Maryland, My Maryland

From the Free Bacon, ‘We’re Not Criminalizing the Unhoused’: How a Homeless Encampment and Drug Dealers Are Destroying a Local Condominium Complex and Turning Its Residents’ Lives Upside Down

The sign outside the Marylander Condominiums, a 200-unit complex in Prince George’s County, Md., describes it as a "private community."

But for members of a homeless encampment in the condo’s backyard, the complex also serves as a crackhouse, a bathroom, and the entrance to an open-air drug market, which has become a magnet for organized crime and caused millions in property damage.

Transients break into buildings and smoke crack in the stairwells. Tenants traversing the property must navigate needles, feces, and sleeping bodies as addicts nap half-naked in the hallways and sprawl themselves like welcome mats outside residents’ doors.

Half of the complex has gone without heat since Thanksgiving after vagrants allegedly vandalized the boiler room, causing pipes to burst in several buildings. Some units have lost electricity, too, due to the overuse of space heaters. Though the county instructed those without heat to "vacate immediately" in December, most have defied the order and tried to weather the cold. They say they have nowhere else to go. . . .

Long and short?  "Prince George’s County, Md, is going to court to evict legal residents over damage allegedly caused by the camp."

Flotsam and Jetsam - Lindsey Vonn Crashes Out

The most conspicuous news of the day was American skier, gold medal winner 41 year old Lindsey Vonn crashed out of her attempt to win the women's downhill race at the Milan/Cortina Olympics, and had to be airlifted out. Reports are she needed emergency surgery. I was on a bathroom break during Lindsey's run and missed it live, but suspect it will be rerun many times. It's quite likely an unfortunate end to a long, successful athletic carrier, but plagued with injuries. The event was eventually won by fellow American skier Breezy Johnson. David Manney at PJM on Lindsey Vonn’s Crash and the Brutal Truth About Olympic Risk. "Mountains don't care about medals or legacy; they respond only with gravity, speed, and error." A YouTube of the crash is on the post. Althouse on the trivial, Aging is sad in a new way now.

Breezy Johnson
So, yeah, she grew up. Kids do that. Modelling became part of her life. Changed her hair color, had professional makeup, maybe even had some "work" done, (I mean other than all her leg surgery). Her face looks thinner, but then I am reminded of Catherine Deneuve's famous quote: "At a certain age, you have to choose between your face and your ass." I don't think competitive downhill skiers have much choice. Many are criticizing Lindsey for taking the spot on the Olympic team and even making the run after an ACL injury a few days before. Not I. Ultimately the Olympics are about individual accomplishment. She won her spot on the team fairly, and was trying her best when she failed. You can't ask more. At Breitbart, Team USA Olympic Skiers ‘Heartbroken,’ Say They Don’t Represent ICE Operations by Wearing American Flag “I feel heartbroken about what’s happened in the United States ….. As some TV pundit pointed out last night, reporters didn't run around asking athletes if they supported the US during the Biden, Obama or Clinton administrations. Stupid politics from someone who has spent their whole life running down mountains is to be expected.

Super Bowl LX

My prediction, Seattle by 3 in overtime. Not because I have any special insight or particularly care about either team, but because it seems to me, more and more games are being decided in the last few seconds by a field goal in the last few seconds. UPDATE: I was wrong. Super Bowl 2026 live updates: Seahawks defeat Patriots 29-13.

WUWT, Climate Scientist Who Predicted End Of “Heavy Frost and Snow” Now Refuses Media Inquiries

More than two decades ago, renowned climate scientist Mojib Latif of Germany’s Max Planck Instiute for Meterology, based in Hamburg, warned the climate-ambulance chasing Der Spiegel that, due to global warming, Germany would likely no longer experience harsh winters with heavy frost and snow as it had in previous decades.

Spiegel reported climate scientist’s prediction of harsh winters disappearing due to man’s activities.

In light of the current severe winter weather in Germany, Latif’s statements are facing renewed scrutiny. An article appearing in the Berliner Zeitung here notes that Latif’s prophecy has “aged poorly” and he appears to want to have nothing to do with them.

According to the Berliner Zeitung, the former Max Planck Institute scientist has recently stopped responding to media inquiries regarding his past claims. Critics argue that such drastic predictions damage the credibility of climate science, while others point out that extreme weather events—including intense cold snaps—can still occur within the broader context of climate change.

Latif also claimed he recalled snow in the past occurring at Easter time, implying this no longer happens today. But that too was a false claim. perhaps prof. Latif will answer phone calls in April?

We still have plenty of "snowcrete" on the ground after the storm on Jan. 25, since only a few days since then has the temperature ventured above freezing, and then, only for an hour or so. This makes it a remarkably cold winter by Slower Maryland standards.

Random Celebrity News

For the usual values of random, celebrity and news. First, at Breitbart, Former Gymnast Slams ACLU Trans Ad with Megan Rapinoe: ‘Sports Are Not About Inclusion’

Former gymnast Jennifer Sey rebuked the ACLU and Megan Rapinoe after the organization posted a video supporting delusional males who believe they have a right to women’s sports and spaces. . . .Sey, who is a USA National artistic gymnastics champion and the founder of XX-XY Athletics, an activewear company that advocates for protecting women’s sports and spaces, told Fox News Digital the video made her “so angry.”

“Sports aren’t about any of those things. Sports are about competition. Sports are not about inclusion. Not everybody makes the team,” Sey told the outlet. “Sports are competing and striving to get better, and it’s about self-reliance and picking yourself up when you fall down. They’re not about freedom. There’s rules in sports. Three strikes and you’re out,” she added. “There’s rules across every single sport. So I don’t know what these people are talking about, and to make it about this idea that sports aren’t about competition.”

Sey went on to say that males have biological advantages over women that are greater than performance-enhancing drugs, and said she believes Rapinoe would have wanted a fair playing field during her soccer career.  “Megan Rapinoe has to be one of the most competitive women on the planet. She was on Olympic teams and World Cup teams. She’s one of the most famous soccer players ever. She’s full of it. It just makes me angry, and she’s pulling up the ladder behind her,” Sey said. “And I’m sure she would not have tolerated a single player taking performance-enhancing drugs because that provides an unfair advantage.”

At Althouse,  That can't feel good. Attention gained, mission accomplished.

"Her custom negligee dress and matching cape were crafted in silk georgette in a deep red garnet. But once Roan removed the cape, the result was a naked dress that seemingly exposed her breasts, with the silk georgette suspended by nipple rings."

I'm reading "Chappell Roan’s Naked Dress at Grammys Shocks Social Media/The double Grammy nominee created what was arguably the night's first viral moment when she turned up in a sheer look by Mugler" (Hollywood Reporter).

Congratulations on getting attention. It's quite a look, and it kind of looks good. But I'm just worried about that kind of weight suspended from pierced nipples. You're treating your breasts like hooks on the back of a bathroom door, things to hang clothing on.

Here's a closeup (on X) that highlights the pulling. It's not just an illusion that the whole bottom of the dress is hanging from those nipple rings. You can see the distortion from the weight. You can see the risk of injury. The viewer is drawn into the experience of pain and danger. Who is that for?

PJM's Mike Cantrell hears Nicki Minaj Calls Out Christian Voters Supporting Democrats After Minnesota Church Chaos

In a post on X following the Grammys, Minaj wrote, “Any Christian who votes democrat again is a fool. They’re showing people that it’s ok to disrupt a church during worship. This is how they truly feel about you. The veil is lifted. No morals. No integrity. It’s not enough for them to have an opinion, they’ve escalated to physical intrusion of places of worship. The demons inside of them are so bothered. All the time.”

Grammy host Trevor Noah — perhaps one of the least funny people in Hollywood, even worse than Stephen Colbert — took shots at Minaj and her recent expression of admiration for President Donald Trump. Keep in mind, Noah left hosting Comedy Central’s Daily Show after the program lost 75% of its viewership.

“Nicki Minaj is not here,” Noah said during the broadcast. “She is still at the White House with Donald Trump discussing very important issues.” Queer artist and actor Billy Porter also slammed Minaj during a red-carpet interview, bluntly saying, “f**k her.”

Minaj, much like the president, does not sit back on her haunches when critics unfairly target and attack her. Much to the chagrin of the left, she punches back — hard. The rapper tore into Noah, referring to him as a closeted gay man and saying, “Trevor refuses to come out the closet when everyone in the industry knows his boyfriend. Allegedly.”

Flotsam and Jetsam - Dow Hits 50K, Benghazi Mastermind Captured, But the White House Reposted a Mean Video

After a few day without much issues of interest for the title, I find myself blessed with too many. First, yesterday the Dow Jones industrial Average, for some reason considered a benchmark for the stock market, first crossed 50k and ended at 50,156. In the immortal words of Robert Reich after the first election of Donald Trump, when asked when the stock market would recover, he said “If the question is when markets will recover, a first-pass answer is never.” Our 403Bs are looking pretty healthy. ""i can’t imagine a parent who wouldn’t sell little JD for percocet if they knew he would turn out like this/to be a bit serious one irony of vance’s life is that he is also an addict: addicted to power and clearly willing to sell anything to get it" Writes NYT columnist Jamelle Bouie, at Blue Sky, commenting on this video showing JD Vance declining to entertain hypotheticals about Alex Pretti." Lauren Chen @TheLaurenChen, "Imagine having 90% less violent crime. We could literally do it. But unfortunately, it would require upsetting the neurotic women and effeminate men who are active on Bluesky. So I guess we just have to deal with the violent crime." Jerry Dunleavy IV @JerryDunleavy, "I regret to inform you that, after being clowned on, “Headquarters 67” is now “Headquarters 68.” Unfortunately I can now predict where this is going. From Althouse, Ella Emhoff, step-daughter of Kamala Harris, has been on SSRIs for 15 years, and she has some questions. "I don't know if this is something that I feel like is being talked about enough." I do feel a little sorry for the children of politicians.

From Twitchy, So It BEGINS! Ilhan Omar Will Absolutely FLIP OUT When She Sees What James Comer JUST Dropped. Rep. James Comer @RepJamesComer, "NEW I’m demanding financial information from companies linked to Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar’s husband. A Temple University student has now surrendered on federal charges admitting he helped Don Lemon with logistics and local contacts ahead of that anti-ICE protest — Court records and social media posts show Richardson describing himself as assisting Don Lemon in the days leading up to the protest — Prosecutors say this new arrest undercuts that defense, suggesting planning and not just passive coverage.”" Capt. Shipwreckedcrew explores the question Is A Warrantless Entry Into A Residence To Take Custody Of An Illegal Alien Really A Violation Of The Fourth Amendment?? "The default of the legal academy is that entries into the home by police must be authorized by a neutral magistrate based upon a finding of "probable cause" -- but I'm not sure that's true." Shipwreckedcrew @shipwreckedcrew, ""What process is due?" Two factual issues: 1. Enter the U.S. without inspection. 2. Remain in U.S. without status. No equitable issues to consider. 99% of outcomes are removals. Congress intended the process to run by Regulation. If Congress doesn't like the Regulation it can change it." Quote Aaron Reichlin-Melnick @ReichlinMelnick, "HOLY CRAP. The Trump admin just took a SLEDGEHAMMER to due process, largely eliminating the Board of Immigration Appeals process and MANDATING DISMISSAL of ALL appeals (which cost $1,000 thanks to OBBBA) filed after March 9 unless a majority of the BIA votes to hear the case." Jonathan Turley, Police Thwart Alleged Assassination of OMB Director Russell Vought "What is most chilling is how Demarco parroted the talking points of Democratic leaders in justifying the assassination. One Short Word in AOC's WaPo Layoffs Take Gives Away How Dems View the Media: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez @RepAOC, "When Jeff Bezos bought WaPo, he immediately took control of the opinions section. Now, he's laying off hundreds of journalists, including those covering Amazon. This isn’t a coincidence. It’s the result of billionaires with vested political agendas taking over our media." 'Our media' Joel Berry @JoelWBerry, "I live in the Midwest. Complete devastation for an entire close-knit community. No tears, no 4,000-word eulogies in WaPo, no hyperventilating on Twitter. Anonymous suffering, broken families, people forced to uproot their lives just to survive. The overeducated, overpaid, overvalued, overprivileged activists-disguised-as-journalists who spent years whipping up climate hysteria and fomenting racial division while destroying the reputation of a once-great American newspaper have no idea what devastation looks like. Sonny Jurgensen, the Hall of Fame quarterback whose strong arm led to passing records for the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders and affable personality made him a beloved figure, has died at the age of 91. ESPN was on in the locker room of the gym this afternoon, and I watched the newsreader discussing Jurgensen’s pro career by uttering something like “his time playing football in Washington,” as a way to avoid the R-word entirely.
