Maryland, My Maryland
Instead of targeting gang members and other violent criminals driving serious violent crime in his state, Maryland’s Gov. Wes Moore has signed legislation to ban the sale of popular self-defense pistols. The new law targets GLOCKS and similar guns that can accept a (highly illegal) switch to make them full-auto. Because nothing says tough on crime like disarming the victims of gang violence
If you guessed Maryland’s Gov. Wes Moore is a Democrat, you guessed right. The Dems have gone hard in support for unconstitutional gun control for law-abiding citizens in response to crime carried out by criminals they refuse to prosecute and jail. All while party leadership live with armed bodyguards close by.
Maryland becomes the second state to enact such a gun ban after California. For now at least, existing owners can keep their firearms. Violations carry fines up to $5,000 and up to three years in prison. Anticipating the all-too-predictable move by Governor Moore, the National Rifle Association, Second Amendment Foundation and Firearms Policy Coalition have already filed a lawsuit challenging the law.
GLOCKs are among America’s most common pistols due to their simplicity, durability, and widespread adoption by civilians and law enforcement. Critics of the ban call it symbolism intended to burden lawful gun owners while being ignored by criminals. It’s akin to locking up shampoo and deodorant in stores instead of locking up shoplifters.
Not that I own a Glock, but I hope the Supreme Court will overturn this ASAP.

Flotsam and Jetsam - Jill Biden Thought Joe Was Having a Stroke at Disastrous Debate
But she did nothing about it. Flotsam and Jetsam - Paxton Takes Texas
Well, that was a nice break; after medical stuff in the morning (no, not the eye, but it turns out I don't have skin cancer, yet), a niece from the Left Coast showed up with one day's warning with her boyfriend in tow. They were travelling between a wedding in Manhattan, and a skate park in North Carolina. We had a nice long walk on the beach, and we showed them how to find shark's teeth, not that they found any, and had a genuine Slower Maryland dinner at a low-key seafood restaurant in Solomons, where our only regret was that they had no soft-shell crabs. Gabby was fascinated by her first cousin once removed (I had to check) and her tattoos, and showed off outrageously, only having a minor hissy when we denied her request for cranberry juice for dinner. I persuaded the waitress to bring her a small glass of cranberry juice, which she stubbornly finished off, but admitted that apple juice was the better choice after all.
To no one intelligent's surprise, with the Trump endorsement, Ken Paxton easily beat John Cornyn in the runoff election in the Republican primary for a Senate seat in Texas. This may mean the Republicans have to work harder to keep the seat, but I think it's still likely. Called SMEAR-ULM, it's a high-tech system that can detect skin cancers at their earliest stages by measuring tiny temperature variations at the surface of the skin. Led by INRS professor Jinyang Liang, the research team has published their findings in Nature Sensors. So, do get this over your whole body? My grandfather died on melanoma that started on his ear.
...
At the core of the system is a patch of painless microneedles that deposits specialized nanoparticles just beneath the skin. These nanoparticles form a temporary "intelligent tattoo" that behaves like an array of microscopic thermometers.
When illuminated with near-infrared light, the nanoparticles emit visible light. Crucially, the lifetime of this light emission—how long it lasts—depends directly on local temperature. Because cancer cells consume more oxygen and nutrients than healthy cells, they produce additional heat, which can be detected through this optical signal.
...
With this approach, the researchers successfully detected micro-melanomas as early as four days old—a stage at which they are typically far too small to be identified by conventional imaging techniques.

Wake Up to Find Out That You are the Eyes of the World
According to Hunter/Garcia.
Today is the third week anniversary of the second retina detachment/reattachment surgery in my left eye, and as promised, I'm updating this as a guide for others going through this ordeal.
I'm at week three of the perfluorpropane bubble that supposed to last about six weeks, so presumably that bubble is about half gone (although, at six weeks last time, I still had some residual bubble). Looking straight out, the line of the bubble is near the center of my vision, so it has quite a ways to drop. If I look down, I can barely make out the edges of the bubble around perimeter.
Last Monday I predicted that I would get a glimpse of the mostly focused world through that eye again in a few days. I was right. I started seeing the thin line of sight that was actually passing through fluid and back to the retina on Wednesday. Every day since, the band has grown a little wider. It's still above the center of vision in that eye though, so I'm not really sure how close it is to a decent focus, and at what distance it will really focus. The eye surgeon told me that the eye would be more nearsighted than it was due to the effect of the rubber band (excuse me, scleral buckle) they put around the eye elongating the eye slightly. It should only be a few more days until the band includes the center of vision, and I can really see what it's going to be like. I can already see that it still slants right (my Fox News eye), but I'm not sure how distorted it might be.
Speaking of the rubber band, I continue to adjust to it. I can alway tell something is a little off, like having a bit of grit in the back of the eye, but it's not really painful. I've cut my pain regimen down to 1 or 2 doses of acetaminophen a day; the eye feels pretty decent when I get up, but through the day, occasional eye movements elicit a twinge of pain, not horrible, but something I'd rather avoid. Bending down too far might cause pain too. Eventually, by later afternoon, the acetaminophen is called for and then one for bed, more for arthritis than eyes.
Today the eye drop routine declines to once per day, a steroid to suppress inflammation, and another drop to counteract the steroids tendency to raise eye pressure. I continue to goop on the antibiotic salve they added to the mix. It seems to help some. The white of the eye is still somewhat red and tender.
