Russian Instagram superstar Yulia Kanakina will make her Olympic skeleton debut Friday when the competition gets rolling at the Yanqing National Sliding Centre. Kanakina, who is being billed as the “most beautiful” Beijing Olympics competitor by European tabloids, is a former ballet dancer who is now rocketing down an ice track at 80 miles per hour.

The 26-year-old from Krasnoyarsk, Russia says she had dreams of being a ballerina and then one day she ended up on a skeleton track.

“On my first descent in the skeleton, I rode and squealed. It was very scary, I thought, ‘That’s it! Never again, no way!’” she told Russian outlets.

 

In 2020, Kanakina told Sport24.com that her skeleton career began after being recruited out of her PE class by a coach.

“He was recruiting children to compete in the Youth Olympic Games and asked the teacher which of us was the fastest runner. And I always, compared to others, managed to run fast, despite the fact that I did ballet and gymnastics. That’s why they recommended me,” she recalled.

“They called me, briefly told me what kind of sport, what event was planned, they said that I could try and that I might succeed. Well, I’m on my own wave: “No, no, thanks, I’m doing ballet and I don’t want to change anything, everything suits me.” I came home, and only about two days later I told my mother and stepfather this story. And mom asks: “Do you want to try?” 

And now she’s preparing to make her debut for Team Russia as one of the country’s most recognizable faces due to her Instagram fame that has attracted the likes of Reebok as one of her sponsors.

Kanakina told Sport24 that flying down the skeleton track feels like being in slow-motion.

“I don’t know how to call that feeling when you go to competitions. Sometimes in training it seems that it’s unrealistically fast, you think that’s it, she broke the world record. You arrive, and time is slow,” she said of her life as a skeleton racer. “And you don’t understand why. You drive, it seems to you that you have accelerated faster than anyone else on the planet, but in fact the time is such a thing.”

Dang it, it's done. She scored 11th, with time 2.47 secs behind the winner, Hannah Neise of the Netherlands. Maybe they'll show it tonight.

Skeleton looks like it would be one of those sports it would be fun to try; on a short, safe track the first time.

At NYPo, Female ski jumpers disqualified over baggy clothing at 2022 Olympics: ‘Destroyed’ the sport

Five female ski jumpers representing Austria, Japan, Norway (twice) and Germany were disqualified from the competition for wearing loose-fitting suits. According to news.com.au, it was determined that the clothing could give athletes an advantage while in the air.

After Germany’s Katharina Althaus was disqualified in the first round, she was brought to tears and accused the International Ski Federation (FIS) of “destroying” and “damaging” women’s ski jumping.

“I have been checked so many times in 11 years of ski jumping, and I have never been disqualified once, I know my suit was compliant,” Althaus wrote in a post on Instagram.

“160 World Cup starts, 5x World Championships, 3x Olympic Games and I got DSQ for the first time. My heart is broken.”

Anna Odine Strøm, one of the Norwegians disqualified, said officials had used a different method to measure their suits from previous events in the Games.

“It was a bit strange and didn’t conform to how it’s been done in the past,” Strøm said, according to the Guardian. “It is a bit the result of me being in quarantine and not eating properly the whole week.”

German ski jumper star Karl Geiger addressed the situation on social media and questioned the rules and regulations for female ski jumpers.

According to news.com.au, Germany’s national team coach Stefan Horngacher said the controversy is “not good for the sport … but the rules have to be accepted.”

Horngacher added, “It is just strange that they have been using the same suits (Saturday) and there was no problem.”

Norwegian ski jumping chief of sports Clas Brede Braathen reportedly apologized on behalf of ski jumping and said, “This is something we should have cleaned up in before the Olympics. The sport of ski jumping has experienced one of its darker days today.”

On the few occasions that I have watched ski jumping (almost always from the Olympics), it seemed to me that all their suits flirted with the idea of being a wingsuit, so I'm not surprised they have some sort of regulations to keep it from becoming too blatant, but I wonder how they set those standards. I also think it's pretty suspicious if 5 competitors were suddenly disqualified for ill-fitting suits.

And the model told The Post that she “pities” the fact that Hef is now dead because he “got away” with upending the lives of so many vulnerable women — including her own. Karissa Shannon  says she felt like she was carrying the “devil’s child” after she was unexpectedly impregnated by Hugh Hefner at age 19.

“It was like the devil was inside of me,” Shannon, 32, told the Mirror of Hef’s spawn. “I didn’t want anyone to know I was carrying an 83-year-old man’s child.”

 

The platinum pinup, who regularly appeared on Hefner’s E! reality series “The Girls Next Door” alongside her twin sister, Kristina, allegedly learned that the smut magazine magnate had gotten her pregnant when she took a blood test before undergoing breast augmentation surgery in 2009.Karissa Shannon said she felt like she was carrying the “devil’s child” after she was unexpectedly impregnated, allegedly by Hefner. 

“I was disgusted with my body and felt like there was an alien inside my stomach,” she told the Mirror, insisting her unborn child had indeed been fathered by Hefner.

“I wasn’t having sex with anyone else, so it only could have been his baby,” Shannon continued. “I just wanted to get rid of it as soon as possible. I didn’t want Hef to find out, and he never did.”

Olympians Lisa Buckwitz and Janine Flock are making headlines just as the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing get underway.

Buckwitz, a German bobsledder and skeleton racer, and Flock, who hails from Austria, posed nude for Playboy Germany’s Olympic issue, which dedicates a sultry cover of each athlete.

Buckwitz, who won gold in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, posed naked in a silk green blouse that was unbuttoned, exposing her breasts.

The 27-year-old Buckwitz also wore a gold body chain that wrapped around her waist and dangled across her butt and left thigh. She stood tall in the cover photo, leaning against a mirrored door with her black stiletto pressed against the glass. 

Flock, who competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, posed nude while sitting in a chair, covering part of her breasts with a fur blanket.

In accompanying interviews with Playboy, Buckwitz and Flock discussed the beauty of “natural bodies” and preached that women are deserving of feeling confident in their own skin.
