involved here are well known to me. The squirrel is a Columbian Ground Squirrel, known locally in Southern Oregon as a Gray Digger (or possibly a California Ground Squirrel, a very common inhabitant of the drier parts of the west. Ted and I used to make extensive use of them as targets. The snake is a Gopher or Bull Snake, also commonly found on the road in the same area. The snake is not poisonous, be capable of giving a nasty bite, with a mouthful of short, needle sharp teeth. Ask me how I know.
