Tattoo Thursday

She’s a Swiftie for life, now.

Ahead of attending Taylor Swift’s final Eras Tour in Vancouver last night, Brianna “Chickenfry” LaPaglia, 25, revealed her latest tattoo — a nod to the pop star’s song “I Hate It Here” — which cemented her newfound love for Swift.

A clip with the aforementioned song playing showed LaPaglia on her stomach as tattoo artist Taylor Menzies applied the ink, revealing the final creation: a skull with roses peeking out.

Her new arm art nods to Swift’s lyrics, “I hate it here, so I will go to secret gardens in my mind.”

Maryland, My Maryland

Balmer Sun, Glen Burnie man accused of burning Donald Trump’s name into road with flamethrower, authorities say

A Glen Burnie man was charged with a felony Sunday after authorities reviewed a TikTok video “clearly” showing him burning the words “TRUMP” and “USA” onto the road outside his home, according to the Maryland Judiciary.

An investigator with the Anne Arundel County Fire Marshal Division wrote in charging documents that Craig Philip McQuin used an illegal flamethrower to spell out the two words.

Maryland law considers flamethrowers “destructive devices,” akin to a bomb, and bans their possession and use in the state.

Maryland bans flamethrower? Who knew. I guess I'll have to take mine for a "boat ride".

Forget it Jake, It's Baltimore

The Balmer Sun, Luigi Mangione case: ‘Deny Defend Depose’ banner appears over I-83 in Baltimore

A banner referencing the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO has appeared in Baltimore over southbound Interstate 83. Luigi Mangione, a Maryland native who attended Baltimore’s Gilman School, has been arrested and charged in connection with the New York City shooting.

Hanging on an overpass just south of Cold Spring Lane, the banner reads, “Deny Defend Depose” and Health Care 4 All.” “Deny,” defend” and “depose” were the words found emblazoned on the ammunition used to gun down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Those three words are often used to describe a strategy by large insurance companies to avoid paying claims. “Delay, Defend, Deny: Why insurance companies don’t pay claims, and what you can do about it” was also the title of of a 2010 book by legal expert Jay Feinman that was critical of the health insurance industry. Amazon has ceased selling that book.

Mangione, Gilman’s 2016 valedictorian, was arrested Monday in Pennsylvania. The killing has gripped the country and ignited debate about health care in America.

It's perfectly appropriate for somebody in Baltimore to celebrate murder.

Oregon, My Oregon

107.5koolfm, Bend, Oregon Has Had Enough of Googly-Eyed Vandals

While the joke may seem harmless to some, it’s creating headaches—and expenses—for the city.

Over the past few weeks, a mysterious vandal has been sticking googly eyes on everything from statues to street signs. At first glance, it seems like fun and games, but the city says the damage isn’t as innocent as it looks. Removing the adhesives without harming the art has racked up a bill of at least $1,500.

The situation got so out of hand that the city made a public plea on social media, urging the prankster to put the googly eyes away. In the post, officials wrote, “The googly eyes placed on the various art pieces around town might give you a chuckle, [but] it costs money to remove them with care to not damage the art. Let’s avoid adhesives, graffiti, and all things that can damage the art.”

Maybe we could invite the vandals to move to Washington D.C.?

The Wednesday Wetness

Hurricane Helene has wrecked havoc in several southeastern states, and Hurricane Milton is barreling towards Florida. These latest climate disasters have left a devastating trail of destruction, leaving many communities without power, cell service, and running water. Our hearts go out to all those affected, including our River Network staff in Asheville, North Carolina, and in Florida, who are thankfully safe amidst the widespread flooding.

These events serve as a stark reminder of the critical importance of proactive planning and the urgent need to build resilient communities. This blog is a work-in-progress to provide timely resources related to flooding impacts and drinking water safety.

Heavy rainfall can make well water unsafe to drink. If you think flooding has impacted your well water, use bottled water. Do not use water from a flooded well until it has been tested. If the well was flooded and underwater, do not turn on the pump until you are sure the electrical system is completely dried out. Pumps need to be cleaned and lubricated if they’ve been covered by flood water and sediment.

If you get your water from a public water system and are under a boil water advisory, boil water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and washing any areas of the skin that have been cut or injured.

Waterways affected by flooding may also be unsafe to contact – East Tennessee surface waters may be contaminated by wastewater treatment plants that were compromised, for example. Floodwaters may bring contamination from other industries, farmland, and power plants, and standing water can increase the presence of mold and insects, like mosquitoes, that can carry diseases.
A little dated, but still good advice.

That damned Don Soprano, making demands on Hamas! Who does he think he is?" Too bad I can't vote for him again!

Forget It Jake, It's Baltimore

From the Balmer Sun, Concrete falls from railroad bridge, striking car in East Baltimore

One person was injured when concrete came loose from a railroad bridge in East Baltimore and struck a car below on Sunday, according to the Baltimore City Fire Department.

The concrete fell onto the westbound side of Northpoint Road around 11:30 a.m., hitting the car’s door and breaking the windshield. The driver suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized, fire officials said. She walked out of the car on her own and was the only person in the vehicle.

Fire department spokesperson John Marsh initially referred to the accident as a “partial collapse” but later emphasized that the concrete was only debris. Twelve fire units responded.

The roadway was temporarily closed Sunday with traffic being rerouted at Quad Avenue and Northpoint Road. Sunday afternoon, there was still debris in the road under the bridge.
. . .
Amtrak said around 3 p.m. Sunday that its crews had completed a safety analysis of the bridge and that train traffic was set to commence pending approval of the City’s Department of Transportation. The department did not respond to a request for comment.

I'm sure the bridge is fine, just fine.

Daniel Penny, Not Guilty!

Ace was first with the news, at least for me, in red italics with the trademark flaming skull, Verdict: Daniel Penny Is Not Guilty of Anything. Liberal rent-a-mobs protest.

And in response to commenters wondering if Bragg would go back after him on the dismissed Manslaughter charge:
Update: Some commenters are saying he could still be re-tried on the count of manslaughter 2 that was dismissed (on the motion of the prosecution) on Friday. No. Once a jury is empaneled, double jeopardy attaches. A mistrial can be retried because it's a mistrial -- no true trial occurred, as no verdict was rendered -- but once the jury is empaneled, a dismissal is a dismissal with prejudice. He's free and clear on these charges forever.

Also, he's free and clear on these facts. In other words, the prosecutors cannot take the same facts at trial here and spin out another new charge. They are barred from bringing up new charges based on the same facts if they could have brought them up in a prior trial. They cannot now say "we're charging him for aggravated battery." That charge would arise from the same facts here. They've had their bite at this particular apple, they don't get another one.

They may try to find some other facts they can make charges on to persecute him, but he is now free and clear on these charges and any other charges arising from these facts.

Update to my update: I just remembered, prosecutors unfortunately can try some bullsh*t where they bring a "violation of civil rights" charge. The feds did that with the cops in the LA riots case. That was ruled not to be based on the "same facts" as the original charges were.

I don't expect them to do that but I guess they could. I imagine that Penny would try to dismiss these charges citing double jeopardy, but I don't know if the case law would be on his side.

I'm a little surprised. If a conviction on manslaughter had enough support to hang the jury, how did a lesser charge get a unanimous not guilty? Were there just a few holdouts who finally saw the light of day, or just wanted to go home?
