Flotsam and Jetsam - SCOTUS Nixes Racial Gerrymandering

Voting 6-3 along exactly the lines you'd expect, the Supreme Court overturned lower courts who had demanded states set aside certain seats to create safe congressional seats for racial minorities based on the Voting Rights Act. The ruling doesn't forbid gerrymandering on a partisan basis (looking at you Texas, Virginia and California), and puts a large number of seats in red states vulnerable to redistricting favorable to the GOP. As you might imagine, Democrats are throwing a hissy fit. Matt Vespa at TownHall, The Supreme Court Has Ruled on the Voting Rights Act. Matt Margolis at PJM, Supreme Court Drops HUGE Ruling on the Voting Rights Act. "In a 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, the majority held that Louisiana's congressional map — redrawn to include a second majority-black district — constitutes an unconstitutional racial gerrymander under the Fifteenth Amendment. The Court stopped short of striking down Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act entirely, but it dramatically narrowed the ways in which states may use race when drawing congressional maps." Capt. Ed at Hat Hair, NEW: SCOTUS Narrows Section 2 of Voting Rights Act, Strikes Down Racial Gerrymander. Benny Johnson @bennyjohnson, "MASSIVE WIN: Supreme Court just ruled 6-3 that drawing Congressional districts solely based on race is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Republicans could flip a dozen Democrats seats in the South alone ahead of the midterms." At Althouse, "The justices, split along ideological lines, ruled that the voting map was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander." "In her dissent, Justice Elena Kagan accused the court’s conservative majority of gutting the Voting Rights Act. " From "Live Updates: Supreme Court Strikes Down Louisiana Map in Voting Rights Case" (NYT)."The upshot of Rucho was that, as far as federal law is concerned, a state legislature may use partisan advantage as a factor in redistricting. And litigants cannot circumvent that rule by dressing their political-gerrymandering claims in racial garb.... [T]he Voting Rights Act did not require Louisiana to create an additional majority-minority district, [so] no compelling interest justified the State’s use of race in creating SB8." Sundance at CTH, Supreme Court Rules Racial District Gerrymandering Violates Constitution. Maryland, My Maryland

From the Free Bacon, Wes Moore Won a Key White House Post Claiming He Was 'Touted as a Foremost Expert' on Radical Islam and Was Studying for an Oxford PhD—But His Thesis Is 'Missing' and There's No Evidence He Was Ever a Doctoral Student

Maryland governor Wes Moore, now considered a serious prospect for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, got his big break in 2006. Fresh off a one-year deployment to Afghanistan, President George W. Bush awarded Moore, then 27, a White House fellowship, a prestigious, year-long internship during which he served as a special assistant to then-secretary of state Condoleezza Rice. It put Moore on the path to ultimately becoming Maryland's governor, and he won the fellowship—in the turbulent years after 9/11—claiming to be a "foremost expert" on radical Islam thanks to his academic work at Oxford University.

"As a Rhodes Scholar, I took advantage of the opportunity and examined radical Islam in the Western Hemisphere," Moore wrote in his application to serve as a White House fellow, indicating that he had graduated from Oxford in 2003 with a Master of Letters, or MLitt, in international relations. "I completed my degree with honors and my research has led me to be touted as one of the foremost experts on the threat." The White House parroted the claim in a press release announcing the 2006 fellowship class, borrowing from Moore's application to note that his Oxford thesis, which it said was titled The Rise and Ramifications of Radical Islam in the Western Hemisphere, had "earned him praise as one of the foremost experts on the topic."

That a 27-year-old could claim to be a "foremost expert" on the Islamic threat based on a year at an American military base in Afghanistan and two years at Oxford could be excused away as an ambitious young man's puffery. But on close examination, Moore's claims of expertise and of being a serious scholar completely unravel, as do his claims, also on his White House fellowship application, that he was working toward an Oxford doctorate.

The problems start with confusion—which neither Moore's staff nor Oxford's registrars were willing or able to clear up—about when Moore completed his studies, when he received his degree, whether he submitted his thesis, and what the title of the work was.

In his White House fellowship application—which is public record—Moore wrote that he graduated from Oxford in 2003. But in the résumé attached to that application, Moore reported a different graduation date: June 2004.

Asked to reconcile the two dates, a spokesman for the governor didn't provide a photograph of Moore's degree, but rather, a "degree confirmation," generated last week by Oxford's registrar's office, indicating Moore completed his graduate studies as a full-time student and "has been awarded the degree," but has not yet been issued a formal certificate. The "degree confirmation" generated by Oxford gives another contradictory date, showing that Moore completed his full-time graduate studies in November of 2005, a full four years after he began his Oxford studies, though a master's degree typically takes two years to earn.

According to Moore, by November 2005, the month when Oxford now says Moore completed his master's studies, he was serving in the 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan. He also says he began working as an investment banker at Deutsche Bank in London in March 2004.

That's just the beginning of the peculiarities and inconsistencies surrounding Moore's graduate studies, which a spokesman for the governor, Ammar Moussa, dismissed—after several off-the-record conversations—by saying the Washington Free Beacon is not "engaged in journalism" and is "doing what they always do: manufacturing doubt about the accomplishments of a Black veteran, Rhodes Scholar, and public servant because it fits their narrative." . . .

Flotsam and Jetsam - The Charlotte Horror Show

Stacy McCain is on it, ‘Blood Visibly Drips on the Floor as the Defendant Walks Away From the Victim’

"The headline quotes from the affidavit for the arrest last month of Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr. in Charlotte, North Carolina: Detectives obtained video from inside of the train car. The video is clear and of ID quality. The victim enters the train car and sits in the seats directly in front of the defendant. The train travels for approximately four and a half minutes before the suspect pulls a knife from his pocket, unfolds the knife, pauses, then stands up, and strikes the victim three times. Blood visibly drips on the floor as the defendant walks away from the victim. The victim goes unresponsive shortly after the attack. The defendant is the assailant on the video. There appears to be no interaction between the victim and the defendant."

How can this happen? A guy with an armed robbery conviction on his rap sheet, so dangerous that his own mother kicked him out of her house, so crazy that he calls 911 to report his delusions, gets turned loose without paying a cent of bail. His own public defender tells the judge that his client lacks the “mental capacity” to participate in court proceedings, the judge orders an “evaluation” — yet this violent psycho is nevertheless permitted to continue wandering the streets until one Friday night when the voices in his head tell him to stab a complete stranger in the neck for no apparent reason. Did I mention that in November 2024, Kamala Harris got 65% of the vote in Mecklenburg County? Because that’s the only possible explanation that comes to mind.

Democrats are objectively pro-crime. It is the de facto policy of the Democratic Party that mentally ill criminals should be turned loose on the streets until they stab somebody in the neck. Maryland, My Maryland

Dan Greenfield at Front Page, Black Governor Vetoes Racial Reparations Bill

Slavery reparations are dead. How dead are they? Dead enough that not even black governors want them.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore vetoed a measure that would have created a commission to study reparations in the former slave state.

Moore vetoed the bill on Friday but said he will propose other methods to address the effects of slavery, Jim Crow laws and other forms of discrimination against blacks in Maryland.

The proposed commission would have explored options for addressing the state’s past and subsequent laws deemed discriminatory toward blacks from 1865 to 1965.

The options would have included a formal apology, cash payments or enacting laws that would make amends for past wrongs.
Why did Moore veto it? California’s experiment with racial reparations was probably an influence. After authorizing commissions to study reparations, they did nothing except stir up controversy. California let the process go far enough that it produced massive potential payments that could never be authorized, raising hopes in the black community of huge checks while touching off outrage among white residents.

And then there’s the whole awkward problem of whether reparations would be limited to actual descendants of slaves or anyone who is black which created its own divisions in the black community.

Besides, they all ready got reparations. Remember 40 acres and a mule? I asked Grok what an acre of farmland in Alabama is worth currently; the answer is approximately  $3,409, but of course, it varies by region. And a mule? "The cost of a mule in Alabama in 2025 typically ranges from $1,000 to $8,000, with most mules sold between $1,000 and $3,000" So the value of the reparations they received is worth on the order of $137,000 in today's money. Now, of course, that was per family, not per person. Still, not insignificant.

But the glamour model, who has 32T breasts after operations to enhance them, has since claimed she's 'received invitations from fans in many African countries'.

Now Big and her partner are planning to move to the continent, with the influencer saying: 'My husband and I had already planned to emigrate a few years ago, but then the pandemic hit. 'We have received invitations from fans in many African countries and so it hasn't been easy to choose,' Big said. 'Currently, we have Kenya and Namibia on our shortlist.

'Since most of my modelling jobs are in Europe and the US, Michael fears it will be difficult for me to earn money in Africa. I've had to work hard to convince him that this is the best decision for us.'

Campus Reform informs us University of Maryland to offer ‘Fat Studies’ course about the ‘intersection’ of ‘blackness’ and ‘fatness’

The University of Maryland is slated to offer an “Intro to Fat Studies” course in the upcoming spring semester that will focus on “Fatness, Blackness and Their Intersections.”

The three-credit class, which is offered through the Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS), “[e]xamines fatness as an area of human difference subject to privilege and discrimination that intersects with other systems of oppression based on gender, race, class, sexual orientation, and ability.”

The course description states that the class will highlight “fatness” as “a social justice issue,” and will conclude with a focus on “fat liberation as liberation for all bodies” and on methods of fighting “fatmisia,” which means “hatred of fatness.”
Sydney Lewis, a senior lecturer with the Department of WGSS, will lead the introductory course this spring in Susquehanna Hall.

Lewis’s research experience consists of topics including “African American/African Diaspora,” “Black Feminist Thought,” “LGBTQ Studies,” and “Queer Theory.”

Lewis’s teaching methods aim to “blur the boundaries between the academy, art, and activism,” as mentioned in her university biography. “Her areas of interest include gender performance and performativity, black feminist theory and culture, and intersectional black liberation.”

“Intro to Fat Studies” also serves as an approved general education credit for students across various majors. The course fulfills requirements in the university’s “Distributive Studies-Humanities” and “Diversity-Understanding Plural Societies” categories.

Can she get Lizzo as a guest lecturer? It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings.

Flotsam and Jetsam - Bret vs Kamala

The big Fox interview happened more or less on schedule last night between Fox moderator Bret Baier and Democrat presidential wannabe Kamala Harris. Reportedly, team Kamala arrived 15 minutes late, which gave the network a short slot, and a hard deadline to show it at 6 PM EDT. Bret likened it to icing the kicker. I missed most of it last night, since it came on at dinner time (call me anything, but don't call me late for dinner), but I listened to it this morning at Sundance's link below.
