Flotsam and Jetsam - Trump for Speaker?

Stacy McCain has an Update From the Dept. of Ironic Crime

Saturday we shared the tale of a young woman who made the fatal choice of Baltimore as an ideal place for “building a deeply inclusive culture.”

Since then, there seems to have been a rash of such ironic crimes. Irony is not to be confused with comedy, of course, and we would not want people to laugh at death, which is not funny. Except sometimes . . .
A left-wing Philadelphia journalist who mocked concern over rising crime in Democrat-run cities was shot to death in his home.. . .

Ryan Carson “dedicated his life to fighting for social justice,” and worked at a left-wing non-profit founded by Ralph Nader. Irony alert:
The 32-year-old was waiting for a bus with his girlfriend when police said he was brutally attacked. Surveillance video obtained by PIX11 News showed an unidentified man, who police described as emotionally disturbed, stabbing Carson several times.. . . .
Let me be clear: Murder is bad. I am anti-murder, and no one should think that I am happy to see left-wingers getting murdered like this. Also, I am anti-carjacking, and thus cannot be accused of celebrating when a Democratic congressmen gets carjacked at gunpoint in D.C. My point in calling attention to these cases is not to advocate in favor of violence against liberals, but rather to say that, when Democrats support soft-on-crime policies, they seldom expect that they personally will suffer as a consequence of the ill-considered policies they embrace. When the boomerang comes whirling around to smack them in the back of the skull? Some might say it serves them right. I’m just saying it’s ironic.

Forget It Jake, It's Baltimore

The Baltimore Banner, Baltimore police issued 50 citations over the last 2 months. Only 3 made it to court. "Officers need more training, better supervision on how to write tickets, acting police commissioner says."

A major initiative of State’s Attorney Ivan Bates to restart police enforcement of so-called “quality-of-life” crimes has gotten off to a rocky start, with officers writing few tickets and the vast majority of those that are written getting preemptively tossed without the defendant ever being notified.

In the first two months since the Baltimore Police Department told its officers to resume citing low-level offenses — such as loitering, drinking alcohol or urinating in public — they’ve issued 50 citations, acting Police Commissioner Rich Worley told the public safety committee of Baltimore City Council on Wednesday afternoon.

But, Worley emphasized, “I’m not disappointed in that.”

And yet there are major issues with how officers are writing the citations, as evidenced by the fact that 47 of the 50 tickets mentioned by Worley were flagged by an internal police department review as inadequate and never made it to the court docket. Worley said those errors would need to be addressed through a combination of fixes to department technology, more officer training and better supervision.

The idea is to have the “most effective, least intrusive” interaction with someone committing a low-level crime, Worley said. That means emphasizing verbal warnings over citations and using arrests as a last resort.

“I’m not happy that only three [citations] made it out of the department, but I am happy that the 47 bad ones got caught,” Worley told City Council. “Because it shows that we’re policing ourselves.”

I know you're out of practice, but a 94% failure rate. Way to go!

Flotsam and Jetsam - More Twitter Files, More J6 and More Politics as Usual

As befits a Saturday, the picking from the wrack line today are most yesterday's news. More ruminations about the testimony of Matt Taibbi and Michael Shellenberger to the House Weaponization Committee (and related events), more discussion of the consequences of Tucker Carlson's J6 video revelation, and just some plain old politics as usual.

Matt Taibbi sums it up at The Democrats Have Lost the Plot "Reclaiming some time, from a House hearing on free speech"

Testifying with Michael Shellenberger before a House Subcommittee was one of the more surreal experiences of my life. I expected serious attacks and spent a nervous night before preparing for them. Then the hearing began, and an episode of Black Adder: Congress broke out. The attacks happened, but it was more farcical horror and a parade of self-owns that made me more sad than upset.

The Democrats made it clear they were not interested in talking about free speech except as it pertains to Chrissy Teigen, seemed to suggest a journalist should not make a living, and finally made the incredible claim that Michael and I represented a “direct threat to people who oppose them.” Of all that transpired yesterday, this was the most ominous development — perhaps not for me but for reporters generally, given our government’s recent history of dealing with people deemed “threats.”

Oregon, My Oregon

From the Free Bacon, Oregon Voters Say They’ve Lost Patience With Democrats

After nearly four decades of Democratic control, voters in Oregon are ready for a change of leadership.

"I don’t like the Democratic approach to anything that’s happening," said Terri, who lives with her husband outside of Salem and dropped her party affiliation two years ago. "I used to be a Democrat for 40 years."

Like many voters who spoke with the Washington Free Beacon, Terri is fed up with President Joe Biden and Oregon governor Kate Brown (D.). She said both have attempted to woo progressives with policies that undermine public safety and contribute to record inflation.

"I want law and order. I want people who have committed crimes to be prosecuted," she said before gesturing to her liberal friend seated next to her. "We want help for those who need it—not help for everybody, like this administration is doing, just handing out money willy-nilly." Her friend agreed.

That dissatisfaction is threatening Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tina Kotek’s chances in Oregon, where voters rank crime and the economy as top concerns. Even after Biden visited the state to stump for Kotek, the Democrat trails her Republican opponent Christine Drazan in recent polls. Statewide surveys also show a majority of Oregonians have an unfavorable view of both Biden and Kotek.

"Kotek is Brown," Terri said, a remark similar to others the Free Beacon has heard while visiting the state. Kotek has sought to distance herself from the least popular governor in America. She criticized Brown in interviews this year but accepted Brown’s endorsement.

Residents’ talk often centers on Portland, where Kotek lives and which has long been a hotbed of far-left activism in Oregon. Anti-police protests inspired by the killing of George Floyd gripped the city for over 100 days in 2020, with rioters damaging businesses and clashing violently against federal and local law enforcement. Data for Progress, a left-wing think tank, found two years later that 62 percent of voters want to see more police in their communities.

"When I drive through Portland, I’m scared. I didn’t used to be scared, but I’m scared," Chris, who volunteers for a nonprofit that helps the homeless, told the Free Beacon. "The police are understaffed and underappreciated."

Sixty percent of Oregon voters want police to step up enforcement against quality-of-life offenses such as public urination and homeless encampments, the Data for Progress survey found.

I guess we'll find out soon enough. It might be easier to just vote Portland out of Oregon.

KT at Haut Hair, Female House GOP candidate comes out swinging after her sexual assault info is released.  At Fox News, Jennifer-Ruth Green takes aim at political opposition after Politico publishes records of her sexual assault "Green tells Fox News Digital that Politico ran the information about her assault after she pleaded with them not to do so." Probably illegally obtained, too.

"I'm surprised because Adam Wren spent time in this article focusing on every single detail down to the skirt I was wearing, down to the color of the skirt I was wearing, down to every single knob I touched, all of those things, but yet he writes clinically about one of the worst days of my life," Green added. "He has no idea the concept of being forced to be in a four by four, round circular area, 30 feet in the ground in a tower where you only have windows and a 30-foot drop on the other side, 30-foot drop to escape somebody who was blocking your path [with] somebody who has a clear intent with a weapon in hand, who is focused on trying to take advantage of you, and you're able to escape that with minimal physical harm. And he wants to reduce that to 50 characters."

Following the assault, Green said she was told to keep quiet about the incident by her superiors in the Air Force, as detailed in the Politico report. Green wrote a letter on Oct. 3 to the relevant U.S. attorney, the Air Force Inspector General and the Department of Defense to request a criminal investigation into how the documents were provided to Politico.

"I write to request an investigation into the unauthorized, unlawful release of my Air Force personnel file," Green wrote in the letter, which was obtained by Fox News Digital. "The fact that my file has been leaked in the course of my campaign for United States Congress leads me to believe that it was politically motivated."

Breitbart reports that in Arizona, Democrat Katie Hobbs Says No to Debate with GOP Opponent Kari Lake – ‘No Desire to Be a Part of the Spectacle’. ABC approves, Some leading Democrats won't debate their election-denying opponents, "Candidates in Arizona and elsewhere say they want to avoid combative spectacles." Althouse takes on the controversy in How is sitting in the audience trying to make a debate happen?
I'm trying to read the NBC News article, "Kari Lake was booted from Arizona town hall audience before Hobbs took the stage/The scene, which took place a forum that has yet to air, is emblematic of the contrasting styles of the two candidates in Arizona's tight race for governor."

I have no quarrel with the headline — other than that "booted" suggests physical resistance to removal — but the text is slanted. It begins:
Democrat Katie Hobbs won’t debate her opponent in Arizona’s race for governor, yet Republican Kari Lake tried to make it happen at a candidate town hall that organizers say she disrupted.
Before describing exactly what Lake did, we're pushed to regard it as disruption. And we're told Lake "tried to make [a debate] happen," so I'm picturing Lake getting on the stage and attempting to argue with Hobbs.
Under the agreed-upon rules for the pre-recorded event, which was taped Monday and airs at 7 p.m. Saturday Arizona time, the candidates were not supposed to be onstage at the same time and Hobbs was supposed to go first.
Again, we're pushed to think that Lake got on the stage with Hobbs, and we're told that would violate the specific rules that Lake had agreed to.

Vicky Taft at PJ Media, Portland Leftists Put Targets on Backs of Cops Involved in Shootings This Week

Portland, Oregon, cops, already diminished, demoralized, and defunded, are being targeted, yet again, by Leftists who have intentionally put a target on their backs. Officers involved in two shooting incidents were outed and doxxed by anti-police Leftists. After a third officer-involved shooting, Portland Police refused to divulge the officer’s identity.

Portland Police union leaders say doxxers have followed officers home and issued flyers with officers’ names and photos in their neighborhoods.

After the three Portland cops were involved in shootings this week, Antifa, BLM, and other Leftists responded by doxxing two of the officers by publicizing their names, addresses, phone numbers, and other personal information. Considering the violent nature of the groups doxxing the officers, they’re essentially putting a hit out on the police.

KGW TV reported that the police union president, Sgt. Aaron Schmautz, demanded the officer’s name from the latest police shooting be hidden.
“Transparency is very important,” said Sgt. Aaron Schmautz, president of the Portland Police Association. “It’s a vital cog in accountability. But when we see officers threatened before there’s any due process before the investigation has even gotten off the ground, people followed home, people having flyers put up in their neighborhood, family members being threatened, this isn’t about transparency. This is about utilizing an event to create chaos and threaten the safety of police officers. It’s just not acceptable. What’s very important is we work together to call out those actors, call out those people.”
The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) issued a statement on the doxxing of the cops in the previous two incidents (one on Tuesday and last Sunday, and the other on Wednesday).
PPB is currently investigating concerns related to doxing and threats to PPB members and/or their families related to recent officer-involved shootings. The investigation of possible doxing and threats raises safety concerns for officers involved in shootings. PPB has determined that there are credible security threats to officers involved in recent shootings and therefore, PPB is withholding the name of the involved member during the pendency of the doxing investigation. Once the investigation is completed, PPB will reassess the security threat and will release the name of the officer involved in the shooting when the threat no longer exists.
Portland’s homicide rate is up by 144 percent, thanks to Antifa and BLM riots demanding the defunding of police. Compared to cities of similar size, Portland has a 207 percent increase in shootings.

They voted poorly.

John Sexton at Haut Hair, recounts how Portland homeless break into vacant homes and police don't have resources to do anything about it

Residents of one Portland neighborhood say as many as 16 people have broken into two vacant houses on their street and are coming in and out at all hours, piling up trash and leaving used needles in the grass.
“It’s unbearable to watch your whole city become a dumpster fire,” said Annette Benedetti, who lives nearby. She described what it’s been like since a group of about 16 houseless people moved into the neighborhood.

“It’s a living nightmare,” added Dustin Shannon, another neighbor. “There’s no peace of mind, there is no sleeping well at night — every little noise, I’m jumpy.”

Shannon and his family have lived in this neighborhood for 19 years. His backyard is next to one of the vacant houses, which he said has been empty for over a year. Now, a group of houseless people has moved in.

“It just gets worse and worse by the day, more and more of them are showing up,” he said. “Stolen cars are showing up, they’ve got a pile of garbage out back that is taller than me.”
Imagine having to work every day so you can pay the mortgage on your Portland home only to have a bunch of unemployed drug addicts break in next door and drive the value of your property down to nothing. No one is going to want to buy these homes so long as the homeless are camped out next door. But when the homeowners call police, they are told there aren’t enough cops to deal with anything as low priority as squatters.
Sergeant Kevin Allen told KGW that the agency sympathizes with neighbors who feel unsafe, but wants to remind people that they are severely short staffed and that they address life safety and major crimes first. Other issues, like the ones in this neighborhood, either have to wait or can’t be addressed at all.

The Portland Police Bureau reports losing more than 250 officers since 2020 and expects to lose another 20 this month, making responding to problems like these even harder.
Dustin Shannon says he’s invested in a security system and a gun. He also keeps a baseball bat by the front and back door at all times.

Defund the police isn’t specifically mentioned in the story that’s precisely what it’s all about. Ever since the city cut funding and let city police officers know they weren’t wanted or appreciated, the number of officers has been dropping. Back in March, Police Chief Lovell said that by the end of July there might be as few as 700 officers for a city of 650,000 people. Frankly, if these homeowners voted for the city leaders who pushed the defund idea two years ago then they have only themselves to blame. This is what happens when you reinvent criminal justice without a plan to deal with crime.

They voted poorly.

Oregon, My Oregon

A two-fer, first John Sexton at Haut Hair, With violent crime rising, size of Portland police department is still shrinking

You almost have to feel sorry for the city of Portland. The city is experiencing record levels of violent crime even as it struggles to maintain the lowest number of police officers it has had since the late 80s/early 90s when the population of of the city was much smaller than it is now.

Beleaguered Mayor Ted Wheeler, who jumped on board the defund the police bandwagon back in 2020, has been trying to address both problem for the past year and so far he has very little to show for it. When it comes to violent crime, the city set a record for the number of shootings in 2021 and is currently on pace to surpass that record by double digits in 2022.
Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell said for 2022, there have been an average of nearly 29 shootings per week in Portland.

If this trend continues, Chief Lovell says there will be a little over 1,500 shootings this year, which is a 14% increase compared to last year and a 266% increase from 2019.
At the same press conference where Chief Lovell made that announcement, the mayor was asked why his efforts to combat violent crime didn’t seem to be working. Mayor Wheeler rambled for a bit and then mentioned the elephant in the room.

“I’m determined to see gun violence reduced in our community and obviously that would happen much faster if we had more officers,” Wheeler said. Later in response to another question he added, “Portland has a critical shortage of law enforcement personnel right now. We are in a 28-year low on a per capita basis.”

In fact the police force is now down to 777 officers. No one is saying the words “defund the police” but that’s what this is about. That and another word Mayor Wheeler never wants to say, “Antifa.” Portland police spent months battling violent goons in the street and got nothing for it but more criticism and the threat of a class action lawsuit by the protesters. So let’s not forget that less than two years ago it certainly was not considered obvious that more officers would mean less crime. On the contrary, the consensus in the city and in many other parts of the nation, spurred by progressive activists and Black Lives Matter protesters, was that we could have less crime if we had fewer officers.

That’s why in June 2020 Mayor Wheeler announced he was cutting funds for school resource officers and also for the city’s Gun Violence Reduction Team, the very team assigned the task of taking guns off the streets and keeping shootings under control. Those funding cuts spurred resignations and retirements and also resulted in some layoffs as Chief Lovell explained, “In 2020 when we took a budget cut, we did everything we could to not layoff people but the handful of people we did layoff were from our personnel division and they were our background investigators.”

In other words, the people needed to make it possible to hire new officers were laid off. Only last Thursday, March 17, 2022, did the city hire 7 staffers to make it possible to once again start the hiring police officers. What have they been doing about the staffing crisis prior to last week?

In October 2021 Mayor Wheeler announced plans to rehire officers who’d retired. Rehiring those officers wouldn’t require background checks because they had already been checked and had worked for the city. But that effort was a complete failure. After reaching out to 81 former officers, exactly two expressed interest in returning to Portland and exactly zero actually returned. “At this point it hasn’t worked the way we would have hoped,” the Mayor admitted.

Meanwhile, Chief Lovell explained that another wave of retirements was coming this July. He said as many as 80 officers would be leaving the force which would reduce the number of officers close to 700 for a city of nearly 650,000 people.
And Jazz Shaw, Oregon businesses sue to stop new climate package
For several years, Democrats in Oregon attempted to implement some form of “cap and trade” program at the state level, intending to reduce carbon emissions. Even in a blue state like Oregon, however, they couldn’t muster the votes to pass it. So last year, Governor Kate Brown established an administrative panel to study the situation and come up with a plan that could be put in place. The resultant “Climate Action Plan” turned out to be an expensive mess, incorporating some of the worst ideas from the federal Renewable Fuel Standard and placing expensive limitations and requirements on nearly every aspect of business being done in the state. This week, a coalition of trade groups representing a dozen industries went to court to stop the plan, claiming that the state had overstepped the bounds of its authority. (Associated Press)
A coalition of businesses wants a court to block Oregon’s plan to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Oregon Public Broadcasting reports the state’s new Climate Action Plan administrative rules, passed in December, target a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from transportation fuels and natural gas by 2050.

In a petition for judicial review filed Friday, 12 industry trade groups say the rules “hold fuel suppliers directly accountable” for the state’s greenhouse gas emissions.
The groups in this coalition represent a large swath of all of the employers in Oregon, including farmers, ranchers, loggers, fuel suppliers, and even retail business groups. It’s a disparate collection, but they all share one thing in common. If they are forced to comply with these new rules, their costs will rise dramatically and many will likely need to start laying off workers.

They voted poorly.

Vicky Taft at PJ Media, Armed Portland Antifa Pick Fight With Violent Biker Gang Then Blame POLICE When Things Get Violent

Gunfire erupted when violent Antifa militants appear to have picked a fight with a notorious Portland, Ore. area biker gang.

Antifa lost.

At least one person ended up dead and five others were injured in Portland Saturday night.

Portland Police are still sorting things out, but what we know is that police were called on Saturday night shortly after 8 p.m to a disturbance that quickly escalated into gunfire.

Portland Police said, “this incident started with a confrontation between an armed homeowner and armed protesters.”

As Portland Police Public Information Officer Lt. Nathan Sheppard attempted to update the media on the shooting melee in Northeast Portland, two known Antifa militants took over the news conference, commandeered the microphones, and began blaming the police for failing to do their jobs to protect them.

According to Antifa protesters who took over the presser, identified by the Post Millennial as “Hailley Nolan and Dustin Ferreira,” the previous night their comrades had gone to confront members of notorious Portland area biker gang the Gypsy Jokers. Police say at least one of the Antifa militants was armed (which they usually are).

Nolan, who appeared to have trouble breathing, said it was the Portland Police Bureau’s fault when a woman died in the shooting melee and five others were wounded.

“They are sending Gypsy Jokers to kidnap us,” she breathlessly announced. She pointed to Lt. Sheppard and accused the police of encouraging the violence against Antifa, saying “they are sanctioning this violence against us. We are dying. We are trying to peacefully protest and they are killing us. And I want to know if any of you care. I want to know if Ted Wheeler cares.” See the video below.

She indicated why they took over the news conference by admitting “we are not going to let them capture the narrative and lie,” as she pointed to the police.

We can understand why. When you’re Antifa and you pick a fight with a biker gang, Antifa looks pretty dumb.

After Antifa succeeds in completely defunding and demoralizing the police in Portland, maybe the Gypsy Jokers will step into the role. It would be what Portland deserves.  They voted poorly.

Maryland County That Removed Police from Schools Asks Them To Return Indefinitely

After defunding school police programs last year, Maryland's Montgomery County is asking police to maintain a presence in school buildings indefinitely due to safety concerns, the school district told the Washington Free Beacon.

Following the county's first school shooting in history late last month, in which a 15-year-old boy was shot by a classmate, the district asked police into the schools for a week. That week was up on February 1, but Montgomery County Public Schools has asked police to continue to monitor schools for the foreseeable future. A spokesman for the school district said "a date is not yet set" to remove police from schools.

"Our police partners are extending their presence on high school campuses," Montgomery County Public Schools director of communications Chris Cram told the Free Beacon on Wednesday. "At the same time an extensive workgroup has begun the work to ensure safe and equitable schools in MCPS. This work includes developing a vision for safety, security, and well-being right through to ensuring incident command structure during crisis is ready for appropriate response."

The county in March 2021 decided to strip funding from its decades-old School Resource Officer program after pressure from activists who pointed to a disproportionate number of black students arrested in the school district. Like many other Democrat-run jurisdictions that defunded police programs, Montgomery County is realizing that police presence in schools makes schools more safe. Montgomery superintendent Monifa McKnight announced in a Jan. 24 press briefing after the shooting that the district would reevaluate what a police presence "needs to look like" in the future. McKnight said the district did not plan to reinstate the School Resource Officer program.

Police were unable to respond to the shooting at Magruder High School until the injured victim was found in a school building. Two hours after officers arrived at the school, they found the shooter sitting in the classroom with a loaded gun.

As Churchill once commented on Americans, "The United States can always be relied upon to do the right thing — having first exhausted all possible alternatives."

Election: Crying Capitol Cop Joins CNN

A Quick Hit from Ace, Michael Fanone, the Capitol Police officer who spent so very much time on CNN talking about the "insurrection," has, as predicted, resigned from his job to take a job with... CNN, the Child Nookie Network.

We need to talk about this issue seriously: We now have a regime in which anyone who acts as a useful political actor for the Democrat Party -- even a criminal one, as in the case of James Comey, Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, James Clapper, or John Brennan -- is 100% guaranteed a high paying job on CNN or MSNBC.

The media is a serious corrupting force and they're increasingly brazen about it. They might as well straight-up make the promise: Help the Democrat Party win an election and we'll give you a $200,000 contributor contract.

Robert Spencer, Washington Post, Leftist Generals Stoke Hysteria About a 2024 ‘Insurrection’  . 'Wold Howling' at Am Think reports it as Three Retired Generals Loudly Demand A Military Coup In 2024.

. . . the Three utter a sentence I never expected to come out of the mouths of our military leadership: “[T]he military cannot wait for elected officials to act....”

That’s a stunning statement from anyone who understands our military history and our Constitution. The single most basic rule of our military is that it is wholly and completely under civilian control. So, what would the Three have the military do unilaterally?

Among other things, they argue that the military should undertake “intensive intelligence work” at every military base to “remove” those people they define as potential mutineers—i.e., Trump voters. This would be the U.S. military’s first ideological purge, one consistent with the old Soviet Union. Maybe Milley and Austin will install “political officers” in each unit.
