Flotsam and Jetsam - Supreme Court Allows Ballroom to Proceed 5-4

The government has established that it is likely to succeed on the merits of a significant legal question, that it would likely suffer irreparable harm without a stay, and that the balance of equities tips in its favor." Mark Paoletta @MarkPaoletta, "Superb ruling by the Supreme Court! There is absolutely zero standing for the National Trust to sue. Simply not liking a building does not constitute injury. Basic Article III limitation. D.C. Circuit Judge Neomi Rao set the table for this decision with her brilliant dissent finding no standing. This is an encouraging development for the many other cases where leftwing groups baselessly sue to thwart President Trump’s America First agenda, and leftwing district judges issue baseless injunctions despite lacking jurisdiction. Hopefully, this great Supreme Court decision is the beginning of reining in these lawless tactics. President Trump showed great leadership in pushing forward expeditiously to complete this important ballroom/military complex. Well done, Mr. President!" Josh Blackmun at the Volokh Conspiracy, is trying to Make Sense Of The Chief Justice's Tango In The Ballroom Case. "It was the Chief, and not KBJ, who was holding up the case. Was he trying to flip ACB's vote?" Hans Mahncke @HansMahncke, "One of the most galling aspects of all this lawfare is that so much of it is run through 501(c)(3) organizations, meaning organizations whose activities are effectively subsidized by taxpayers. They then use the aura of “IRS approved nonprofit” status to confer a kind of legitimacy on themselves, as though the government has somehow endorsed what they do. It has not. These are private activist organizations pursuing their own agendas. ..." Quote Shawn Fleetwood @ShawnFleetwood, "BREAKING: Supreme Court ends lower court blockade against Trump’s White House ballroom construction. Chief Justice Roberts joins the court’s Democrat appointees in dissent." It's time to end the 501c3 bullshit.

From Ace, Trump Announces Truly Huge Deal to... Take Over 65 Billion Barrels' Worth of Venezuela's Oil Reserves?! Why would they do this? Because successive socialist governments have, get this, run the oil industry into the ground. They did not do basic maintenance and never bothered to upgrade and modernize their infrastructure. They have billions of barrels of oil they never invested any money in so the oil remains underground. The socialists, if you can believe this, simply extracted oil (and embezzled the money) while doing nothing to safeguard the future health of the industry. So Venezuela needs outside help to do the most basic things. Let's elect socialists in America to work the same Economic Miracles! I don't know if I like this. Venezuela has a nasty habit of repudiating past agreements and "nationalizing" -- stealing -- foreign investments in their oil industry."

Flotsam and Jetsam - Supreme Court Lets Trump Regulate Mail-in Voting

Matt Margolis at PJM hears SCOTUS Gives Trump HUGE Win on Mail-In Voting. "Trump signed the executive order, called "Ensuring Citizenship Verification And Integrity In Federal Elections, in March 2026. It directs his administration to build lists of eligible voters and orders the U.S. Postal Service to deliver mail ballots only to people on those lists. The Postal Service laid out its implementation plan last week, but the clock is ticking. Some states start sending mail ballots in just a few weeks, leaving the administration little time to get this right before the midterms. More court challenges remain possible." Again, like the ballroom, it's one of those "we haven't really decided yet, but you can proceed for now" decisions. At Althouse, "Supreme Court Allows Trump Plan to Restrict Mail-In Voting, for Now." "The administration asked the court to clear the way for President Trump’s order that creates 'state citizenship lists' and directs the Postal Service to decide who gets a mail-in ballot". Mark Mendlovitz @MendlovitzMark, "The Supreme Court ruling that lets the Trump Administration proceed with mail ballot security measures has Democrats freaking out, but what's really driving them bonkers is less about providing voter lists for eligibility determination (though they are certainly worried about that) and much more about MATCHING BARCODES of the outer and inner envelopes in a mail ballot package. Here is why that's the problem for them. If surplus mail ballots collected from people who aren't voting by mail are somehow voted on behalf of OTHER PEOPLE, it becomes readily detectable that a ballot was repurposed from its originally intended voter to someone else on the voter rolls. The "no-match" condition means that ballot was taken from the originally intended voter or it was given away. Either way that's how fraud can be easily detected. Keep in mind, the barcode matching requirement does not require any personal information that isn't on the outside of an envelope, and it doesn't prevent states from using mail to conduct elections, so the hysterical reactions are confirmation they know the gig is up."

Flotsam and Jetsam - Justice Roberts Gives Trump Ballroom Go Ahead

No doubt liberals are gnashing there teeth. Susie Moore at RedState says SCOTUS Cuts In on Ballroom Battle, Lets Construction Proceed - for Now. Beege Welborn at Hat Hair hears SCOTUS to Trump: Build, Baby, Build. Sundance at CTH, Chief Justice Roberts Stays DC Appellate Court Ruling – White House Construction of Ballroom Can Continue. Althouse likes her NYT, "The Supreme Court on Friday temporarily allowed President Trump to continue construction of a luxury White House ballroom to replace the East Wing he demolished last fall." "The NYT reports. In a one-sentence order, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., acting on his own, issued a place holder that gives all nine justices additional time to more fully consider whether construction of the planned 90,000-square-foot ballroom can proceed. The chief justice’s order did not provide a timeline for when the court would act next, stating only that a lower-court ruling against the Trump administration was paused “pending further order of the undersigned or of the court.”" So, the suit against Trump is on hold pending a decision from the whole court, but the presumption is that Robert feels the whole court is likely to agree. Besides, the ballroom is more than half complete (Trump doesn't waste time), and by the time the court gets around to it, it will be fait accompli.

Speaking of building, NYPo opines Trump is right to put his neck on the line for data centers. Scott Pinsker at PJM notes Republicans Are Pandering to Data Center Hysteria — and Helping China Win the AI War. It's always easy to gin up opposition to something new. Zarathustra @zarathustra5150, "It’s very much an out-group phenomenon. Over the last decade, Big Tech has managed, in different ways, to deeply alienate both the political right & political left, and most of the American public to boot. Much of it returns to the same enduring problem: techies are tragically inept at understanding people, politics, persuasion & culture; while cocooning themselves away from the rest of society inside an extremely tiny, insular, out-of-touch milieu that leaves them unable to grasp the consequences of their own behavior, particularly just how thoroughly they have made themselves disliked by nearly everyone else in America at this point. The Trump Administration just moved to terminate the ABA's status as a law school "accreditor." This will be one of the most meaningful changes to open doors for Americans and steer legal culture toward justice, not radical indoctrination. One of these policies is that meetings with detainees must be scheduled in advance, both for the privacy of detainees and the safety of visitors. Field leadership welcomed the Congresswoman and led a comprehensive tour tailored to the specific areas she had requested to see, including visitor check-in, intake, kitchen/food preparation and medical services. During a tour of the kitchen area, the Congresswoman asked to speak with certain detainees in the area and was reminded that without prior consent from detainees, her request could not be accommodated at that time. I get pissed off about horrible things, but they don’t really shock me. This does. This paper in the Journal of Medical Ethics draws a comparison between female genital mutilation and “gender affirming” surgeries — and uses the latter as justification for the former. To be clear: after pushing an entire generation of gay and autistic children to volunteer for genital mutilation, these people are using that as an excuse to cut up little girls‘ vulvas with neither consent nor the presence of a medical professional, let alone any kind of pain management. And just like that, gender ideology has become justification for the most barbaric custom on planet Earth."
