Flotsam and Jetsam - Trump Says China Messed with 2020 Election, Intelligence Covered for Them

President Trump gave a national address last night, and the major networks, with the exception of Fox, refuse to run it live, preferring to cherry-pick clips to make him look bad. As we expected, the subject was largely revelations about the 2020 elections recently pried out of the reluctant hands of the intelligence agencies, that China hacked the voter roles (why? or was just because they could), and boosted opposition to Trump, that the intelligence agencies conspired to conceal that, the same agencies that pushed the Russian collusion delusion in 2016 and after, and that the American voting system is full of holes by design, from 200,000 illegal aliens (at a minimum) registered to vote, and mass mail-in voting as a potential vehicle for fraud. All stuff we kind of knew. Hopefully, though this is the start of some real actions. So, nothing really new here, but additional confirmations of what we already suspected.

As with many other parts of the country, several counties in Maryland have recently seen parents pushing back against inappropriate sexual content in school libraries and getting some books removed from the shelves. The books primarily deal with either transgender ideology or more adult sexual content of any nature. But the Democrats in the state legislature want to put an end to that. They are currently working to jam through a new bill that is cleverly called the "Freedom to Read Act." They claim to be working to ensure a consistent statewide standard for library content, but the underlying goal seems obvious. They are unhappy with the success the parents have achieved and they want those books placed back on the shelves. The main battlegrounds for this battle appear to be Carroll and Howard counties, both located in more rural areas to the North and West of Baltimore.  

A rise in challenges to books in Maryland’s schools and public libraries — including dozens recently in Carroll County schools — has put the state on a path to becoming one of the few with guardrails on book bans.

The Freedom to Read Act, which Democrats in the Maryland General Assembly are gunning to pass in the legislative session’s final weeks, would set a statewide standard for some content in libraries for the first time. Although books found to contain sexual content could still be pulled from shelves under the bill, the act has infuriated some opponents. They argue it would tie the hands of local government and school officials to eliminate materials they find unsuitable for children.

Proponents of the legislation say the standards it would set are critical at a time when parents and activists in places like Carroll and Howard counties have challenged books that primarily target stories of LGBTQ youth or that deal with race.

The Carroll County School Board is currently in the midst of reviewing 58 books that the superintendent ordered removed from the shelves because of explicit content. The protesting parents were organized by the local chapter of Moms for Liberty, and they've seen some success in pushing for these changes. Nine books have been removed thus far during the review, with some others either being limited to high school libraries or requiring parental consent forms to take them out from the library. That might change if this new legislation is passed, however.

So what sort of books are being removed in Carroll County? Some of them seem a bit dubious to be on the list, such as “Slaughterhouse Five” by Kurt Vonnegut. That one will be retained in high school libraries, but not elementary or middle schools. That's a fairly dense and intense book for younger children to tackle, I'll admit, but I wouldn't lump it in with pornography. Others are more obvious. Those include "Doing It! Let's Talk About Sex" by Hannah Wilton. She's the same author who goes on social media to offer free tips for finding affordable sex toys and poses with some of her own. Another is “Red Hood,” by Elana Arnold. It's described in one review as "a very loose retelling of Little Red Riding Hood driven by female empowerment and sisterhood." It's also called out for being "very bloody" and overtly sexualized.

 

One of the first to fall was “Gender Queer" by Maia Kobabe. That book has been removed from more schools around the country than almost any other. It's true that the book is presented in cartoon format, but it includes graphically explicit drawings, including one showing a young boy performing oral sex on another young boy. How on Earth did anyone ever find that to be appropriate for school children, particularly in elementary school? I don't care whether it's a boy doing it to another boy or a girl with a boy. It should be up to parents to decide when their children learn about the birds and the bees.

At least make kids work to find their porn.

NYPo, Maryland school district with LGBTQ book list rejected books promoting ‘American values’

A Maryland school district that recently unveiled an LGBTQ-inclusive book list for elementary schools has declined to recommend several children’s books on the basis that they promote “American values,” Fox News Digital has learned.

Fox News Digital first reported Tuesday that books recommended by Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), Maryland’s most affluent school district, teach words like “intersex” and “drag queen” to children as young as 4.

Records later provided to Fox News Digital by Bethany Mandel, editor of the Heroes of Liberty book series, showed that MCPS recently declined to recommend three non-fiction children’s books that were donated to the school district by Heroes of Liberty Inc., which seeks to counter progressive literature favored by public schools.

The New York-based company donated three children’s books about libertarian economist Thomas Sowell, Supreme Court Associate Justice Amy Coney Barrett and Founding Father Alexander Hamilton for use in MCPS libraries and recommended for grades 2-6.

According to records on the school district’s Database of Accountable Evaluations (DAE), MCPS declined to recommend the 2021 biography “Thomas Sowell: A Self-Made Man” on Sept. 30.

The MCPS evaluation said that a “weakness” of the Sowell book was that “the publisher has a stated mission of creating books with ‘the American values that made this country great.’”A Maryland school district recently unveiled an LGBTQ book list for elementary schools.FOX News Live

An MCPS evaluation also conducted on Sept. 30 similarly declined to recommend the 2021 biography “Amy Coney Barrett: A Justice and a Mother.”

The MCPS evaluation said that two “weaknesses” of the Coney Barrett book were that “the publisher seems to have an agenda – publishing books about people with ‘American values’” and that it “glosses over a lot of her life. The book is more about a message than an informative biography.”

A third evaluation conducted by MCPS on Sept. 30 declined to recommend the 2022 biography “Alexander Hamilton: From Immigrant Boy to Father.”

According to the evaluation, a “weakness” of the Hamilton book was that it “leaves out too much factual information about Hamilton’s life. The book is more about a message than an informative biography.”

Only leftist propaganda is allowed in Montgomery County schools. 

Not Your Daddy's Chesapeake Bay

I found this in the Bay Journal today, and this passage struck a chord with me, The case for a Chesapeake 'style' Bay

. . . which brings me to Jerry Schubel’s new book, The Future Chesapeake: Shaping the Future (Archway Press, 2021). Schubel began his long and illustrious career in marine science at Johns Hopkins University, at the old Chesapeake Bay Institute, then he headed major institutions on Long Island Sound, Boston Harbor and the Pacific coast.

The Future Chesapeake elaborates on Tom’s vision, steeped in science but also informed by the author’s devotion to the humanities. Schubel’s earlier book of essays and photography, The Living Chesapeake, is required reading for my university classes.

Like this double-length Chesapeake Born column, Schubel’s Future is no more than a starting point for a long-needed conversation: a complete rethinking of the current Bay restoration effort, which increasingly is banging its head against the wall, at risk of losing credibility and support.

The Bay of the future won’t resemble even its recent past. Schubel argues that despite decades of honest effort and billions of dollars, progress in restoring the Bay to something like the health it displayed before the 1970s has produced only modest progress, graded by environmental groups mostly in the range of D’s and C’s.

Nor is our “student” likely to ever score B’s, let alone A’s, given the accelerating headwinds of climate change and a watershed population on its way to triple the 8 million who lived here when the Bay was healthier, Schubel believes:

“Restoration may be a fine [goal] for old cars, for some endangered species and maybe whole ecosystems in a slowly changing world. But our world is changing more rapidly than any time in 200,000 years of modern human history. … We must try new ideas.”

“Restoration has not delivered … except to keep things better than if we’d done nothing … but forces already set loose, principally climate change … are going to make the current trajectory less successful even as it gets more expensive,” he writes.

Satisfactorily resolving the fate of the Chesapeake Bay, Schubel says, is an example of what has come to be known as a “wicked” problem. Wicked problems are so complex, often dealing with ever-shifting conditions from politics to climate, that they can be difficult to even define. Think less in terms of any solution at all, Schubel advises. Think in terms of “containment” of the Bay’s declines; think “minimizing regret.”

The book is not so gloomy as I’ve just made it sound. Gloomy would be pressing down the same old paths, continuing to miss deadline after deadline, falsely hoping every short-term positive trend turns out to be long term.

Nor is Schubel saying we should stop treating our sewage or requiring cleaner air, or that we should stop encouraging forests and wetlands. But we’d be better off, he writes, “investing in creating the Chesapeake Bay for the future rather than in trying to return it to some previous condition. … Perhaps, we should pause … reboot and affirm the qualities we want the Bay to have in the future that are in sync with the population we expect, and with the prevailing natural processes, including sea level rise and [warmer waters] that climate change will bring.”

If we do, he would “expect our aspirations and strategies … would be different from the strategies being pursued today.”

So, what might such a future Bay look like? What would it mean saying good-bye to what the “restoration” mindset lets us cling to?

I don't think anyone ever believed we could restore the Bay to "pristine" pre-colonial conditions. I do remember the goal being set to restore the Bay 70% toward that goal. But how would we measure it? No one alive remembers the Bay as it once was, and historical records are questionable.  For example, we know there were a lot of oysters, in all kinds of oyster bars that no longer exist, but we really don't know how many because they started mining them out once they discovered they could. We know the water had less nutrients, but we can't really quantify the nutrients flowing into the pristine Bay.

Sometimes the perfect is the enemy of the good.

So I just bought the Kindle version on the book (commission earned).

Rule 5 Saturday - Stuck on the Wheel of Time - Rosamund Pike

As you may know, I'm a sucker for cheap sci-fi and fantasy. And yet I was dumb struck by Amazon's announcement that they were making a series out of "Wheel of Time", Robert Jordan's Fantasy opus. If they managed to eke 8 seasons out of of Game of Thrones 6 books (and counting), what they hell would they do with 14 volumes (plus a prequel). 

Despite (or even because) of a bad review from a nephew, we sat down to binge watch the first four episodes of the new series, and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the production, and the way it stuck to the original first book "The Eye of the World", to the extent I could remember that far back. (Commission earned in the unlikely event you buy it).

The most important character so far is Moraine Aes Sedai. portrayed by Rosamund Pike:

The Wheel of Time follows Moiraine, a member of the Aes Sedai, a powerful organization of women who can use magic. She takes a group of four young people on a journey around the world, believing one of them might be the reincarnation of the Dragon, a powerful individual prophesied to either save the world or destroy it.

Sachs, who has long dismissed the COVID-19 lab leak theory, is the Chair of the Lancet journal’s Covid-19 Commission. President Joe Biden hasn’t had much luck or made much of an effort in making good on his call for unity.

But his son Hunter has.

In a new survey shared with Secrets, 68% agree that the Justice Department should appoint an independent special counsel to investigate allegations that the president’s son engaged in shady international business and tax dealings while his father was vice president. Included was the president’s brother James, whose healthcare ventures are also in the legal spotlight.

The survey from TIPP Insights is bad news for the Bidens. Not only do 85% of Republicans want a special prosecutor separate from the FBI and the Biden administration appointed, but so do 65% of Democrats and 65% of independents.

I lack confidence in the DOJ’s willingness or ability to investigate the Bidens, but this indicates that the media silencing campaign hasn’t fully succeeded despite great efforts.

More than a dozen Republican Senators, led by Sens. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Bill Hagerty of Tennessee, sent a letter on Tuesday to FBI Director Christopher Wray, urging a probe into whether a President Joe Biden’s nominee for Under Secretary of Defense for Policy disclosed or solicited classified information upon exiting the Obama administration.

Dr. Colin Kahl gave “evasive” written responses in a March 23 hearing to be Pentagon policy chief, the senators claimed, writing “an FBI investigation is warranted.”

The letter details how Kahl, former national security adviser Vice President Biden, tweeted about a Washington Post story about a military raid in Yemen in 2017. Kahl tweeted “sensitive information” about a classified National Security Council meeting that had not been reported on, the senators wrote.

The Republicans allege that Kahl also tweeted confirmed leaked and classified information pertaining to North Korea, which the Trump administration had briefed him on.

The case in question involved two Black Panthers who harassed voters outside a Philadelphia polling place. The Bush Justice Department brought a Voting Rights Act case against the pair, but prosecutors abandoned the case shortly after former president Barack Obama took office.

Video of the Panthers showed the pair shouting epithets at white voters. Witnesses testified that the Panthers threatened two African-American volunteers, Larry and Angela Counts, who were serving as paid poll workers for the GOP. The Panthers called the Counts "race traitors" and said there would be "hell to pay" when they left the polling place, according to witnesses. One of the Panthers carried a billy club.

The department's initial complaint asked a federal court to punish the New Black Panther Party in full for the actions of its two members at the Philadelphia polling place. Some civil rights litigators said that was an overreach and suggested many of the statements the Panthers made were constitutionally protected, even if they were offensive.

A federal oversight board investigated the department's decision to abandon the Panther case, including reports that Clarke, in her capacity as participation director for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, urged friendly elements in the Justice Department to drop it. In the course of that investigation, Clarke acknowledged having two contacts with department allies about the matter but claimed those conversations were not substantive.

On January 6, a joint session of Congress will open with Vice President Pence presiding as president of the Senate. His power will be plenary and unappealable. You heard that right. As president of the Senate, every objection comes directly to him, and he can rule any objection "out of order" or "denied." His task will be to fulfill his oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and to ensure that the laws be faithfully executed. This is a high standard of performance, and V.P. Pence will have two choices. He can roll over on "certified" electors, or he can uphold the law.

Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution gives state legislatures "plenary authority" as enunciated in Bush v. Gore. This is key, since the counting of votes is discussed in Article II, the 12th Amendment, and 3 USC 15. To this we must add the history of counting and objections recounted by Alexander Macris (here and here). Put bluntly, it's as clear as mud. Add to that the fact that the contested states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, New Mexico, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin have sent dueling slates of electors to D.C. This means that the V.P. has to decide how he will handle the situation when two sealed envelopes are handed to him from any of those states.

For better or worse, I don't think Pence has the stones to make that move. I'm sure he will see his role as almost completely ceremonial, although I'm sure that's not what the founders intended. They put each and every thing that's in the constitution for a reason. Note; I lost my taste for ceremonial pomp by reading the Gormenghast trilogy. Matt Margolis at PJ Media provides a Legal Memo Outlines Strategy for Trump to Succeed Having Supreme Court Hear Election Dispute

The authors of the memo contend that by refusing to hear Texas v. Pennsylvania, the Supreme Court” abdicated its constitutional duty to resolve a real and substantial controversy among states that was properly brought as an original action in that Court,” resulting in intense criticism that they had evaded “the most important inter-state constitutional case brought to it in many decades, if not ever.”

“However,” the authors say, “even in its Order dismissing the case, the Supreme Court identified how another challenge could be brought successfully — by a different plaintiff.”


Just because Texas did not persuade the Justices that what happens in Pennsylvania hurts Texas does not mean that the United States of America could not persuade the justices that when Pennsylvania violates the U.S. Constitution, it harms the nation. Article III, § 2, cl. 2 confers original jurisdiction on the Supreme Court in any case suit brought by the United States against a state. Thus, the United States can and should file suit against Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin. Like the Texas suit, that new suit would seek an order invalidating the appointment of the electors appointed by those four defendant States that refused to abide by the terms of the Presidential Electors Clause.

Olsen and McSweeney say that if this happened, it would “leave it to the state legislatures in those four states to “appoint” electors — which is what the Constitution requires. The United States suffered an injury when those four states “violated the Constitution by allowing electors who had not been appointed in the manner prescribed by the state legislature.”

Americans paying attention to the 2020 Election must be baffled by our courts. A thousand sworn statements about election wrongdoing, bizarre 4 a.m. “vote spikes” for one candidate, hundreds of thousands of ballots driven from one state to the another, counting machines with 68% error rates, etc., etc. Such claims should at least get a day in court.

Yet so far, they can’t get a sniff. With few exceptions, no state or federal court in our country has had the courage to look at the merits of these claims. The most significant challenge to our Constitutional Republic since the first Civil War can’t get a parking ticket.

I have admired Andrew McCarthy since I was a diplomat in the Middle East, and he filed the indictment against Sheikh Omar for the 1994 bombing of the World Trade Center. He has been right, and courageous, about many things in the years since then. But he is wrong about the massive election fraud in November, and especially about the Allied Security Operations Group report signed by Russ Ramsland that focuses on the role of the Dominion Voting Systems machines in Antrim County, Michigan.

In “A Whopper of An Election Rigging Claim,” McCarthy clarifies the misunderstanding about the reported 68 percent error rate. But he goes on to accuse Ramsland, wrongly, of many other errors. It seems as though McCarthy is basing his criticism on reporting in the Detroit Free Press, and he fails to understand several important matters. Let me point them out in no particular order.

Dominion Voting Systems is presently going on attack. Attorneys Thomas Clare and Megan Meier, representing Dominion, sent letters to President Donald Trump's supporters demanding that the cease making false and "defamatory" claims about the company's role in voter fraud. Their letter to Melissa Carone, dated 22 December 2020, has been posted on the internet. The letter reveals that Dominion may not be competently represented. The attorneys claim that Carone was Rudy Giuliani's "star witness" who made outlandish accusations "without a shred of corroborating evidence." Who designated Melissa Carone a "star witness"? Giuliani had several witnesses.

Trump’s last-ditch campaign will almost certainly fail in Congress. The greater danger is on the streets, where pro-Trump forces are already threatening chaos. A pro-Trump group called “Women for America First” has requested a permit for a Jan. 6 rally in Washington, and Trump is already beating the drum: “Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!”

Government officials fear that if violence spreads, Trump could invoke the Insurrection Act to mobilize the military. Then Trump might use “military capabilities” to rerun the Nov. 3 election in swing states, as suggested by Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser. Trump “could take military capabilities and he could place them in those states and basically rerun an election,” Flynn told Newsmax in a Dec. 17 interview.

Wood would have you believe that some sort of “algorithm” inside Dominion’s machines is subtracting Republican votes and adding Democratic ones. How can he and Sidney Powell prove that? Simple: All Republicans need to do is mass-boycott the Senate election on January 5, tricking the algorithm into producing impossible “negative” vote totals for Republicans in heavily Democratic areas. E.g., if the fabled algorithm is designed to automatically switch 100 votes from red to blue and only 50 Republicans turn out to vote, Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue will each get -50 negative votes in that precinct — the smoking gun that vote-stealing is going on.

 If they're cheating algorithm is that stupid, they need to hire better mathematicians and programmers.

Jon Ossoff, a Democratic Senate candidate in Georgia, hyped the reporting of Xinhua News – a Chinese Communist Party-run news outlet – with a shoutout on Twitter and has shared clips praising the advances of China’s Navy.

The unearthed remarks – occurring on Twitter in 2012 – are in addition to Ossoff’s financial ties to another Chinese state-run media company – a relationship he failed to include on financial disclosures and labeled “paperwork oversight” by his campaign.
