Flotsam and Jetsam - Syria Falls

And the world shrugs. Late yesterday, news came that the rebels in Syria had taken Bagdad and the 50 year tyranny of the Assad family had been toppled as the ruler Bashar al-Assad had taken off for locations unknown, presumably Russia, or perhaps Iran, his allies. Syria has been a suppurating sore on the cancer ridden patient that is the mid-east. He will not be missed, except by maybe Anna Wintour, but it's dubious that the regime that replace him will be an improvement. William Strook, Saturday Updates "Okay let's see what's happening in Syria...this is bad. Israel Radar has an excellent summation. We admit in the short term the fall of Assad would be good for Israel, as it cuts the major ratline from Hezbollah to Iran. In the long term though, the seizure of Syria by an amalgamation of rebel groups led by ex ISIS/AQ and supported by the Turks is bad. Syria will(?) fall apart. Its large Christian community will be annihilated ... This is bad. What's Erdogan's game? We don't know." Matt Vespa at TownHall, hears Reports: Plane Carrying Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Reportedly Disappears. At Insty, REPORT: Syrian rebels claim Assad regime has fallen after entering Damascus and Syrian government appears to have fallen in stunning end to 50-year rule of Assad family. Althouse, "Syrian rebels topple President Assad, his whereabouts unknown." "Speaking of "whereabouts unknown"... where, if anywhere, is our President, the President of the United States? Is Biden there at all? Or is Trump already the acting President? No one stopped him from looking like the President yesterday at the French festivities. If Trump is the relevant President, we already know his ostensible position on Syria: "THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT."" Bob Spencer at PJM, hears the Biden White House Isn’t Blaming Trump for His Pardon of Hunter. It’s Blaming This Guy Instead, Jim Clyburn. At OTP, White House On Pardons: ‘More To Come’. Of course. Outgoing White Houses always hand out a wad of pardons, but will there be a large contingent of clearly political, preemptive pardons? Doing so would be a tacit admission that the various prosecutions of Trump and his allies were political. At Reason, After Hunter's Pardon, Joe Biden Should Support De-Weaponizing Government Power, "Maybe we can all agree that government officials shouldn’t target political enemies." Peter Navarro to Newsmax: Blanket Pardons Would Be Bad for Democracy. Navarro was jailed for defying a subpoena from the J6 committee. Pop Times hears Trump Is Going To “Beat You To Death With The Bat You Just Handed” Him: Chris Cuomo. "Biden’s announcement of the pardon on Sunday included an acknowledgment that the Department of Justice (DOJ) had engaged in politically motivated actions. Trump’s attorney cited this admission in a motion filed Tuesday seeking to dismiss his New York case. “It took exactly one day for Trump and the funky bunch to seize on the gift that Biden just gave him,” Cuomo said during his broadcast." Althouse highlights Succinct perfection in hypocrisy.
At Fox, Biden EPA makes first-ever climate change arrest "The EPA increased the number of penalties for polluters this fiscal year." "The AIM Act led to the arrest of Michael Hart, of San Diego, in March on charges related to "smuggling potent greenhouse gases," highlighted in the EPA report. An idea thrown out by Barack Obama, speaking on "the power of pluralism," at the Democracy Forum in Chicago last Thursday:
[M]ega churches understand that belonging precedes belief. If you show up at one of these churches, they don’t start off peppering you with questions about whether you’ve accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. They don’t quiz you on the Bible. They invite you in, introduce you around, give you something to eat, tell you all about the activities and groups you can be a part of from the young adult social club to the ballroom dance group to the men’s choir which for those of you not familiar that’s where they put folks whose voices aren’t quite good enough to be in the main choir.... The point is megachurches are built around ‘let’s get you if here, doing stuff, meeting people, and showing you how you can participate and be active.’ It is about agency and relationships, it is not about theology or handouts. And they’re trying to create a big tent where lots of different people can feel comfortable. Once that happens, then they can have a deeper conversation about faith in a way that folks aren’t spooked by....
The ideas are creepy and offputting, so hold off on the ideas and give people a place to sing and dance and socialize.

Insty says SAME: MTG wants ‘murder charges’ for officer who shot Ashli Babbitt. “Testimony and video from the day showed Babbitt being pushed through a door window into the House Speaker’s Lobby behind the House floor when, without warning, she was shot by Byrd. The Monday Morning Stimulus

It was 2018, two years before the tidal wave of diversity initiatives unleashed by George Floyd’s death, and Starbucks needed a public relations win. The coffee giant was under fire after an employee at one of its stores mistakenly called the police on two black men, prompting the company to announce a "multiphase effort" to become "more diverse, equitable, and inclusive."

Part of that effort was a series of "civil rights assessments" conducted by Covington & Burling, one of the top white shoe law firms in Washington, D.C., under the leadership of former attorney general Eric Holder, a senior counsel at the firm.

Holder—who has charged as much as $2,295 an hour for such work—issued a final report in 2021 that outlined the steps Starbucks had taken to promote "equity." They included tying executive pay to diversity targets, setting spending goals for "diverse suppliers," and launching a mentorship program for "BIPOC" employees, which Holder pressed the company to expand. Each initiative, he wrote, demonstrated the coffee maker’s "commitment to civil rights and equal treatment."

But one year later, Starbucks was fending off a civil rights lawsuit over precisely the programs Holder had blessed. The lawsuit, which is still ongoing and was filed last August by the National Center for Public Policy Research, a conservative nonprofit that is also a Starbucks shareholder, argued that the programs violate non-discrimination laws as well as the company’s fiduciary duties. Such claims may have come as a surprise to Starbucks executives: At no point did Holder’s report address the legality of the policies at issue.

CNN Freaks over Polling, GOP Looks Good in the States, Stagflation Looms, 2000 Mules Rivets, Anti-Abortion Clinic Burns

Mike LaChance at LI reports CNN freaking out as a CNN Poll Taken After SCOTUS Leak Deflates Dem Hopes for 2022 Midterms. From "Madison anti-abortion headquarters hit by apparent Molotov cocktail, vandalism, graffiti" (Wisconsin State Journal). The terrorists left graffiti on the outside of the building — the words "

If abortions aren't safe then you aren't either" and the anarchy symbol alongside the number 1312 (which stands for the slogan "All Cops Are Bastards").

And wonders about the papers word choice: What's the difference?

What is the word "vandalism" doing in that headline, which specifies 2 things — Molotov cocktail and graffiti? Is there some additional thing that was done that justifies putting "vandalism" in that sequence of words? A firebombing is more than vandalism, and the graffiti says "If abortions aren’t safe then you aren’t either," so there was a specific intent to terrorize people over their political beliefs and actions.

I blogged that article last night — here — and I didn't say much, but I did shift to the word "terrorists" after quoting the newspaper's word "vandalism." (I wrote "The terrorists left graffiti....")

To say "vandalism" is to minimize the seriousness of this crime. Ironically, it also elevates the target, since the older meanings of "vandalism" highlight the destruction of things that are "beautiful, venerable, or worthy of preservation" (OED).

The Christmas Eve Morning Election News Dump

Where we take the news to get rid of it. At the NYT, cited at Haut Hair, Lawrence Tribe tries to make a case; Will Trump get away with inciting an insurrection? Insty instantly points out the absurdity that ISN’T IT AWKWARD TO CHARGE SOMEONE WITH INCITING AN INSURRECTION WHEN NO ONE HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH INSURRECTION? "These people will provoke a real insurrection with their behavior if they aren’t restrained by more sensible people. And the way the Democrats are doing in the polls, we may reach the point where a majority of Americans would be okay with that." and adds UPDATE: Roger Kimball: Jan. 6 is looking like a ‘Fedsurrection.’ And by way of the Wombat's In The Mailbox: 12.23.21, Josh Blackmun at Volokh, Garland's Choice: Should He Indict Donald Trump for Inciting an Insurrection?

Unlike Tribe, I am not surprised that Garland is staying out of this mess. Even if Tribe is right on the law, prosecutorial discretion would weigh heavily against bringing this charge before the 2024 election. The partisan optics would be like the Russiagate, times a billion.

Indeed, if any of the Section 3 litigation makes it to the Supreme Court, I think the Department of Justice would have to decline to take a position on whether Trump is disqualified from the presidency. The conflict of interest is apparent: President Biden's administration would be litigating to knock his opponent out in Court. For those curious, Mark Elias is already predicting litigation with respect to members of Congress,

At Am Spec, Jeffrey Lord reports Scott Perry Fights Back Says he will refuse to appear before January 6 Committee. Fox, Trump asks Supreme Court to block release of some records to Jan. 6 committee, "Trump's attorneys call the congressional request 'untethered from any valid legislative purpose'" It's also an illegally constituted committee with a habit of leaking doctored "evidence." Alexsandar Markovic, at Am Think thinks Here There Be Monsters

On January 6, none of the protestors was armed, nobody burned down a building, and the only violence was against the protestors, committed by the D.C. police. The sole fatality was an unarmed protestor at the hands of a capitol security officer. Instigators and provocateurs abounded in the crowd, but none was subsequently charged. In fact, their names were thereafter purged from public records. Elected officials blocks away from the event stated they were in fear of their lives. The anti-gun Speaker of the House’s request of the military to set up crew-served machine guns was declined. Biden called it the most serious threat to American democracy since the Civil War, a characterization repeated daily by the Left. Over 400 protestors were arrested, and most remain detained without bail in deplorable conditions. Those few who have been charged were not charged with insurrection or anything like it. Another protest occurred in D.C. since then, in which a protestor attacked a U.S. senator’s door with an ax. The Antifa protestor was out on bail without delay despite committing worse violations than the January 6 protestors, ultimately received probation, and his ax was returned to him.

“The Maryland General Assembly created these illegal maps in dark backrooms and now they will be forced to defend them in a court of law,” Fair Maps Maryland spokesman Doug Mayer said. “These Marylanders are victims of electoral corruption and blatant voter suppression, and this lawsuit is their only remedy to undo the damage the General Assembly has perpetuated against them for decades.”

Republican Gov. Larry Hogan created an independent commission which drew more balanced maps, according to independent expert analyses, but the legislature opted instead to vote for the gerrymandered maps granting Democrats an advantage.
Contrast to, from Twitchy, Eric Holder and Marc Elias get dropped on their heads over lawsuit challenging Arizona’s new congressional districts
Dave Wasserman @Redistrict

ICYMI, both *Dem* commissioners voted to approve the 5-4 Biden map in Arizona your org just filed a hopeless lawsuit against. Did they engage in “egregious conduct?” Lol this is getting out of hand.
Eric Holder @EricHolder

This is just plain stupid. We file our suits in places where there is egregious conduct - and where we can win. Tell the would be trial lawyers - now standing on the sidelines - to shut the hell up. twitter.com/redistrict/sta…
I'm pretty sure Eric Holder isn't filing in MD. Either Gerrymander, or don't, but the rules have to apply across the board.

Some More Saturday Morning Russiagate

On the matter of Gen. Michael Flynn, George Neumayr at Am Spec calls it The Ruling Class Railroading of Michael Flynn. They have seven ways from Sunday to hurt you. Bruce Thornton at Frongt Page says No Justice, No Freedom. Capt. Ed at Hot Air reports Flynn Attorney: “Mystified By The Entire Thing” On Sullivan Orders, But What’s Next?. I doubt Sidney Powell is ever really mystified. EBL adds Judge Sullivan Can't Let It Go 👨🏽‍⚖️⚖️🤯. Of course, WaPoo comes to the judges defense in Flynn judge one of federal bench's most probing skeptics of Justice Department misconduct, legal observers say (via LMT). Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln? Breitbart digs into Sullivan's friendly judge and finds Judge Opposing Flynn Ruled in 2012: ‘Abuse of Discretion’ Not to Allow Dismissal

Expecting consistency from a federal judge? Think again. According to Margot Cleveland at Da Fed, The Constitution Requires Judge Emmet Sullivan’s Lawless Amicus Order Against Michael Flynn Be Overturned. Don't believe her? Well how about Jonathon Turley, who called it ‘Unnerving’: Impeachment Witness Jonathan Turley Says Flynn Judge Could Be ‘Committing Reversible Errors’, which I guess is less serious than an irreversible error.
And getting back to the facts behind the trial, Sen. Barrasso says Biden might have leaked Flynn info to WaPo – a crime punishable by 10 years in jail (News Thud).Well he is on the list of 8 who unmasked Flynn at the right time. Fox, Trey Gowdy: Leaking Flynn's name to media is a '10-year felony,' how's the investigation going?. It does seem to be heating up.

Fox again, Trump wants FBI’s original ‘302’ report on Flynn case, says former adviser 'persecuted'. It's amazing how well that item has been buried in the FBI's computer system designed to keep and track documents. Sundance at CTH, UPDATE: Recently Released Comey Testimony Provides Further Evidence of The Original Flynn 302 Written by Pientka Before It Mysteriously Went Missing…. Maybe it was like, wiped with a clothe or something. Sundance also has a theory that Comey Briefed Clapper on Flynn-Kislyak Call as a Result of Pen Register on Flynn Phone…. Kind of down in the weeds. We know they had it in for Flynn, and they spied.

Switching to the larger issue of unmaskings, Peder Zane at RCP writes of Investigative Issues: Situational Media Attitudes Toward 'Unmaskings'. Consider how happy will MSNBCBSBCNPR be when Trump opens the files on Hillary, Biden and Obama to name a few of many possibilities. Hannity, CLAPPER on CNN: It’s ‘Routine, Legitimate, Appropriate’ to Unmask American Citizens. and former Bushy conservative Patterico, “Unmasking” Is Routine, and the Effort to Portray It As Sinister Is Very Stupid Propaganda. Well, yes, it's pretty common, but it's use on political oppenents without extreme care must be prevented. ObamaBiden wallowed in it.

Speaking of Clapper, News Thud reminds us After Lying For 3 Years James Clapper Finally Tells Truth: ‘No Evidence of Russian Trump Collusion”  and CNS News, Clapper Says He'd Be 'Happy' to Testify--'After I've Been Vaccinated for COVID-19'. Just put on your mask, you'll be fine. And Clapper's evil twin? Brennan: Rand Paul’s ‘Inane Comments’ Show He Has No Understanding of Intelligence Profession. Oh, understands it just fine, he just knows you abused it.

"Adam Mill" at AmGreat, Transcript Reveals Russia Collusion Hoax Cover-up
Is it possible that the DNC and CrowdStrike would falsely accuse the Russians of cyberespionage? The answer is yes, and there have been not one, but two subsequent cases in which the Russians were falsely accused of hacking.
Yes, and wait, there's more to come according to Thomas Lifeson at AmThink The other secrets inside Grenell’s satchel are the key to the biggest political scandal in US history
That satchel that Acting DNI Ric Grenell personally delivered to the Department of Justice on May 7, 2020 was far too big for just a list of the 39 Obama administration officials, including his chief of staff and ambassador to Italy. Those higher ups have been exposed as requesting the unmasking of General Flynn. But there must have been a lot more inside, and that material was voluminous to require a briefcase-sized container, and that is the key to exposing the real extent of the spy operation that President Obama carried out on his political enemies, and the unmasking of General Michael Fynn is just the tip of the iceberg.
Well, maybe, but never discount the fluffiness of government paperwork.

Insty, still waiting for Lindsey 3.0. OKAY, GUYS. IT’S OBVIOUS SOMEONE ON THE LEFT FOUND MCCAIN’S STASH OF BLACKMAIL MATERIAL ON LINDSEY GRAHAM. HE’S BEING CONTROLLED AGAIN. LET’S FIND IT AND BURN IT. I LIKE THE GRAHAMINATOR BETTER: Graham Throws Cold Water on Trump’s Call For Obama to Testify in ObamaGate Hearing, but t Sara Carter's place, Graham Announces Sen. Judiciary Crossfire Hurricane Hearings Will Start Next Month, and at John Solomon's JTN, House Republicans request unredacted State documents regarding Burisma Holdings, Hunter Biden. Ankle biters. Reason worries that Senate Renews FBI Surveillance Powers With Modest Reforms - An effort by Sen. Rand Paul to forbid warrantless investigation of citizens was soundly defeated while at Da Fed Mollie Hemingway warns in a Memo To Mitch McConnell: You Won’t Get Judges If You Don’t Hold Resistance Accountable For Russia Hoax

From Herr Professor Jacobsen at LI, #Obamagate is simply Obama being Obama, bringing Chicago dirty politics to the nation. On the other side, Susan Glasser at the New Yorker thinks “Obamagate” Is Niche Programming for Trump Superfans. It certainly won't get the attention Watergate did, but the crime is similar (espionage on political oppenents) and the cover up (remember, "it's not the crime, it's the cover up"?) involves massive interventions by the DOJ and FBI. Paul Bedard at WaEx, Wingman' Eric Holder orchestrated 'Obamagate,' says successor attorney general.

Howie Carr at the BH, Sleepy Joe Biden dazed and confused when it comes to Obamagate. But he could have just put the period after confused.

Russiagate - Flynn, The Fix Was In

As the title implies, most of today's chapter will be devoted to the Flynn case. First, to get  it out of the way, there is a continued pouring of outrage from the first release this week, showing how Priestap, McCabe, Strzok, Sally Yates and James Comey plotted to bring down Gen. Flynn. John Dietrich at AmThink, General Flynn vs. The Deep State, Julie Kelly at AmGreat, The Betrayal of General Mike Flynn,  Matt Palumbo, Newly Unsealed Flynn Documents Prove Trump Was Right to Fire Sally Yates, Capt. Ed at Hot Air, FBI Notes: Hey, How Do We Trap Flynn In A Lie And Get Him Fired — Or Prosecuted?, and  Trump To Acosta: I Sure Hope CNN Will Cover What These FBI “Dirty Cops” Did To Flynn.  From atop Da Hill, Trump: CNN, others 'should pay a big price for what they have purposely done' to Flynn.  From "Tyler Durnden" at Zero Hedge, "Something Far More Troubling Here" - Trump Rages At Docs Exposing FBI Entrapment Of General Flynn. Sundance at CTH, President Trump Oval Office Remarks About New Discoveries in Flynn Case…. and from Fox, Trump says he would 'certainly consider' bringing Flynn back into his administration. Nevertheless, WaPoo found three anonymous experts who claim FBI notes on Michael Flynn unlikely to convince judge he was entrapped. They might be right.

The Flynn saga inspired Smitty at The Other McCain to wax poetic in Flynn Won Twitter.
An interesting twitter thread from Kimberly Strassel starting here. To which, Insty replies, THE FBI IS A CESSPIT OF CORRUPTION AND SHOULD BE ABOLISHED. Scott Shackford at Reason, Much of the FBI's Treatment of Mike Flynn Was Business as Usual, and That's the Scandal. David Reboi is Waiting for a single honest NeverTrumper to finally apologize for cheering on the destruction of Michael Flynn and calling him a traitor for several years. Tom Maguire at JOM asks at good question, The Deep State In Action "So basically the interview was exactly the set-up it looked like. Interesting news to me, at least from Sean Davis at Da Fed, Flynn’s Original Defense Team Repeatedly Rejected Congressional Immunity Overtures
After Flynn pleaded guilty to making false statements to federal investigators, representatives of multiple congressional committees with oversight responsibility for national security matters asked Flynn’s lawyers if Flynn would testify before Congress in exchange for a congressional grant of immunity. Robert Kelner, Flynn’s attorney at the time, immediately dismissed the overtures, sources told The Federalist. During one conversation, Kelner allegedly responded that in situations like the one facing Flynn, the prosecution essentially “owns” the defendant and added that he would be unlikely to pursue congressional testimony without the approval of former Spygate Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s office.

Flynn was not told of these immunity conversations with congressional officials before they were rejected on his behalf, a source familiar with Flynn’s case told The Federalist. The former White House national security adviser and three-star Army general fired Kelner and the rest of his defense team at the Covington law firm in June 2019 and is currently trying to withdraw his guilty plea.
It appears Gen. Flynn's original team, the firm that included Eric Holder among it's partners, was actually working for the other team.

From Sundance, Jim Jordan Discusses Newly Release FBI Documents in Case Against Michael Flynn…

And now, onto the news alluded to by Ace above.
Gregg Re at Fox, Strzok stopped FBI from ending Flynn probe despite lack of 'derogatory' evidence, unsealed documents reveal
Chuck Ross at Da Caller, FBI Planned To Close Michael Flynn Investigation, And Then Peter Strzok Intervened. Ace, Documents: FBI Found No Derogatory Information On Michael Flynn and Ordered the Investigation Into Him to Be Closed. Then Trump Deranged Political Operative Peter Strzok Ordered the Case Be Reopened to Find Anything. "Necks need to be stretched."Including an appearance of Stefan Halper, who tried to set Flynn up to appear a Russian stooge. Twitchy, Newly unsealed texts show Peter Strzok intervened to keep Michael Flynn’s case open after FBI declared case ‘no longer viable’ after intervention of James Comey.
Old new verified by News Thud,  New Texts Show Peter Strzok, Lisa Page Altered Flynn Interview Notes
Per Newsmax, yet another bombshell development emerged Thursday in the case of former National Security Adviser Gen. Michael Flynn: the release of additional exculpatory evidence FBI officials had withheld from the courts and the defense for three years.

Crucially, this includes evidence that the Bureau’s official “302 report” filed by the lead agent who interviewed Flynn was edited multiple times, including by an official who never participated in the interview.

Thursday’s revelations come on top of yesterday’s disclosures indicating an apparent attempt by FBI officials to trap Flynn into committing a criminal offense during an interview.

The new revelation could prove even more significant: In addition to the apparently calculated effort to get Flynn to commit perjury or obstruction, top FBI figures, including FBI Deputy Assistant Director Peter Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page, repeatedly altered the “302 report” that was filed after the Flynn interview.
And saving the most for last, sundance claims evidence Obama White House ordered continued Flynn persecution, Additional 11-Pages of FBI Documents Unsealed – Biggest Surprise: President Obama Implicated…
Which leads to a 2:22pm message where Peter Strzok notes “7th floor involved”. That means FBI Director James Comey is now engaged on the issue.

James Comey being actively engaged is important. Previously Comey said he was unaware of what they were doing… Additionally this text and activity is January 4, 2017.

The very next day, January 5th, James Comey goes to the White House for a meeting with President Obama and Vice-President Biden.

January 5th is the White House meeting where National Security Advisor Susan Rice, FBI Director James Comey (Crossfire Hurricane), and Deputy AG Sally Yates (Flynn FARA) are talking to President Obama about the status of the Flynn FBI investigation and President Obama says “by the book”.

  • 1/4/17 – FBI wants to close investigation.
  • 1/4/17 – Peter Strzok says no wait… I have a plan.
  • 1/4/17 – James Comey involved. “7th Floor Involved”
  • 1/5/17 – James Comey goes to White House.
  • 1/5/17 – President Obama says: OK, but make sure “by the book”. [Susan Rice Memo]
Skipping ahead to the early days of the Trump administration Breitbart reports Joe Biden Was at Meeting Where James Comey Was Told to Brief Trump on Steele Dossier. Trump being briefed was the "newshook" that allowed the Steele Dossier, already in wide circulation among the media and politicians, to be made public. Curiously 53% of American Voters Still Believe Fake News that Steele ‘Pee’ Dossier Was Accurate, probably all Democrats, and a smattering of left leaning indies. Chuck Ross at Da Caller again, Steele Gave New Details About Clinton Ally’s Interest In The Dossier
"Strobe Talbott, the former president of the Brookings Institution, contacted him in the months leading up to the 2016 election inquiring about an investigation he was conducting at the time into Trump’s possible ties to Russia, Steele said in a sworn deposition on March 18."
Miscellaneous, at Da Caller, Angelo Codevilla says I Helped Write FISA. Let’s Destroy It. Yup.
