CBF, Watermen Oppose North Bay Salmon

Chesapeake Bay Mag, Watermen, Bay Foundation Sue Over Indoor Salmon Farm Planned for Upper Bay

A Norwegian aquaculture company looking to build an indoor salmon farm in Maryland faces a legal challenge to its proposed location along the lower Susquehanna River.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation and two upper Chesapeake Bay watermen filed suit April 21 in Cecil County Circuit Court challenging a wastewater discharge permit granted to the planned facility by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE).

AquaCon Maryland LLC plans to produce up to 20,000 metric tons of Atlantic salmon a year at the $320 million facility it proposes to build at a former naval training center in Port Deposit, Maryland.

This is the Norwegian company’s second attempt to open a salmon farm in Maryland. In 2022, it withdrew a bid to build in Federalsburg on the Eastern Shore amid concerns from environmentalists, scientists and local residents that its plan to discharge into Marshyhope Creek could harm Maryland’s only known spawning reach for endangered Atlantic sturgeon, as well as other fish.
AquaCon says its salmon will be produced sustainably on land using a “recirculating aquaculture system,” with hatchery spawned fish raised in recycled-water indoor tanks. The biological waste they generate will be converted to energy to help run the operation.

For the Port Deposit location, MDE gave final approval March 5 for AquaCon to discharge up to 1.9 million gallons of “purge” water daily into the Susquehanna. Purge water comes from tanks where fully grown salmon are briefly held before being harvested for processing and shipment to market. While free of fish waste, the water would contain geosmin, a naturally occurring organic compound that, while harmless to consume, can give farmed fish an earthy odor.

Before the water is discharged, the company plans to filter it and treat it with ultraviolet light to kill bacteria. The MDE permit sets water quality thresholds for the discharge, and it requires the company to offset the nutrient levels in the released water. It also requires the facility to monitor geosmin in its discharge for three years to ensure the levels being released are no higher than what’s normally found in the river.

But the Bay Foundation and the two watermen—Steve Lay of Havre de Grace and Blair Baltus of Essex—say the facility’s discharges of nutrients, sediment and other pollutants will cause or contribute to water quality problems downstream, including low dissolved oxygen levels, increased murkiness and algae blooms.

I would be inclined to trust MDE.

Do Porpoise Point to a Better Bay?

Maryland Association of Counties, Experts: More Dolphins Means a Better Bay

Sightings of bottlenose dolphins in the Chesapeake Bay are on the rise…experts say that means good things for the Chesapeake Bay.

As reported by Maryland Matters, a dolphin expert at the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science said that while dolphins in the Bay are an annual occurrence, dolphins being sighted deeper into the Bay – as far north as Baltimore – is a trend that seems to be increasing.
“It’s a wonderful sign that our beloved bottlenose dolphins are coming into the Bay. They are feeding. They are bringing their young. It signals really good things about our fisheries and that they can find a diversity of food here,” Testa said. “It points to a sign of things improving and things being hospitable for them.”

Researchers divide the Bay into thirds when monitoring dolphins: from the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean to the VA/MD state line; north from that point to the Bay Bridge; and then from the bridge into Baltimore.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration notes that bottlenose dolphins are highly intelligent and can live up to 60 years. Though they are usually found in tropical seawater, it’s not uncommon to see them in brackish water during the summer months. Experts warn that keeping a 50-yard distance when viewing dolphins is the safest method.

You can follow where bottlenose dolphins have been spotted at Chesapeake Dolphin Watch’s website. Or, read the full article from Maryland Matters for more details.

It's only been in the last ten years or so that dolphin sightings in the  bay have become fairly common. Meanwhile, the improvement in the conditions of the Bay have been, to say the least, underwhelming.  Maybe they were enough to encourage dolphins, but I rather suspect a more mundane reason, expanding dolphin populations on the Atlantic seaboard.

PA Finds Federal Models "Exponentially" Overestimate Susquehanna Pollution

From the York Daily Record, New testing data show PA DEP vastly overestimated water pollution in York County streams

In 2019, the state Department of Environmental Protection reported that York County was the second-highest contributor to pollutants entering the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay.

The DEP's estimate was based on computer modeling used by the federal government to determine levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment flowing from the county's streams into the river and the bay.

The revelation prompted the county to improve its water-quality monitoring system, entering an agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey to install a state-of-the-art water monitoring system - the first of its kind in the nation - to collect and track data. Instead of relying upon computer models, the system of six monitoring stations along the Susquehanna would collect and compile test results.

On Earth Day, the county held a press conference to announce the results of the first four years of the decade-long testing program and said they showed that the county's water pollutant levels were significantly lower than the DEP's estimates, which county officials described as "exponentially" overstated.

“We have long suspected that the water pollutant numbers reported by DEP were not accurate, and we now have the data that shows we were correct,” Wade Gobrecht, director of the York County Planning Commission, said at the news conference at Fishing Creek in Goldsboro. “Through this first-of-its-kind collaboration with the USGS, we have real-time data collected over a four-year timeframe, which show unequivocally that our waterways are cleaner than what had previously been reported. Moving forward, we believe this approach will ensure we are relying on accurate data to help drive our water quality improvement efforts."

A wise man once said, "All models are wrong, but some  are useful." If the model is dramatically wrong about York County, what are the chances it's way off about all the other tributaries? This has far reaching implications for the Chesapeake Bay cleanup. Maybe, just maybe, agriculture is not as serious a problem as EPA has been touting, and we need to revisit the "Bay Diet" goals.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the modelers knew, or suspected the models over stated agricultural contributions, but didn't make necessary adjustments because they and/or their bosses wanted more regulation of agriculture.

Beach Report 4/28/25

Days don't get much better than this. Temperatures in the 70s at home, 60s at the beach, a clear blue sky, and basically still air. The trees are pretty well leafed out, but leaves are still light, bright green.
We hit the low tide about right on the nose, and had the freedom to go all the way up the beach.
