Beach Report 12/8/24

We have shockingly warm weather for Dec. After days of chill and blowing, today was 60 F, with a light southwest wind that leaves the beach almost entirely untouched.
The tide was low, but fossil hunting hard, I had 11 teeth, and some miscellaneous stuff. None of it was really worthy of posting on the internet.

A Bald Eagle sitting on the green marker of Flag Harbor. Excuse the colors, it's a lousy cell phone picture, but I discovered by accident that one of the filters made the white head stand out.
I did find something notable. A broken bottle, only slightly wore, with HI on one edge and NE on the other, and labeled 9 fluid ounces. I guessed immediately it was a NEHI soda bottle, and a quick search on the net shows they made bottles in this style in 7 and 9 ounces from the late 20's through the early 50s.  If it had been an intact bottle it might have been worth a few bucks.

BIS, F3 Driver Sophia Flörsch Takes a Shot at $500M Superstar Lewis Hamilton: “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is”

Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton knows how to raise eyebrows both on and off the track. He recently raised the issue of diversity in motorsport and said he would like to set up an F1 team that would have a diversity policy.

Sophia Flörsch, an F3 driver, didn’t shy away from publicly calling out Hamilton and challenged him to follow through on his words with actions. And that created a lot of backlash.

In a recent interview, Hamilton expressed his dream of having a team promoting diversity from the start. With president-elect Donald Trump joining forces with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. during the election and the former selecting the latter to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it makes sense that Bush would be all in on Make America Healthy Again.

Flotsam and Jetsam - Syria Falls

And the world shrugs. [M]ega churches understand that belonging precedes belief. If you show up at one of these churches, they don’t start off peppering you with questions about whether you’ve accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. They don’t quiz you on the Bible. They invite you in, introduce you around, give you something to eat, tell you all about the activities and groups you can be a part of from the young adult social club to the ballroom dance group to the men’s choir which for those of you not familiar that’s where they put folks whose voices aren’t quite good enough to be in the main choir.... The point is megachurches are built around ‘let’s get you if here, doing stuff, meeting people, and showing you how you can participate and be active.’ It is about agency and relationships, it is not about theology or handouts. And they’re trying to create a big tent where lots of different people can feel comfortable. Once that happens, then they can have a deeper conversation about faith in a way that folks aren’t spooked by....
The ideas are creepy and offputting, so hold off on the ideas and give people a place to sing and dance and socialize.

Ivanka Trump is one of Miami's biggest socialites. A photo shared by Myles praised Ivanka and thanked her for attending the opening. "Always bringing the best energy and great vibes," he wrote over the image. Ivanka reshared the image and added a message of her own. "Congratulations on the opening of The Palm Tree Club in Miami," she wrote.

12 of the 15 students accused of
entrapping and beating a gay man
The Annapolis Crapitol Gazette reports Hate crime charges dropped against majority of Salisbury University students

The majority of Salisbury University students accused of entrapping and beating a gay man off campus no longer face hate crime or felony assault charges, according to the Maryland Judiciary.

After several court hearings Thursday, 12 of the 15 students implicated in the alleged attack, which was recorded on video, are charged with second-degree assault, a broad misdemeanor, and most are accused of false imprisonment.

The three fraternity members still being prosecuted for a hate crime are from Anne Arundel County:
  • Zachary Leinemann, 18, of Crofton
  • Elijah Johnson, 19, of Crofton
  • Logan Clark, 19, of Severna Park
Clark is the only defendant still facing a felony assault charge, court records show, while at least two others had more than 50 charges dropped Thursday.

In a statement, the Wicomico County State’s Attorney’s Office said it had “reviewed the evidence gathered during the course of the investigation and [had] charged as appropriate in light of that evidence,” declining to comment further.

As of Friday, just Leinemann and Johnson’s cases have been elevated to the county’s circuit court. Most of the defendants are scheduled for district court trials in late January.

It's interesting that a racially diverse group of students found it a good idea to beat a gay guy.

Rule 5 Saturday - Lauren Drain

This week's Rule 5 winner answers the question I know you've been dying to know, what do you do after the you've been kicked out of the Westboro Baptist Church for non-compliance?
Lauren Drain (born December 31, 1985) is an American nurse and former member of the Westboro Baptist Church who wrote the 2013 book Banished, which chronicles her experiences and eventual banishment from the church.

I am Lauren Drain
I have held full-time jobs in healthcare since the age of 16, and have been a cardiac registered nurse for over 8 years - 5 of which I spent working full-time night shifts, while also working a second nursing job per-diem. I have experience in an intermediate ICU setting (the ICU step-down), and have been a charge nurse for the last several years while I worked every floor of the hospital. I can help run a code, teach a patient about their medications, and work life-sustaining equipment. I am not "just a model."
I never set out to be a "fitness model" – in fact that was never my intention. About three years ago, I let the fall and holiday seasons get the best of me. I was unhappy with what I saw in the mirror and I felt even worse, so I decided to make a change for the better. I finished my first Paleo challenge with motivating results that led me to research aesthetic competition shows (lots of YouTube asking around). Finally, I decided to bite the bullet and signed up for my first bikini show. I got a coach and trained my butt off for 14 weeks straight before I stepped onstage, and it was far from easy. At the time, I was working 13-hour night shifts at one hospital, and per-diem at another to make up the cost of the show and coaching. By the time I stepped on stage, I was an anxious/excited/inexperienced mess – who placed 9th out of 30+ girls in my first competition.

I can tell she never skips leg day.

Sonobuoys Beating Blue-green Algae

A sonicator buoy blocks algae in Hunting Creek Lake
Bay News, Algae-Fighting Robots Tested at Bay-Region Swimming Holes

New anti-algal bloom technology being tested in Maryland has implications for the whole Chesapeake Bay region. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources say the so-called “robots”, buoys equipped with ultrasonic transmitters, use the power of sound to disrupt harmful algal blooms before they form.

On Labor Day weekend in 2023, the Cunningham Falls State Park swimming hole, Hunting Creek Lake, was forced to shut down for all swimming because of a cyanobacteria bloom. This type of algae can be harmful to people and animals in high concentrations.

“That’s what prompted us to push to get these buoys,” says Ranger Mark Spurrier. “We want to control it the best we can.”

This June, the state park in Frederick County installed two new buoys with “sonicators” into the water, then waited to see if they worked. It appears they are working. There is usually a notable cyanobacteria bloom in the fall, but there haven’t been any harmful blooms this year at Hunting Creek Lake.

The sonicators work by putting a low-power, ultrasonic pulse into the top layer of the water that receives sunlight. The ultrasonic pulse creates a pressure barrier that blocks cyanobacteria from coming up to photosynthesize near the surface.

The buoys are monitored remotely and the ultrasonic waves can be changed based on current water quality trends and which algae species is present.

The sonicator buoys also proved successful in the swimming hole at Camp Todd, a Girl Scout camp in Caroline County just outside the Choptank River. Before it was put into place, scientists from DNR and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science’s Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology confirmed the sonicators wouldn’t be harmful to fish. They operate on a frequency comparable to fishfinders. The buoys cost just over $50,000 each.
Cool! I'd never heard of using sonic suppression of cyanobacteria!

But in what world is a buoy a robot?
