The Eye Has It

Yesterday morning was the post-op check up for my retinal detachment and vitrectomy surgery. A tec ripped off the shield that covered the eye overnight, administered a bank of eye drops, checked the pressure (a bit high), and quickly determined that the vision in that eye still sucked. No surprise, the big bubble of perfluoropropanate is seriously affecting it.

The second eye surgeon called me in, peered in, and declared herself satisfied with the outcome so far. Unlike most of the Drs I encountered in this jeremiad, middle eastern or Asian, she was an American Black woman. She prescribed a fine list of 5 different eye drops and one lotion, to be taken on a complicated and shifting schedule and sent us home with an appointment to be seen again in about 10 days.

I don’t have much pain, just a little in the outside corner of the eye from all the toys the used. The eye is sort of working again and I can see some big things through the bubble. I may be optimistic, but I think I see the big black blob of inactive retina in the right lower corner of my eye receding away from the center of vision which it had engulfed.

I’m still supposed to keep my head down and sleep on my right side for the rest of a week, to keep the bubble pressing the retina against the back of the eye. I can’t use my computer and keep my head down, so I have to use my IPad, which sucks at posting, hence the dearth and quality. According to the internet, the bubble is supposed to be absorbed over the course of 2 months so it will be quite a while before the eye sees whatever will become the new normal. On the bright side, no more floaters in that eye, which was formerly plagued with them.

Totally Humorless

So, yesterday’s post was rushed because we were rushing to the eye doctor because I was seeing flashes of light around a big black hole in my vision in my right eye. The regular eye doc confirmed my tentative diagnosis of a retinal detachment, and set us to the regular retina specialist across the street, who that day was working in Waldorf. After a hectic ride across the river and through the woods, we reached him just a the office was getting ready to close. He confirmed the confirmation, but admitted he was unable to treat it in the office, and referred me to Wilmers Eye Hospital, a branch of John’s Hopkins Hospital in Balmer.

We arrived at Wilmer’s after dark, and I was admitted through the emergency department. I was finally seen by a young eye doctor around midnight, where he reconfirmed the diagnosis, said he was concocting a plan, for a repair the next day. Long story short after many changes in location followed by long waits. A little after noon I was wheeled into the operating room, where I received a vitrectomy (removal of the vitreous humor) and a gas bubble (C3F8!) put in the eye to help hold the retina against the back of the eye.

I’m currently wearing a shield over my eye, and have to visit the surgeon again tomorrow morning to have the shield removed and the procedure’s success evaluated. We’re staying in Balmer overnight to Georgia doesn’t have make the round trip so soon. I’m supposed to to keep my head looking down for some as yet indefinite period to keep the bubble in place.

Since I had a vitrectomy back in 2018 as a result a a complication of a cataract surgery, I am now humorless.

Blogging my be sketchy for a while due to visual limitations.

Maryland, My Maryland

From the Balmer Sun, Maryland sheriffs gain national attention amid push against 287(g) ban

Maryland law enforcement leaders gained some national attention in their fight against a law banning formal agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement this week. Lt. Col. Allen West, the executive director of the national conservative legal nonprofit American Constitutional Rights Union, met with officials in Harford and Carroll counties Monday to discuss his concerns about the constitutionality of the bans.

The visit coincided with recent progress toward legal action against the state law banning 287(g) agreements, which previously allowed local jails to transfer undocumented immigrants directly to ICE. Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler, a Republican who is running for reelection, said that there are “positive indications” of legal action, and the sheriffs will be discussing options at a meeting this week.

“How can they make a law that says that a law enforcement officer cannot enforce a law?” West asked during his meeting with Gahler and Patty Morin, the mother of Bel Air murder victim Rachel Morin, along with other local leaders, at the Harford County Detention Center. “We will make sure that justice is served, and there will be no more Rachel Morins in the United States of America,” he said.

Patty Morin, the mother of Rachel Morin, who was raped and murdered on the Ma and Pa Heritage Trail in Bel Air in 2023, spoke in favor of 287(g) agreements. Morin said her daughter’s killer, Victor Martinez-Hernandez, of El Salvador, entered the country illegally before he killed Rachel.

Democratic leaders have defended the ban. Sen. Angela Alsobrooks called ICE “a murderous organization” and said Maryland is protecting residents from “brutal and unconstitutional policies.” Sen. Chris Van Hollen said the agency is not focused on “the worst of the worst” and that Maryland is within its rights to refuse cooperation.

He'd rather drink with illegal alien human traffickers and wife-beaters than deport them.

Maryland, My Maryland

Well, they did it. At Campus Reform, Resolution condemning U.S.-Israeli intervention in Iran passes Maryland student gov. vote

Student government legislators at the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) have passed a resolution declaring that they stand in solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Members of the Student Government Association (SGA) are elected leaders who represent a given university’s student body.

The move follows President Donald Trump’s strikes on the repressive regime of the Ayatollah Khamenei. Codenamed “Operation Epic Fury,” the United States launched a series of coordinated attacks with the State of Israel on military installations in Iran, leading to the death of Khamenei himself on Feb. 28.

In response, the UMCP student government introduced a resolution condemning both the United States and Israel for these decisive actions. The resolution was sponsored by Zyad Khan and cosponsored by Saad Ijaz, Mohammed Abukhdeir, and Hasan Islam—all students at the university and SGA leaders.

SGA legislators voted to pass the resolution Wednesday evening. According to UMCP campus newspaper The Diamondback, the resolution’s final vote to pass was nearly unanimous: 19-0-1.

In addition to condemning international military action in Iran, student legislators also retroactively sided with Venezuelan drug lord Nicolás Maduro and blasted the U.S. for its decision to carry out an arrest warrant and apprehend the criminal.

Donald Trump should immediately order all federal aid to College Park suspended. I would stop my contributions, if I could.

Blue Catfish Too Good for Dog Food

According to Maryland seafood processors. From the Balmer Sun, Blue catfish bill sparks backlash from Maryland seafood processors

Two Maryland seafood processors said there’s a delicate balancing act in controlling invasive species like blue catfish, and that proposed legislation threatens that balance. They also described what’s been a brutal stretch as bad weather, poor market conditions and new regulations threaten the livelihood of one of the state’s oldest industries.

Amanda Williams of BSA Seafood in Grasonville and Patrick Welsh Jr. of Reliant Fish Company in Jessup were part of a coalition this week that opposed federal legislation linking invasive blue catfish — a species that environmental and agricultural officials say feasts on blue crabs, rockfish and oysters — to pet food processors.

U.S. Rep. Sarah Elfreth, who introduced the Mitigation Action and Watermen Support Act of 2026, or MAWS Act, said there’s “a mutual interest in getting invasive blue catfish out of the Bay.” “That is why for well over a year, my team and I have had meaningful and productive conversations with stakeholders, including over a dozen meetings and calls with seafood processors from across the watershed, to shape this bipartisan legislation into what it is today, with substantial changes over time responsive to the feedback from every corner of this industry,” Elfreth said in a statement to The Baltimore Sun.

Williams said the legislation is well-intentioned, but misses the mark. “We’ve spent years marketing blue catfish as a premium seafood product, and framing it as a pet food ingredient undercuts all of that work,” she said. “We’re also already sending our processing byproduct to a facility that handles rendering, so the idea of bringing in an outside recipient selected subsidized by the government to pay above-market prices for whole fish isn’t innovation, it’s market distortion that puts small processors like us at a real disadvantage.”

She said seafood processors feel like they were left out of key discussions. “We want invasive blue catfish out of the bay as much as anyone — but the path forward needs to work with this industry, not against it,” she said.

Welsh said the MAWS Act leapfrogs the market to pay the fishing industry, but leaves seafood processors behind. “The dogfood people are already getting product from us, so what sense does it make? All you’re gonna do is take that product away from us if the fishermen go directly to the dogfood processors,” he said.

Welsh described a delicate balancing act in fishing what’s essentially become an invasive species. “You want sustainability in that we want this thing to continue. We want to manage it. We want to control it as best we can, so you don’t eradicate it,” he said. He said getting rid of the species entirely would hurt the processing industry, the fishing industry and consumers.

So, now, the goal has shifted to managing Blue Cats as a resource. That's probably for the best; there is effectively zero chance that any control efforts will actually eliminate them from the system; at best we might control the population and mitigate the amount of gamefish and gamefish food they consume.

As for the charge that using them as pet food will somehow degrade the brand, and cause them to be less sought for human use, I ain't worried. Most of our pet food is made from meat that is also used for human consumption, beef, pork, turkey, lamb, tuna, and so on. I\m not turning down a nice piece of Ahi because tuna get used in catfood. There's still plenty Blue Cats to supply both supermarkets and pet food processors. We simply need high enough prices to support the fishery. Flotsam and Jetsam - Did Tucker Set Up the Ayatollahs?

Almost too good to be true. From Sundance at CTH, Tucker Carlson Notes the CIA Monitoring His Communication with Iran Officials for Potential DOJ Referral. Dave Strom at Hat Hair, Did Tucker Carlson Just Get Caught Giving the Iranian Regime Intelligence? At PJM, Matt Margolis hears Tucker Carlson Claims He’s the Subject of Criminal Probe Over Iran and Scott Pinsker hears a New Theory Emerges: Was the Supreme Leader Set up by a Leaker Named… Tucker Carlson? Will Chamberlain @willchamberlain, "If the CIA knew that he was talking to the Iranians, then President Trump would have known that also, when he invited Tucker into the Oval a few days before the strike. Which means Trump may have used Tucker to deceive the Iranians about the likelihood of an impending attack." Quote Tucker Carlson @TuckerCarlson, "When you discover the CIA has been reading your texts in order to frame you for a crime." Wayne Root - Wayne Allyn Root - TV & Radio Host @RealWayneRoot, "The story gets even juicier. The word is Tucker is invited to WH by Trump. President tells him not to worry. We are bluffing. We have no intension of bombing Iran ever again. It's all a bluff to bring Iran to table. Tucker runs back to Mullahs & tells them our plan. CIA is listening to Tucker's call. Got him dead to rights for espionage & treason. But best part of story...Tucker emboldens Mullahs. They have no fear because now they know Trump was bluffing- they got it straight from Tucker who was in Oval Office w/Trump. They let their guard down. Then Trump bombs them & kills them all. The plan worked perfectly. Tucker was used like a fool by Trump. And outed as traitor. If all true, this is one of great military plans of all time. Tucker gave the enemy bad info. He got them killed! Tucker should spend decades in prison for aiding enemy. Irony- he hates Jews so much. He just became a modern day Julius & Ethel Rosenberg! What a "MOTHER TUCKER." Let's see how it plays out. In USA, no one is guilty until court of law says so. Except Democrat scumbags who opened border to destroy USA. They're guilty." Now whether or not this is a crime depends on the circumstances and conditions of the Trump/Tucker meet. It certainly would indicate that you can't trust Tucker with any sensitive information.

KC-10 Driver B-737 Wrangler @MCCCANM, "The “decision” to remove parachutes from the KC-135 was made in 2008, in the wake of the “Great Financial Crisis” (GFC). Adam had to know about it then…we all did. It was controversial at the time. AMC was on a fuel-savings tear, as the pentagon budget was reduced. They published the pamphlet “Birds fly free, AMC doesn’t” & established a review process for how much fuel you landed with. If it was deemed excessive, you were supposed to be counseled. Thankfully the KC-10 community generally scoffed at this. You could carry extra fuel & justify it a number of ways…but if you ran out of fuel due to unforeseen circumstances, you can bet you’d be hammered by leadership…if you survived. The chances of being able to bail out of a KC-135 successfully are low. It had a special escape slide, but even that was iffy. This is not the movies…jumping from a jet kills you as you bounce along the fuselage, getting cut in half by antennas, wing or tail, or ingested by the engines. The KC-10 never carried parachutes. This is not even the first KC-135 crash to happen since parachutes were pulled. All of which Adam knows, he just makes money by outraging you & playing politics." The Road to Hell...

... Is paved with good intentions, as my Dad used to say. At the Balmer Sun, Tests confirm Herbert Run polluted: Critics say UMBC’s $27M restoration project made it worse

Herbert Run flows through Catonsville’s Spring Grove Hospital campus, accumulating a cocktail of bacteria and pollutants from nearby neighborhoods, businesses and the Baltimore Beltway, government testing shows. However, environmentalists argue that the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s $27 million stream restoration and utility upgrade project further endangered parts of the stream and wasted taxpayers’ money.

Herbert Run contains “bacteria, ions, metals, nutrients, pesticides, sediment, stream modifications, and toxicity [selenium],” according to UMBC documents filed before they cut three acres of streambed forest and bulldozed thousands of feet of streambed. The university’s analysis is being used to support the tree clearing and streambed restoration part of the project, which also includes sewer and road improvements.

But retired forester and Catonsville resident William Rees called it unlikely that UMBC’s project will help Herbert Run. “If anything, the extensive grading, tree removal and destruction of the organic layers did much more harm than good,” Rees told The Baltimore Sun. “The only place where the stream restoration work has potential to be beneficial is in the area [around] the bridge, where there was limited forest and organic layers to begin with.”

Rees and other Catonsville residents and representatives decried the project as wasting taxpayer money for cutting older “specimen trees” — with trunks wider than 30 inches — that protected the stream. The contractor, Whiting-Turner, also bulldozed hundreds of saplings planted by the community, with funding from Maryland’s Tree-Mendous program, intended to create a Spring Grove Arboretum.

Independent testing from Baltimore County and the State of Maryland confirmed the university’s stream quality findings. The Maryland Department of the Environment calls that section of Herbert Run “impaired” by e. coli bacteria, suspended solids and habitat alteration. Where trees were cut, Baltimore County’s Department of Environmental Protection previously found “poor biological integrity” and “partially degraded stream habitat.”

Thirty members of his court expressed their outrage at VanDyke writing about "swinging dicks," but not one of them was willing to review a case that involved actual "swinging dicks."
