Ocean Wind Power and the "Dead Ocean"

Here's an interesting mechanism proposed for how ocean wind farms might be harming the environment, including starving whales. At WUWT,  NAS study raises concern over offshore wind harming endangered whales

The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) released a lengthy report on what is known as the “dead ocean” threat with a focus on the Nantucket region, specifically what are called the Nantucket shoals. This is a major feeding ground of the desperately endangered North Atlantic Right Whale. It is really a good case study for all major offshore wind installations.

The report uncovers something strange but true. The physics is technical, but the basic idea is simple. Wind turbines take a lot of the energy out of the air, creating a lower energy wake behind the wind turbine facility. Lower energy wind causes lower energy waves so there is much less mixing in the ocean surface layer. This depletes the oxygen level in the water, which can reduce the amount of living food sources that whales eat, which can harm the whales on a population level. This is why it is called the dead ocean effect.

The primary threat arises because the world’s biggest animals feed on the world’s smallest animals. Fifteen-ton Right Whales feed on what is called zooplankton, which are microscopic animals of various sorts. That these huge marine mammals can filter out and live on tons of almost invisible animals is a natural miracle in itself.

The dead ocean threat, to be even more specific, is that the reduced energy in hundreds of wind turbine wakes combined can greatly reduce the zooplankton population. This could lead to malnutrition or even starvation in the whales. It can also require the whales to do a lot more hunting for their food, which can also cause them harm. This is especially true if it increases the risk of ship strikes and fishing gear entanglements, the leading causes of whale deaths.

Fog showing wakes behind wind turbines

In fact, there are at least two very different wake effects that adversely affect whales. Note that the term wake effect often refers to the fact that the turbine sucks out roughly 50% of the energy in the air, so turbines have to be spaced far apart in the wind direction lest the first turbine rob the second of energy.

This energy-sucking effect can cause a reduction in mixing wave action far behind the turbines, which lowers the oxygen content of the water, which lowers the biological productivity, which lowers the whales’ food supply.

The second adverse effect has an opposite cause. The huge turbine blades create close in turbulence downwind, which stirs up the sediment, creating a suspended sediment plume that can be large and long-lasting. This opaque plume would certainly decrease biological activity. The lack of mixing would tend to prolong the plume. Moreover, turbulence takes energy, which further reduces downwind mixing.

What is most interesting is that these two adverse effects might cause the whales to avoid the area, like harassment does, pushing them into more dangerous waters. Thus, in addition to harassment, we now have simple avoidance as a potential cause of death.

Nantucket shoals is just East, that is, downwind, of nine major offshore wind lease areas. If these areas are developed as planned, it will create a wall of hundreds of enormous wind-sucking turbines. Each turbine removes roughly half of the energy from the wind that drives it. The stronger the wind, the more energy gets drawn out.

The primary conclusion of the NAS report is starkly simple: While the risk is clear, nothing is known about its magnitude. This is said repeatedly in carefully couched, highly technical, and very scientific language. There are numerous good recommendations that lay out the need for a research program that is sorely needed in order to understand the threat posed by offshore wind.

Needless to say, ocean wind power would have to cover a much greater extent of the ocean than it does now to have these negative effects, but that's what so-called environmentalists have planned for the future.

Stacy McCain sees the great battle as Matt Taibbi vs. the Borg

The work done by Taibbi and his “Twitter Files” colleague Michael Shellenberger in exposing the abuses of the “anti-misinformation” racket ought to be universally admired. Indeed, I would argue, it might have gotten a Pulitzer Prize were it not for the fact that the establishment media are now pro-censorship, insofar as that censorship is aimed at silencing “the far right” (i.e,, anyone who doesn’t vote Democrat) and other critics of the Biden administration. Establishment journalists generally have become “Democratic operatives with bylines,” so that questions about what is true and what is important are, in their minds, determined by the immediate interests of The Party. We see this partisan bias, for example, in discussions around Joe Biden’s fitness for office. There are lots of journalists now raising alarms about Biden’s advanced age and cognitive decline, topics they once would have dismissed as “right-wing disinformation” or “Fox New talking points.”

Why the change? Simple — polls indicate Biden would likely lose a 2024 rematch with Trump. Anything that jeopardizes Democratic Party control of the federal government is bad, according to the media hivemind, and so the idea of “pulling a Torricelli” (i.e., switching candidates to prevent a certain defeat) is now a topic the media is willing to discuss.

Rule 5 Saturday - Katherine McNamara

This week's Rule 5 subject is Katherine McNamara, former Shadowhunter, and currently Chuck Norris's (Cordell Walker's) I don't know how many times great grandmother.
Katherine McNamara (born November 22, 1995 ) is an American actress. She portrayed Clary Fray on the 2016–2019 supernatural drama television series Shadowhunters, receiving a Teen Choice Award and a People's Choice Award for her work. Since 2022, she has starred in the western action series Walker: Independence as Abby Walker, which earned her a Critics Choice Super Award for Best Actress in an Action Series nomination. She also portrayed Mia Smoak in the superhero series Arrow and starred as Julie Lawry in the post-apocalyptic miniseries The Stand
McNamara was born in Kansas City, Missouri, the only child of Ursula and Evan McNamara, who served in the U.S. military. She was raised in Lee's Summit, Missouri, and moved to Los Angeles, California in 2011.

While growing up, McNamara was an advanced student in certain subjects, resulting in her being partly homeschooled; she received her high school diploma at age 14. At age 17, McNamara graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Drexel University, completing much of her course work online. In July 2017, she said that she was enrolled in an online master's degree literature program at Johns Hopkins University.
During the course of her career, McNamara has sung songs that were used in movies or television series in which she appeared. She wrote and sang "Chatter" for Contest, and she also appeared in a music video for that song. She wrote "My Heart Can Fly", which her character sings during a talent competition in Little Savages.  She sang "Wait for You", the end credits song for A Sort of Homecoming. She also sang "Stay True", the end credits song for R.L. Stine's Monsterville: Cabinet of Souls. Her song "Ember" was played during the 20th episode of the second season of Shadowhunters.

In December 2019, McNamara was featured as the voice of singer Sally Jessup in the animated Christmas special episode of the Dreamworks series Spirit Riding Free entitled "Spirit of Christmas", which premiered on Netflix. She also provided the vocals for several songs featured in the special.

Let's Face It, Women are Just Better at Everything

Hat Hair's Dave Strom is amused by claims that a New Study PROVES That Prehistoric Women Were Superior Hunters to Men

Racism, sexism, and homophobia explain why White men are wrong about everything.

Despite being incompetent boobs who have never contributed a thing to the world, somehow, we get all the credit.

It is a miracle. The stupidest, least capable people somehow run the world with an iron fist.

The latest example of how White men have twisted reality like a pretzel is the false belief that in prehistoric times, men were generally the hunters and women the gatherers and caretakers.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Science has proven this beyond doubt.
If you envisage a prehistoric hunter, a vision of a caveman might spring to mind.

But a new study claims that these cavemen paled in comparison to their female counterparts.

While women have long been seen as child-rearers and gatherers and men as hunters, researchers from the Univeristy of Notre Dame have debunked this theory.

“Debunked.” That’s a word that carries a lot of weight. Did they find a secret video that proves this theory or perhaps some other incontrovertible evidence? Clearly, there are no written records since, by definition, “prehistoric” is pre-writing.

No, their theory is based on hormones, which give women greater endurance than men–which is, in fact, true in general.

They need it. They take care of the kids. Usually more than one at a time. Let me try to run down a deer on foot anytime. The only reason men do all the hunting is to get away from the wife and kids, right?

Flotsam and Jetsam - Email Cites Joe as Suspect, The Great DeSantis/Newsome Debate, Covid Coverup Uncorked

Evita Duffy-Alfonso at Da Fed reports Oversight Committee Releases Email From Bank Investigator Who Flagged Chinese Money Laundered Into Joe Biden’s Pocket. Jazz Shaw at Hat Hair says Imagine That: 'Unusual' Chinese Payment to Biden Flagged

The talking heads at the alphabet networks now have yet another inconvenient bit of data to either ignore or try to explain away as “not a smoking gun” in the ongoing saga of Biden Inc. I previously wrote about a shady $40,000 check that the President received from his brother Jim and his wife for our VIP subscribers and nothing about that transaction looked remotely normal. It turns out that I wasn’t the only one who had questions. A money-laundering investigator who worked for one of the banks handling the series of massive cash transfers leading to that “loan repayment” to The Big Guy quickly sent an email to his colleagues raising concerns over the strange series of transfers totaling at least five million dollars to various entities created by Hunter Biden and his business partners. He described them as “unusual” and “erratic” payments. But the investigation was apparently dropped later for some reason. (National Review)

Ace wakes up to discover Bank Investigator Blew Whistle on Chinese Payment to Hunter Biden Which Eventually Turned Into $40,000 Check for Joe Biden, Citing It As "Unusual" and a Possible Case of Influence Peddling, "10% for the Big Guy, aka A Father's Vig." At Twitchy, Catherine Herridge Drops DAMNING Email That Could Well and Truly END the Biden Crime Family (Pic)Catherine Herridge@CBS_Herridge, "Bank record from @GOPoversight probe of Hunter Biden, Biden family foreign business deals. Described as email from money laundering investigator,“payments appear erratic,” “does not appear to have any services rendered,” “no current business purpose,’ + “China target[s] children of politicians..” Hat Hair's Dave Strom is blown away that Rep. Dan Goldman insists Hunter Biden Laptop Is Not Genuine

In this particular case, what is at stake for Goldman is not any consequences for Biden–either Joe or Hunter–but the fate of the censorship complex itself. Censorship and misinformation have become a cornerstone of the Left’s strategy, which explains their obsession with Elon Musk and Twitter/X. One of the most notorious examples of how censorship was used to manipulate the political process is the censorship of the New York Post’s story on the laptop, which was predicated on the idea that it was Russian disinformation.

It wasn’t, of course, and it is important to maintain the plausibility of the claim that it was. If a consensus develops that Twitter, Facebook, and the MSM shut down the dissemination of that information just before the 2020 election, it becomes indisputable that the election was rigged not just by social media companies but by intelligence officials, government-funded NGOs, and other media outlets who spread lies to muddy the waters.

So Goldman maintains the fiction that the laptop was faked. Everybody in the room knows he is lying, just as everybody knows because it is documented that social media companies agreed to government demands to censor other true but inconvenient information. The entire COVID communication strategy was predicated on spreading falsehoods (see my earlier column today for just one example).

At Da Wire, Federal Air Marshals Diverted From Sensitive Flights To Follow January 6 Suspects, Officials Say. Not even suspects, just random people who flew into DC prior to Jan. 6:

They said that in one case, because the wife of an air marshal was in D.C. on January 6 — but never went to the Capitol — FAMS began following her on flights. Since she was usually traveling with her husband, that meant one air marshal was assigned to fly on a plane to monitor another air marshal. “You can imagine the scene” when the husband had to introduce himself to the air marshal who was following him to explain, as required, that he was carrying his weapon onboard, the letter said.

In one such flight, the assigned air marshal told the husband that he was “originally scheduled for a high-risk international mission,” but that mission went uncovered because he was monitoring the wife of a colleague, the letter said.

The husband was able to see in TSA’s computer system that his wife was classified as a “Domestic Terrorist,” and she remained so two years later, even though she has never been arrested or even questioned about the Capitol protest, which she did not participate in, the letter said.

The wife “is not alone. We have been hearing many similar stories from our FAM membership about being assigned to surveil people that TSA/FAMS labeled domestic terrorists, specifically due to being in D.C. on or about January 6th,” it continued.
