Rule 5 Saturday - The Orville's Anne Winter

Thanks to Mark Zuckerberg, this week's Rule 5 subject is 

Anne Christine Winters (born June 3, 1994) is an American actress. She has played roles in the FX's series Tyrant as Emma Al-Fayeed, ABC's series Wicked City as Vicki Roth, and Netflix's series 13 Reasons Why as Chlöe Rice. She also starred in the films Sand Castles (2014), Pass the Light (2015), The Bride He Bought Online (2015), Mom and Dad (2017), and Night School (2018).

In 2017, she began starring as cancer patient Mia Phillips in go90's drama series Zac & Mia, for which she won the 2018 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Digital Daytime Drama Series. In season 3 of the Hulu science fiction series The Orville (2022), she played the role of Ensign Charly Burke.

Winters was born in Dallas, Texas, to Karen and Harry Winters. She grew up in nearby Lewisville. Winters was educated at Prestonwood Christian Academy, a private Baptist school in Plano. When she was ten years old, Winters sang a solo at the American Airlines Center to a crowd of over 24,000 people. She originally planned to attend Southern Methodist University for her college education, but chose instead to relocate to Los Angeles in order to pursue her acting career.

She is reputed to be Seth McFarlane's girlfriend, having met on the set of the Orville.

We've watched some of the Orville (though not Season 3, with Anne). It's a mildly amusing parody of the Star Trek franchise, which is saying something, since the Star Trek franchise is pretty much it's own parody.

WaPoo, Nichelle Nichols, who played Uhura in ‘Star Trek’ franchise, dies at 89

Nichelle Nichols, an actress whose role as the communications chief Uhura in the original “Star Trek” franchise in the 1960s helped break ground on TV by showing a Black woman in a position of authority and who shared with co-star William Shatner one of the first interracial kisses on American prime-time television, died July 30 in Silver City, N.M. She was 89.

Her son, Kyle Johnson, announced the death on Facebook. Her former agent Zachery McGinnis also confirmed the death but did not have further details. Ms. Nichols had a stroke in 2015.

Ms. Nichols, a statuesque dancer and nightclub chanteuse, had a few acting credits when she was cast in “Star Trek.” She said she viewed the TV series as a “nice steppingstone” to Broadway stardom, hardly anticipating that a low-tech science-fiction show would become a cultural touchstone and bring her enduring recognition.

Rule 5 Saturday - Witcher Women

This Rule 5 post celebrates the women of The Witcher, Net Flix's attempt to fill the void left by Game of Thrones. It's not GOT, but I found it at least amusing.

Two women are among the main characters, Anya Chalotra as Yennifer, a pig slopper turned powerful sorceress (left) and Freya Allan as Princess Cirilla aka Cirri, (right) as a child prize and later wunderkind. 

Together, and separately they romp a fiction earth with the Witcher, a mutant warrior created by magic to help destroy the monster plaguing mankind. Yep, it's kind of hokey...

Bounding into Comics reports Deep Space Nine Actress Chase Masterson Says She Would Only Return For Continuation “If It Had To Do With Social Justice”

Though currently in an age of endless reboots and continuations, some of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s cast members – particularly actress Chase Masterson – have made it clear that they have some conditions that must be met before they would even entertain the idea of returning.

Speaking to a crowd of fans at the Deep Space Nine panel held during the recent April 8th-10th Star Trek: Mission Chicago fan convention, series stars Nana Visitor (Kira Nerys), Alexander Siddig (Julian Bashir), and Chase Masterson (Leeta), were asked – as many actors of widely-beloved series are nowadays – if they would ever return to the Bajor-orbiting space station for further adventures.

While all three were open to the idea, each posited that their return would be conditional on any future project meeting individually-specified criteria.

 

Rounding out the trio’s set of answers, Masterson put forth, “I would want to make sure that Lita – I don’t think they need me anymore to be any kind of thing other than a strong character.”

“And I think if it had to do with social justice, it could work,” she continued. “But anything else, I think we’ve already done that. I think moving along the social justice narrative in terms of Latinum not being the focus on Ferenginar. That, I’d like to do.”

Um, no thanks. I was never a great DS9 watcher, although I vaguely recall some of it. The Ferengi were the best part. Why ruin them by reforming them and turning them into good socialists like all of Hollywood. Find a younger and hungrier actress.

RIP: Yvette Mimieux -TV's First Bellybutton

NYPo, Yvette Mimieux, ‘The Time Machine’ actress, dead at 80

The Time Machine, a timeless classic

Yvette Mimieux, star of the 1960 sci-fi flick “The Time Machine,” has passed away at 80.

She died in her sleep from natural causes on Tuesday morning, her family’s rep confirmed to Deadline.

Mimieux just celebrated her 80th birthday on Jan. 8.

She was best known for starring alongside Rod Taylor in the film adaption of H.G. Wells’ novel “The Time Machine,” but had notable roles in the movies “Where the Boys Are,” “Platinum High School,” “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” and “Light in the Piazza.”

Mimieux later made a foray into television, guest starring on two episodes of the Richard Chamberlain series “Dr. Kildare.” On the show, she made history by becoming the first person on American television to show her belly button.

In 1974, she penned a thriller script for Aaron Spelling titled “Hit Lady.” She played the eponymous assassin in the ABC TV movie.

She also starred in 1976’s “Jackson County Jail,” an edgy crime thriller that had her wrongfully imprisoned and accused of murdering a guard who assaulted her.

 And a very nice bellybutton it was.

During her career, she was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards. She retired from acting in 1992 after her final TV movie, “Lady Boss.” . . .

Mimieux was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1942 to a French father and Mexican mother. She had two siblings, a sister and a brother. Mimieux made six movies before she was 21 and gained a reputation for portraying “sensitive” roles. “I suppose I had a soulful quality. I was often cast as a wounded person,” she told the Washington Post in 1979.

Rule 5 Saturday - Virginia Madsen

Somebody at Facebook seriously wants me to do this. She keeps showing up. One of those faces that's familiar, even if you don't remember her name: Virginia Madsen:

Virginia Gayle Madsen (born September 11, 1961) is an American actress and film producer. She made her film debut in Class (1983), which was filmed in her native Chicago. After she moved to Los Angeles, director David Lynch cast her as Princess Irulan in the science fiction film Dune (1984). Madsen then starred in a series of successful teen movies, including Electric Dreams (1984), Modern Girls (1986), and Fire with Fire (1986).

Madsen received further recognition for her starring role as Helen Lyle in the horror film Candyman (1992). For her performance in Alexander Payne's comedy-drama Sideways (2004), Madsen was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

I've certainly seen the original Dune, and am looking forward to seeing the remake.

On television, Madsen has appeared in the comedy-drama series Moonlighting (1989), the comedy series Frasier (1998), the period drama series American Dreams (2002–2003), the murder mystery series Monk (2002-2009), the science fiction series The Event (2011), the supernatural drama series Witches of East End (2013–2014), the political thriller series Designated Survivor (2016–2017), and the DC Universe superhero horror series Swamp Thing (2019).

Rule 5 Saturday - Another Sci-Fi Cutie - Jewel Staite

One of my original "Rule 5" posts was "Sultry Sci-Fi Sweetness" featuring Morena Baccarin, a star in Firefly and Star Gate, to name a a couple. Today's winner, Jewel Staite was a star in some of the same shows:

Jewel Belair Staite (born June 2, 1982) is a Canadian actress. She is known for her roles as Kaylee Frye in the Fox television series Firefly (2002–2003) and its spin-off theatrical film Serenity (2005), and as Jennifer Keller on Sci-Fi Channel's science fiction television series Stargate Atlantis (2007–2009). Staite also starred as Catalina in Space Cases (1996), as "Becca" Fisher in Flash Forward (1996–1997), as Raquel Westbrook in the Canadian drama The L.A. Complex (2012), and as Caroline Swift in AMC's crime drama The Killing (2013–2014).

 

Before taking on the role as Dr. Keller, she previously played the Wraith child Ellia in the Stargate Atlantis episode "Instinct". She also appeared in the 2010 Syfy film, Mothman, under direction from Sheldon Wilson. Also in 2010, Staite guest-starred in an episode of Warehouse 13 as the love interest of Sheldon (played by Sean Maher, who played her love interest in Firefly), and in 2011, she guest-starred on an episode of Supernatural as a former love interest of Sam. 

Staite was born in White Rock, British Columbia. The youngest of seven children, she modeled as a child and has acted since age six. She has stated that she is of British, Irish, French Canadian, and Iroquois ancestry. Staite attended Vancouver Film School and worked at the Vancouver Youth Theatre.

Rule 5 Saturday - Out of the Expanse - Cara Gee

Late last week I finally finished season 5 of The Expanse, the formerly Sci-Fi, then Amazon Prime series based on the books by James S.A. Corey (a pseudonym for two other writers). The Expanse has already provided one Rule 5 winner, Frankie Adams. 

In the Expanse, Cara Gee plays the hardest woman in the known universe, belter (as in asteroid belt) Camina Drummer:

Gee is primarily known as a stage actress in Toronto, Ontario, where her acting credits have included productions of Margaret Atwood's The Penelopiad,  Daniel MacIvor's Arigato, Tokyo, Tomson Highway's The Rez Sisters, Cliff Cardinal's Stitch, Birdtown and Swanville's 36 Little Plays About Hopeless Girls  and Louise Dupré's Tout comme elle. 

She made her feature film debut in Empire of Dirt for which she was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award. For this role, she also won a Special Jury award at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival as well as an award for Best Actress at the American Indian Film Festival. In 2013, at TIFF, Gee was named one of the festival's annual Rising Stars.

Gee also worked in television, playing guest roles in the television series King and Republic of Doyle. In 2014, she starred as one of the lead characters in the Western drama series Strange Empire on CBC Television, for one season until it was cancelled in 2015

Gee is Ojibwe. She was born in Calgary, Alberta, and raised in Aurora, Ontario. She married Richard de Klerk in 2019. Gee was eight months pregnant while filming the fifth season of The Expanse.

When Science Fiction Becomes Science Reality

Malcolm MacDonald, underwent a £50,000 NHS-funded procedure to have the appendage attached to his arm, after a long-term perineum infection caused his penis to turn black and fall off in 2014.

He told The Sun how he became a recluse and turned to alcohol after losing his manhood, but has found hope after pioneering surgery meant he could have 'Jimmy,' as he calls it, attached to his arm, in the hope one day it could be moved back between his legs.

A £50,000 NHS procedure saw Malcolm have a penis grafted to his arm, but four years on it has not been moved to his groin.

The 45-year-old mechanic from Norfolk told the paper: 'Of course it is mad - having a penis on your arm. Not even I am used to it. But when you think about it, it's actually amazing.'

Which, in turn reminded me of a SciFi short story I read years ago, probably as a teenager, about a man exiled on a planet named Sheol, where you would grow parts that would be cut off for medical use. Since you can find anything (almost) on the internet, a quick search turned up the Wikipedia entry for A Planet Named Shayol (yeah, I spelled it wrong, but it still found it).

"A Planet Named Shayol" is a science fiction story by American writer Cordwainer Smith (the pen name of Paul Linebarger). Like most of his science fiction work, it takes place in his Instrumentality of Mankind setting. It was first published in Galaxy Science Fiction magazine in October 1961.

The protagonist, Mercer, who lives within the Empire, has been convicted of "a crime that has no name". He is condemned by the Empire to the planet Shayol, in which he lives in a penal colony whose inhabitants must undergo grotesque physical mutations caused by tiny symbiotes called dromozoans. Most grow extra organs, which the Empire harvests for medical purposes. The bull-man B'dikkat administer the prisoners drugs to alleviate the pain of their punishment and from their surgeries. . .

How About a Rookie?

In the continuing drive to record TV's policewomen before the tides of political correction eliminate their memory, may I present Melissa O'Neil:

Melissa Crystal O'Neil (born July 12, 1988) is a Canadian singer and actress. In 2005, O'Neil won the third season of Canadian Idol, the first Canadian female to have won. As an actress, she is known for her roles as Two/Rebecca/Portia Lin on the Syfy science fiction series Dark Matter and as Officer Lucy Chen on the ABC police procedural drama series The Rookie. 

What, she doesn't look like a typical Irish cop to you? That's racist!

O'Neil was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Her mother is Chinese via Hong Kong, and her father is of Irish descent.

In December 2014, O'Neil was cast in the starring role of Two/Rebecca/Portia Lin, on the Syfy TV series space opera, Dark Matter. It was a role she played from 2015 to 2017, for three seasons of the show.

In 2018, O'Neil played the role of Suki in The CW procedural crime drama iZombie created by Rob Thomas and had another recurring role in the thriller Condor, a TV remake of Three Days of the Condor.

In October 2018, O'Neil was cast in the role of Officer Lucy Chen in the ABC television police drama series, The Rookie, where she plays a fellow rookie police officer opposite Nathan Fillion. O'Neil's character, which initially was Fillion's love interest, has shifted into a more ensemble role.

Rule 5 Saturday - From Pandora's Box, Priscilla Quintana

After a few minutes in the "show hole" this week, I decided to check out the new CW series Pandora, starring Priscilla Quintana in as Jax/Pandora. Good enough for a Rule 5 post!

If you're curious about Pandora, you've got every reason to be. Pandora's showrunner Mark A. Altman says the show "[Is] part space adventure, part college drama and there’s also a Game of Thrones/X-Files-like conspiracy that unfolds as well. I think that’s going to feel really unique and exciting for audiences when they watch the show this summer. This will hopefully be a family you want to invite into your home every week.” Since Priscilla is ostensibly the lead of the show she's obviously hoping that it's got legs and sticks around for a long, long time to come. The show also tips its hat to shows like Star Trek who often use their show to address common issues of the day in relatable ways. 

After two episodes, I'm undecided over the continued value of the series, but I have no doubt as to Priscilla's continued success as a model and actress:

Being born and raised in Southern California, Priscilla was exposed to the world of show business nearly as early as she was exposed to the idea of altruism and of supporting your neighbors. She was in the right part of the world to support her burgeoning interest in the arts and eventually enrolled in film school. While she was there, she made connections that got her gigs working as a model. From there on out it wasn't long before she was booking commercials and then booking more prestigious work, like her roles in Traffik and Polaroid. If you recognize her face but haven't seen those flicks maybe you know her from the Showtime series,Masters of Sex which she has also appeared on.

So where does the culture of giving back come into play when you're also a young star on the rise? Priscilla has thoughts. “I think success in acting will be a way for me to build a platform to do even more. For the last three or four-ish years, I’ve been going to shelters to see what dogs are set to be put down and will bring them home to try and find them new homes. That was all out of my own pocket, but as a struggling model/actress, you don’t really have very deep pockets, right? So there was only so much I could do. But I figured a way to bring awareness to this was to get a name for myself and, in turn, hopefully be able to grow something incredible and something that’s unforgettable."

Rule 5 Saturday - When In Doubt, Send the Marine - Frankie Adams

The Martian Space Marine, that is. One of my secret (or not so secret) vices is Sci-Fi. Lately, when Georgia goes to bed early, rather than watch a show we might watch together some other time, I fire up the Amazon Fire Stick, and watch an episode or two of "The Expanse" in which Frankie Adams has taken a major role starting in Season 2 as the kick-butt Martian marine gunnery sergeant Bobbie Draper.

Frankie Adams (born January 3, 1994) is a New Zealand-Samoan actress, best known for her roles as Bobbie Draper in the science fiction television series The Expanse and as Ula Levi in the prime-time soap opera Shortland Street.

Adams was born on the island of Savai'i in Samoa and is the oldest of three daughters. She attended Auckland Girls Grammar School. As a boxer, Adams has participated in a Fight for Life charity boxing event, trained by Lolo Heimuli.

Blade Runner Babe Busted for Burglary

An iconic android goes bad. Actress Sean Young wanted for questioning in burglary

Police say actress Sean Young is wanted for questioning after she was caught on surveillance video stealing laptops and video production software from a store in New York City.

Police say employees at a store in Queens reported a burglary Thursday. They say surveillance video showed Young and a male companion breaking in and stealing laptops and software worth about $12,000.

A representative for Young did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

The 58-year-old Young starred in 1980s movies including "Blade Runner," ''No Way Out" and "Wall Street." She recently appeared in "The Alienist" on TNT.

Young has been known for erratic behavior over the years. She was arrested outside an Oscars party in 2012 after she was accused of slapping a security guard.

Should be wary about lithic projectiles. Stacy McCain: Disney Drops ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Director Over ‘Indefensible’ Tweets

James Gunn, who directed the Disney-owned Guardians of the Galaxysuperhero movies series, had recently used his Twitter account (with more than 500,000 followers) to bash President Trump.

Gunn’s unapologetic leftism attracted scrutiny from Trump supporters, including Mike Cernovich, who discovered and publicized Gunn’s old tweets making tasteless jokes about rape and pedophilia.

The ironic point, that Gunn had applauded Roseanne Barr’s firing from Disney-owned ABC because of her offensive tweet about former Obama White House official Valerie Jarrett, seems to have been missed by Gunn’s defenders. At any rate, Disney was not amused:

The move comes after conservative personalities resurfaced old tweets Thursday in which the filmmaker joked about controversial topics such as pedophilia and rape. Gunn has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump.
“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him,” Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in a statement Friday.

There is a debate among conservatives about whether this was a good thing. Do we really want to play by the Left’s rules?

The counter-argument here is that only when the left is forced to live by the awful rules it tolerates for the right will the rules change. . . .
Maybe this is a teaching moment for the left but I sort of doubt they’ll get anything out of it. They don’t really think they’ll ever pay a price because they’re absolutely certain they are on the side of the angels (about everything). So I think the main thing to do here is to keep saying that social media mobs are a bad thing and not stop saying it just because the mob got someone on the left this time.

By the way, there are some who suggest that Gunn wasn’t just “joking” about pedophilia. Gunn is friends with Huston Huddleston, who recently pleaded guilty to child pornography charges.
