Rule 5 Saturday - Kalani Hilliker

This week's Rule 5 winner is:
Kalani Brooke Hilliker (born September 23, 2000) is an American dancer and actress. She rose to fame in 2013 as a contestant on the Lifetime reality series Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition and subsequently appeared on Dance Moms, becoming a regular cast member from 2014 to 2017.
Hilliker was born on September 23, 2000, in Mesa, Arizona to Kira Girard (née Salazar) and Matthew Hilliker.  In October 2019, Hilliker moved to Los Angeles. However, in January 2021, she announced on her YouTube channel that she left L.A. for Scottsdale, Arizona. Hilliker started dancing at the age of two. Her mother initially enrolled her in dance classes because she thought it would be fun to dress her daughter up. Hilliker started training at Club Dance in Mesa at age 5. As a child, she was an avid soccer player, but decided to pursue dance more committedly around age 9 and got an agent

In July 2020, Hilliker was photographed with a Blue Lives Matter flag. Then, in November 2020, she publicly announced that she would be supporting Donald Trump's presidential campaign in the 2020 United States presidential election.

Beach Report 7/28/23

Another hot one, about 86, without Georgia and Skye. An inconsistent west breeze helped some, but the shade afforded by the cliffs helped more. Do you see the Great Blue Heron?
It was a good low tide, and there was a lot of gravel and shell exposed.
Nothing really unusual today among the 20 teeth I found, but this really fine 1 1/4 inch Snaggletooth was lying in shallow water.
It's hard to see, but a V22 Osprey flew past.

Chesapeake Bay National Recreation Area Comes Closer

Da Balmer Sun, Van Hollen, Sarbanes introduce legislation to create Chesapeake National Recreation Area

Members of Maryland’s congressional delegation have introduced legislation to establish a Chesapeake National Recreation Area that would include several historical landmarks around Annapolis.

The Chesapeake National Recreation Area Act, sponsored by Democrats U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen and U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes, would establish the area with headquarters in Annapolis and in Hampton, Virginia.

Burtis House

“Think of the really important geographic historic landmarks we associate with the National Park Service. The Chesapeake Bay belongs in that category. It’s a national treasure, and it should be designated that way,” Van Hollen told The Baltimore Sun on Thursday. “If we get this national recreation status, it will bring with it the assets of the National Park Service. That means park rangers and more national park personnel and programs.”

The legislation would enable the park service to provide staff and programs at a trio of Annapolis landmarks — the Burtis House, a 19th-century cottage next to the Annapolis City Dock where Captain William Henry Burtis rented fishing boats; Whitehall, an 18th-century mansion first occupied by British colonial officers, and the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, built in 1875 near the mouth of the South River. It is the last screw-pile lighthouse on the bay in its original location.

I've fished at the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse a few times with Pete. A great spot in summer, if you can get there before the Annapolis crowd. The cottage and mansion don't excite me that much.

The city of Annapolis acquired the Burtis House in 2020, while Whitehall is a private wedding venue. The lighthouse is operated by the The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park. According to Van Hollen’s office, the owners or managers of the sites have expressed interest in being included as initial sites in the recreation area. The legislation would allow the park service to acquire the landmarks, as well as any other potential sites through purchase, a donation or a partnership with the existing owners.

The recreation area would also include the North Beach adjacent to the Fort Monroe National Monument on the bay in Hampton, according to Van Hollen’s office. In 1619, the first enslaved Africans in mainland American colonies were brought to the site.
Ft. Monroe National Monument
The idea for a Chesapeake National Recreation Area, a different distinction than a national park, was first brought up in the 1980s in a commentary in The Capital by then-Anne Arundel County Executive Jim Lighthizer, according to a news release from Van Hollen’s office.

The legislation does not specify funding amounts from the federal budget for the recreation area. It would not allow the National Park Service to supersede state authority in fish and wildlife management efforts or acquire property from unwilling landowners.

That makes me feel a little better. But it is the camel's nose.

“The Chesapeake Bay is as spectacular as Yellowstone or Yosemite, as great as the Great Smokies and as grand as the Grand Tetons. Establishing the Chesapeake National Recreation Area expands resources for environmental protection, and makes it clear that the United States cherishes the Chesapeake, the birthplace of American identity,” Chesapeake Conservancy President & CEO Joel Dunn said in a news release.

Too hot for Skye today, 93 F and Georgia was babysitting so it was just me.

A puzzler. If it was the Potomac, it might be an Odotus, Megalodon's ancestor, but here? I am asking the pros.

Update, the pros say Cretalamna appendiculata, the extinct Mackerel Shark from the Cretaceous era, which is not the age of our sediments (Miocene). They claim it was either planted, or "reworked", from eroded sediments mixed in the newer sediments. I doubt the planted story, given where it was found, and that it has clay in some crevices.

Flotsam and Jetsam - Hunter Plea Deal Self-Detonates in Courtroom

There's really only one story, but first, from the Sun a Flood of Incriminating Disclosures About Hunter Biden’s Business Dealings, Including Allegations That His Father Was Involved, Could Threaten ‘Sweetheart’ Plea Deal, "Hunter Biden’s former close friend, Devon Archer, is expected to testify next week that President Biden joined his son for multiple meetings with clients " and  Michael Goodwin at NYPo, a plea, Judge must nix Hunter Biden’s plea deal to show her court won’t approve a blatant miscarriage of justice. Ask and ye shall receive. Judge Maryellen Norieka asked a few simple questions from both sides that quickly revealed that, while the Feds were (allegedly) continuing to look into Hunter, with the possibility of charging him with, oh say, FARA violations later, the defense maintained that the deal gave Hunter full immunity from any crimes, and that the deal was allegedly binding on the judge and put to onus of enforcing it on her. When the Feds said that deal did not cover other potential crimes, the Defense declared the deal off, and after a certain amount of trying to put Humpty-Dumpty back together, the deal was still off, and the judge gave them 30 days to try to reach a new deal. Meanwhile, the Congress will continue to dredge up and publicize new material that DOJ either refused to consider or has been actively covering up. I would also suppose this puts U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware Weiss' planned testimony to Congress off indefinitely, as well. " Also "Judge Noreika stunned the participants with her scouring skepticism.... 'You all are saying, "Just rubber stamp the agreement"'...."

"Judge Noreika quickly zeroed in on a central component of the deal, a paragraph offering Hunter Biden broad immunity from prosecution, in perpetuity, for a range of matters scrutinized by the Justice Department during its five-year investigation. The judge, appointed by former President Donald J. Trump in 2017, questioned why prosecutors had written it in a way that gave her no legal authority to reject it. Then, in 10 minutes of incisive questioning, she exposed serious differences between the two sides on what, exactly, that paragraph meant....

Hammack started playing music at age 13. While not getting much of a music education or vocal lessons at a young age, she self-taught by listening and singing songs on the country radio. The first time she had to turn down potential tennis scholarships was at age 15, after a surgery to remove a tumor. She wrote her first song, "Addictive", about the pain pills she had to take after the surgery.

While her brother played Southern rock and her sister Britney Spears songs, she discovered the country genre for herself and counts Dixie Chicks and the SHeDAISY as her early inspirations.
She received a full music scholarship to Belmont University in Nashville at age 18, but declined because her boyfriend persuaded her to stay in Ellaville with him. After she broke up with her boyfriend and was noticed by Luke Bryan, she moved to Nashville at the end of 2013 with about $1,000 of savings, a high school diploma, and her clothes in trash bags. She ran out of money and slept in her car. With a fake ID, she entered the music venues and bars and, after asking a bass player at the Honky Tonk Central on Broadway, she started to sing cover versions there weekly.  Before signing a recording contract, she performed several original songs, including "Redhead".

Pennsylvania to Get $25M for Cow Farts

WESA (Pittsburgh) Penn State study aims to help Pa. dairy farmers cut methane — and show carbon offsets are real

A team at Penn State received a $25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to study reduction in dairy farm methane emissions by using what the agency calls “climate-smart” practices.

The research will include 70 farms across Pennsylvania that will be selected with help from the Center for Dairy Excellence, a nonprofit created by the state agriculture department. Those will include farms of various sizes and owned by underrepresented groups to help identify methods that work best for them.

The goal is to provide measurable reductions in methane emissions from cows. Methane is a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

The reductions can be used as carbon credits in the products the farms produce. The credits could be used by companies or retailers purchasing the products as a means to meet their climate goals.

According to Dr. Katherine Zipp, an associate professor of environmental and resource economics at Penn State, there is market potential for this. “Consumers have shown that they’re willing to pay for carbon offsets,” she said.

Jayne Sebright, the executive director at the Center, notes dairy farmers are interested in using methods that could cut emissions. “It’ll impact these farms significantly in helping them meet that challenge of becoming climate-smart farms, like, really mitigating their carbon footprint,” she said.
