Zoë Montana Hoetzel (born September 23, 1994), known professionally as Zolita, is an American singer-songwriter. She gained viral success with the music video for "Explosion", which has over sixteen million views on YouTube as of December 2020. Following its success, she released the music videos for the singles "Holy" (2016) and "Fight Like a Girl" (2017) directed by herself.  On October 13, 2015, she released independently her debut extended play Immaculate Conception, and on May 18, 2018, she released her second extended play Sappho. 

Zolita was born on September 23, 1994, in New York to Heidi Schwarck and Holger Hoetzel, and was raised in Calabasas, California. Her father is of German descent, and her mother is of Danish descent. Her father inspired her to start making music and she grew up playing bluegrass and flat pick guitar.

Zolita's music has been described as "a blend of dark-pop and R&B". Her musical style incorporates witchcraft and religion. She says that religious and witchcraft magic aesthetics are a huge part of her life saying "I feel like queer people are so drawn to Wicca and witchcraft because it's always been the alternative religion, it puts the power in yourself, and it's not historically been a religion that doesn't like queer people." She also cites Lady Gaga as her biggest influence

Zolita identifies as lesbian. In a 2017 interview, she stated that she was afraid to come out to her female friends, saying "I was also worried that my female friends would no longer want to have girls' nights or sleepovers for fear that I might be attracted to them. So, I decided to keep my newfound queerness a secret." She also identifies herself as a Witch; she explains this in videos on her YouTube channel, but also in her music videos where witchcraft is incorporated.

A Hollywood Tragedy

A week ago, in Random Celebrity News, I mentioned the bizarre accident when actress Anne Heche plowed into a house and was sent to a hospital with burns. A few days later news came that she died of her injuries, but I let that one go, feeling no need to speak further ill of the dead. Stacy McCain has no such compunction:  The Tragedy of Anne Heche

Heche was something of a rising star when she hooked up with Ellen DeGeneres at a Vanity Fair Oscar party in 1997. Heche, then 28 and more than a decade younger than DeGeneres, claimed she had never before been involved with a woman before. Her relationship with DeGeneres lasted less than three years and, while it didn’t exactly end Heche’s career — she continued acting in movies and television up until her death — certainly it dimmed her star power in Hollywood:

“It changed my life forever,” Heche admitted to Page Six in 2020. “The stigma attached to that relationship was so bad … I didn’t do a studio picture for 10 years. I was fired from a $10 million picture deal.” 

Oh, it was the “stigma” that did the damage, was it? Never mind what the people who buy movie tickets think — “Damn those homophobes!” — and never mind, of course, that Heche’s status as “bisexual” seemed rather transient. She left DeGeneres for a man, and then left him for another man, and if she ever had any further involvement in what the media call “the LGBTQ community,” she never mentioned it publicly.

Toxicology reportedly found cocaine and fentanyl in her blood after she rammed her car into a home in L.A. in the middle of the afternoon last week, and she died after being removed from life support Friday.

Just for the record, I don’t approve of cocaine or fentanyl, either, and if any dopeheads feel stigmatized because of my disapproval, tough luck.

I find it hard to believe that her lesbian relationship with DeGeneris was a problem with the Hollywood crowd at all, where homosexuality has been common and accepted for years. More likely, her turning her back on it was a problem as it conflicted with the dogma that it is something you are born with and can't alter. 

She claimed to have been abused as a child, and led a rather tumultuous life. Craziness, drugs and driving do not mix. Yes, it is a tragedy.

But it will make a great movie!

We were elated after hearing about the decision in favor of Brunetti this morning. For us this has always been a First Amendment issue. It’s not just a victory for one man with a clothing brand or for a misunderstood band, but a triumph of free speech. Thank you Simon Tam and The Slants for laying the groundwork, and thank you to the supreme court for upholding the value of free speech in the Brunetti case. Much gratitude to the US government for recognizing that there is value in all forms of expression including those that are “scandalous and immoral.” This is a huge step forward! BUT it does not mean that we will automatically be granted our trademark. In fact, it is possible for the USPTO to rule against us on other grounds if they so choose. But the ruling certainly gives us hope!

There’s a certain element of foreshadowing in this story, like clues scattered at the scene of a crime. For example, in their first video, we learn that Rob and Lauren met in 2004 because they were both bloggers and she saw Rob’s photo of himself doing a backflip on the beach. She left a comment on his blog, then arranged to meet him at his workplace — they attended the same university — and they were instantly inseparable.

Love at first sight, or dangerous impulsiveness? With the benefit of hindsight, we must conclude it was the latter, especially when we get to Lauren’s “How I Realized I Was Gay” video, in which she says that a 2015 Hailee Steinfeld music video was the decisive moment.

Rule 5 Saturday - The Mutable Portia di Rossi

For some reason or another, my selection for Rule 5 Saturday this week is Portia di Rossi:

Portia Lee James DeGeneres (born Amanda Lee Rogers; 31 January 1973), known professionally as Portia de Rossi, is an Australian and American model, philanthropist, and actress. She is best known for starring as Nelle Porter on the American drama series Ally McBeal (1998–2002), for which she won a Screen Actors Guild Award, as Lindsay Bluth Fünke on the American television sitcom Arrested Development (2003–2006, 2013, 2018), and as Elizabeth North on the American political thriller series Scandal (2014–2017).

Portia de Rossi, born Amanda Lee Rogers in Horsham, Victoria, Australia, is the daughter of Margaret, a medical receptionist, and Barry Rogers. Her father died when she was nine years old. She grew up in Grovedale, a suburb of Geelong, Victoria, and modelled for print and TV commercials as a child. In 1988, at age 15, Rogers adopted the name Portia de Rossi, by which she remains best known. In 2005, she explained she had intended to reinvent herself, using the given name of Portia, a character from William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, and an Italian last name. From 2001 to 2004, de Rossi dated director Francesca Gregorini, the daughter of Barbara Bach and the stepdaughter of Ringo Starr. She said that most of her family and Ally McBeal castmates did not know she was a lesbian until tabloid pictures of the couple were published. She declined to publicly discuss the relationship or her sexual orientation at the time.

De Rossi and Gregorini broke up in late 2004 because de Rossi began dating DeGeneres, whom she met backstage at an awards show. In 2005, she opened up publicly about her sexual orientation in interviews with Details and The Advocate. She and DeGeneres became engaged when DeGeneres proposed with a three-carat diamond ring.

In case you don’t know, The CW is a cable network, jointly owned by CBS and Warner Brothers, that has a demonstrable pattern of putting homosexual characters into all its shows. Like, there was a lesbian character named Lexa on The CW’s show The 100 who had a romance with another of the female characters, spawning about a zillion GIF-filled posts on the Tumblr fandom for this obscure show, which never ranked above 150 in Nielsen ratings. Micro-targeting niche audiences is now a cable trend. Like, in a nation of 325 million people, a TV audience of 1.5 million isn’t even half of 1% of the population, yet The 100 was recently renewed for its sixth season. Meanwhile, The CW keeps putting gay characters into shows like Supergirl (two lesbian police detectives, plus Lena Luthor, who obviously has the hots for Kara) and now, they’ve announced, Australian lesbian actress/model Ruby Rose will be cast as the title character in Batwoman. You’d think the Left would be happy, but there’s no pleasing the Internet mobs of Social Justice Warriors:

Rose’s casting is set to make her the first LGBTQ lead in a live-action superhero series. Two days after the announcement, the Australian actress deleted her Twitter account and limited comments on her Instagram account to only people she knew after some fans took to social media to express their anger . . .
Rose is the latest star to be hounded off social media after a fan backlash. Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, Star Wars actresses Kelly Marie Tran and Daisy Ridley have all deleted their social media accounts following harassment, threats and relentless negativity.

SJWs’ entire sense of self-worth and “accomplishment” depends on being aggrieved by literally anything. So attempting to appease them is useless; they must have something to bitch and whine about.
Apparently among the grievances is that Ruby Rose, though identifying as a lesbian since age 12 (which is another matter I won’t bother with), also says she’s “gender-fluid,” which means she’s not a perfectly lesbian lesbian therefore cannot play a lesbian.
Also, “straight girls” like her, and she’s “well-known,” so she can’t play a lesbian.
Also she’s “hot,” so that takes this particular lesbian out of contention to play a lesbian.

You can't make them happy, so don't even try. Their whole reason for being is to be aggrieved. Accommodate that instead.

As for too hot to play a lesbian? First, there can be no such thing. You have your fantasies and I have mine. Second, contrary to cliche, there is such a thing as too thin, and I would put her personally fairly far down on the canonical lesbian hotness scale, with Rosy O'Donnell as a 0 and Angelina Jolie as 100; perhaps a 20 at best. I don't find this set of tats particularly attractive.
