Call Roto-Rooter!

That's the name and away go troubles down the drain! DC Water, DC Water Identifies Significant Rock Blockage in Potomac Interceptor, Impacting Cleaning and Repair Timeline

Overnight CCTV inspection of the Potomac Interceptor revealed the blockage inside the collapsed sewer line is far more significant, showing a large rock dam stretching approximately 30 feet downstream of the original failure. The unexpected discovery exposed the severity of the obstruction and prompted an immediate reassessment that will extend the timeline for cleaning and repairs.

It’s expected to take an estimated 4-6 weeks of additional time to get a system in place that will add more, larger bypass pumps in a new location and stabilize the site for heavy machinery to safely begin removing the large rocks and boulders inside the sewer line. While the existing bypass system has mostly contained overflows, more pumps are needed to further reduce the remaining flow getting through the pipe. A bulkhead will then be installed upstream of the failure to block the pipe and limit the wastewater reaching the collapse site.

A section of the sewer line collapsed January 19, along Clara Barton Parkway and the 495 interchange and the C & O Canal National Historical Park, causing an estimated 40 million gallons a day of wastewater to escape and enter the Potomac River.

Standard cleaning methods using industrial vacuums and jets are not sufficient to remove these large boulders. Addressing this blockage will require both larger machinery and manual labor. Workers will need to safely enter the pipe, use slings to maneuver around the rocks, and then rely on heavy equipment to extract each boulder, making removal a complex and highly specialized operation.

The large rocks blocking the pipe were likely excavated during original construction in the 1960’s and used as backfill. When the failure occurred, this material collapsed into the interceptor drawn in by the force of wastewater flow, eventually accumulating and creating this rock dam. Additional rock and soil entered the pipe as surrounding material eroded into the sinkhole created by the collapse.

To facilitate this work, DC Water will construct a new large pit upstream of the collapse to access the existing sewer line and install new, high-capacity pumps. Five more pumps—coming from Florida and Texas—will increase the pumps on site to 13 and increase capacity to more than 100 million gallons per day, allowing us to temporarily divert wastewater and keep the site as dry as possible for safe rock removal.

That sounds to me like they need to stand back and let the dirty-job guys with the big toys get to work, and then thank them profusely when they fix the sewer that take their shit away,

Maryland, My Maryland

From the Free Bacon, Wes Moore Says the KKK Chased His Great-Grandfather Out of South Carolina. Historical Records Tell a Different Story. "Moore's great-grandfather preached at a South Carolina church held in high regard by the white community, before he was transferred to Jamaica to succeed a prominent pastor who had unexpectedly died."

Maryland governor Wes Moore, who is widely expected to seek the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, has a powerful family story of racial injustice that he repeatedly tells during public speeches: His grandfather, as a small boy, fled 1920s Charleston with his family in the dead of night after his father—a prominent black minister and Moore's great-grandfather—angered the Ku Klux Klan with sermons condemning racism. Narrowly escaping a lynching, the family took refuge in Jamaica. But Moore's grandfather, just six years old at the time, vowed to return to America, where he eventually raised a grandson who made history in 2022 by becoming Maryland's first black governor.

It's a story straight out of Hollywood, and it was a central feature of Moore's 2022 campaign stump speech, in which he described a version of American patriotism wherein "loving your country does not mean lying about its history." Moore first told the tale of his exiled grandfather in a 2014 memoir and has since retold it countless times as he seeks to reclaim patriotism for the Democratic Party and to contextualize his own unlikely rise to power.

But there's a problem with Moore's story: It's flatly contradicted by historical records and is almost certainly false.

Moore's great-grandfather on his mother's side, the Rev. Josiah Johnson Thomas, did preach in the 1920s at a church in Pineville, S.C., about 65 miles north of Charleston. But historical records housed at the archives of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of South Carolina undercut the three main elements of Moore's story—that Thomas suddenly fled the country in secret, that he was targeted by the Ku Klux Klan, and that he was a prominent preacher who spoke from the pulpit against racism.

Detailed church archival records, as well as contemporary newspaper coverage, indicate that Thomas, a Jamaica native, on Dec. 13, 1924, made an orderly and public transfer from South Carolina to the island of his birth, where he was appointed to succeed a prominent Jamaican pastor who had died unexpectedly a week earlier, on Dec. 6, 1924. Amid the copious documentation of the life and career of Moore's great-grandfather, there is no mention of trouble with the Klan, which operated openly in 1920s South Carolina but never had a chapter operating out of Pineville, according to Virginia Commonwealth University's Mapping of the Second Ku Klux Klan.

Many families tell larger-than-life stories about their forebears that wouldn't hold up to scrutiny. But your typical family-tree fabulist isn't preparing to run for president. And Moore's fantastical tale of his great-grandfather's escape from the Ku Klux Klan to exile to Jamaica adds yet another asterisk to his remarkably inflated résumé—about which the press have asked him very little.

Moore falsely claimed that he was born and grew up in Baltimore, which he did not; that he was inducted into the Maryland College Football Hall of Fame, an organization that doesn't exist; that he received a Bronze Star for his service in Afghanistan, which he had not; that in 2006 he was considered a foremost expert on radical Islam based on his graduate thesis, which he never submitted to Oxford University's library and can no longer locate; that he was a doctoral candidate at Oxford in 2006, a claim he has no documentation to support and on which Oxford refuses to comment; and that he had "a difficult childhood in the Bronx and Baltimore" despite attending New York City's elite, private Riverdale Country School—where John F. Kennedy went to school—as a child and not living in Baltimore until college, when he attended Johns Hopkins University, another elite private school.

But you're racist if you question the stories.

When Bezos announce an attitude shift (which I haven't see, it seems more like they doubledowned) at the Poo, the writers and editorial staff started rooting for unsubscribers. What did they think was going to happen. FWIW, we've had a subscription to the post since we arrived in MD in 1985, IIRC. Tattoo Thursday

TATTOOS are the love language of Brooklyn Beckham. With about 110 etchings sprawled across his body, inked-in words of affirmation are how he likes to express himself.

How utterly wounding, both literally and figuratively, it is then to learn the 26-year-old has intentionally covered up tributes to his father David. This, quite evidently, is a wound that runs deep. Having already tattooed over “Mama’s boy”, now it is the turn of his once-beloved dad to be erased from pigmented history. And my God, this will hurt family man Becks.
. . .
To rub salt into the still-drying wound, approximately 73 of his 110 tatts are dedicated to his US wife Nicola Peltz.
At the high cost and trouble to remove tattoos he better be planning to keep her.

Cities Have the Rock Salt Blues

You can tell when they've finished getting the streets clear in major cities. They start nagging about all the salt that was used on the roads. NBC 4 Wash,  Anacostia River contamination concerns come as snow piles grow

As D.C. scoops up snow and ice to clear streets and dumps much of it on mounds in four parking lots around the city, concerns are raised about the environmental impact on local waterways.

Construction vehicles dump the snow into large trucks that take it to parking lots at Carter Barron Amphitheater near Rock Creek Park, the old United Medical Center and two lots at the old RFK Stadium site. About 1,000 loads of the so-nicknamed “snowcrete” have piled up so far.

But near RFK flows one of those environmental concerns: the Anacostia River. “Looks filthy, and all of that black stuff, it isn't dirt, right,” Anacostia Riverkeeper Trey Sherard said. “A lot of that black stuff is little, microscopic bits of tires. It's all the things that we added into the tires.”

“You've got trash, you've got salt, you've got unmitigated dog waste, and they're gonna be in all of these ice piles,” he said. “And it's going straight into the Anacostia River from here.”  One of his biggest concerns is all the salt that could drain into the Anacostia as the ice melts.

Bear in minds, all the rest of that stuff runs off the streets and into the river the next time it rains anyway. And while they always cite salt a potential toxic, they never list  what organisms they are concerned about.

WRICH Richmond, As snow melts, Virginia lawmakers seek alternatives and awareness to road salt. Hey, the sun will do it. You just have to wait a little longer.

WTOP, Slightly salty water could come out of your faucet soon in these Maryland suburbs “Eventually, it’s going to wash down the storm drains. It’s going to make its way into the creeks, the streams, the rivers, our source water,” Riggins said, adding that WSSC Water regularly tests the water and it’s safe to drink. Riggins said most people likely won’t notice the saltier taste."

I was going to save this for "random celebrity news", but it blew up yesterday: Breaking911 @Breaking911, ""Billie Eilish at the Grammys: "Nobody is illegal on stolen land. We need to keep fighting and speaking up. Our voices do matter...f*ck ICE."" Kind of cold, no thanks. James Lindsay, anti-Communist @ConceptualJames, "Let's talk about the opening part of this statement: "nobody is illegal on stolen land." We can break it down, but we should also know what it
is. What we are looking at is Chinese-style political sloganeering called "tifa" (提法). Communist communications ever since Mao took over China (and the CCP before that) almost always follow this kind of formulation, called 提法 (tífǎ), which literally translates as "watchwords" or "slogans." Literally, it means to lift up or present or highlight the core message or political principle in play through a charged slogan. . . . " But Metro remembers Billie Eilish gets permanent restraining order against man who repeatedly turned up to her home. A little casual hypocrisy is common in celebrities, as well a most humans.

From NYPO, Native American tribe that owns land under Billie Eilish’s LA mansion has message for virtue-signaling singer "Eilish has not contacted our tribe directly regarding her property, we do value the instance when public figures provide visibility to the true history of this country,” a Tongva spokesperson told the Daily Mail. “It is our hope that in future discussions, the tribe can explicitly be referenced to ensure the public understands that the greater Los Angeles Basin remains Gabrieleno Tongva territory,” the spokesperson added." Insty says THIS IS THE MOST ENTERTAINING TIMELINE: Clay Travis @ClayTravis, "A Native American tribe says that Billie Eilish’s mansion is on their stolen land. She must immediately hand title to her mansion over to the tribe and move. She stole their land. Unacceptable." Quote End Wokeness @EndWokeness, "BREAKING: Tongva Tribe says Billie Eilish is living in a mansion built on "ancestral land" taken from them." And has A QUESTION THAT ALL BLUE STATE PROPERTY OWNERS SHOULD BE ASKING: The Drunk Republican @DrunkRepub, "If I’m on stolen land why the F am I paying property taxes?" CSPAN @cspan, "@SenTedCruz: "Are we right now on stolen land?" Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos: "I have no idea of the history of this land." Warner Bros. Discovery exec Bruce Campbell: "Nor do I."  Balmer Sun, Planned ICE detention center in Howard County gets permit revoked

Howard County government revoked a building permit Monday that had been issued for a planned federal immigration detention facility in Elkridge, County Executive Calvin Ball announced Monday.

The detention center has been under construction in a former warehouse building in an office park at 6522 Meadowridge Road in Elkridge, according to Ball, who proposed emergency legislation late Friday to block permitting in the county for privately owned buildings to operate as detention centers.

Across from the proposed detention facility is the isolated Meadowridge Landing, a shopping square with a liquor store, a laundromat and a variety of food spots. A quiet residential neighborhood is tucked just behind the shopping center, and Ball said, within a mile radius are several schools, health care facilities and other entities that raise concerns about community safety with such a facility nearby.

Ball’s emergency legislation, co-sponsored by Democratic council members Opel Jones, Christianna Rigby, Liz Walsh, and Deb Jung, is set to be read Monday night at a County Council legislative meeting. The bill would prohibit permitting for privately owned buildings that are operating as detention centers in Howard County.

The first step is for four of the five council members to approve placing the emergency bill on their agenda. If approved, a public hearing on the bill would be set for Wednesday.
