Thursday Tanlines

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie have had so many iconic fashion moments over the years. One of the most vibrant on eldest sister Beatrice's part was back in 2010, when the now-mother-of-two was just 21. Stepping out alongside her younger sister at an event in aid of The Elephant Family at Royal Hospital Chelsea. For the occasion, Beatrice rocked a vibrant yellow strapless sundress, showing off her fabulously tanned legs. The striking gown was adorned with a vertical frill along the front and accessorised by the royal with a pair of gold cork wedges. As for her hair, Beatrice styled her iconic fiery locks down and straight.

I wasn't that impressed.

It's Good To Be the King!

Thai king Maha Vajiralongkorn anoints his mistress as his official concubine: Army nurse and former bodyguard becomes the royal consort... in a bizarre ceremony attended by the new queen
Thailand's King has made his mistress a royal consort in a ceremony attended by his new wife, marking the first time the country's modern monarchy has publicly admitted to polygamy.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn, also known as Rama X, made his former bodyguard Sineenat Wongvajirapakdi, 34, his chao khun phra (royal noble consort) in a ceremony on his 67th birthday.

Queen Suthida was sitting next to him throughout the unusual ceremony and showed no emotion despite the fact she now has an official rival for the King's attention.

He poured ceremonial water over Ms Sineenat's head to officially anoint her a concubine during a televised service on Sunday.

Good Show, Harry!

Hearts are aflutter all over the world at the announcement that Prince Harry (of the UK royal family) is engaged. The nice thing about being 5th in line to the throne is that there is no rational expectation that you'll get stuck being monarch, so you can marry a cute American, Californian (even worse),  half-black, half Jewish, actress and divorcee who is three year older than you. At least the Queens Corgis approve, and the Queen's give a damn appears to broken, as is appropriate in a 91 year old.

So who is the Meghan Markle? Although I watched a few episodes of "Suits", I didn't know.

Markle is known for her work in the American TV show “Suits”. Her mother is black and her father is white. And though many publications have reported that Markle’s father is Jewish, a publicist denied that she herself is a member of the tribe.

“Just to clarify…she is not Jewish,” said Chantal Artur, the publicist, in an email, without elaborating.

Markle, who told Elle that she answers the question “What are you” every single week of her life, has not spoken to the media about her religious background or that of her father.

But she has given some serious Queen Esther vibes. Here are 4 kind of, sort of Jewish things about her:

Her real name is Rachel. While we have all met 90-100 wonderful Megans, Meagans, and Meghans at Jewish summer camp, ‘Rachel’ is straight out of Genesis and totally the kind of name your dad would give you if he was trying to subtly imbue your identity with your religious heritage. Plus, changing your name (or in this case, taking your middle name as a stage name) is a classic rite of passage for Jewish performers. Just ask Natalie Hershlag and Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz.

Markle’s first marriage was to film producer Trevor Engelson, a Jewish man from Great Neck, New York. Their wedding involved what The Sun tersely referred to as a “traditional Jewish chair dance”.

She has said that she is sometimes labeled “Sephardic” at auditions. Think about it—36-year old actresses and lifestyle gurus don’t throw around the word Sephardic unless they are Sephardic. She might as well change her name to “Kitniyot Markle”.

Disney has had a frog prince, a lion king, and a royal mermaid, and all we’ve had is the Crusades followed by the Inquisition. A Jewish princess just seems fair.
Best of luck, kids!

Please Butt Out, Your Majesty!

Queen Elizabeth Tells Kate Middleton to Wear Longer Skirts
Kate Middleton’s grandmother-in-law is demanding lower hemlines. According to Britain’s Mail on Sunday, Queen Elizabeth II asked Kate Middleton to ditch the short skirts in favor of more conservative outfits.

Middleton will “deploy a couture wardrobe of day dresses with lower hemlines than she has previously favoured” on an upcoming trip to Australia, the Mail reports. The queen has even lent her the services of her most trusted staff members to dress the Duchess in a less provocative manner.

Queen Liz Throws Charles a Bone

Queen hands over the reigns to Prince Charles - historic step closer to a new king
Her Majesty to hand duties over to Prince Charles in an historic job share which experts say marks a gentle succession.

It is being dubbed the “gentle succession” – as the Queen gradually begins to relinquish some of her traditional duties as monarch.

As she approaches her 88th birthday in April after almost 62 years on the throne, she has agreed to hand over part of her workload in a historic “job-share” arrangement with Prince Charles.

In a royal first, he will be taking on more head of state-style responsibilities as
the Palace starts to make tentative plans for his eventual succession.

Courtiers yesterday described the softly-softly move as “wise” – and “just plain common sense”.
Queen Liz is one of the classics.  She served in WWII as a truck driver, and got the job handed down to her inadvertently when one of her idiot relatives (of whom she has a great many) decided to marry for love, not power.
The first sign of the partial power transfer will be the merging this week of the Queen and Charles’s press offices.

In future any announcements concerning the monarch and her 65-year-old
eldest son will now come from the same source. Palace sources insist the switch will be entirely seamless.
We have long wondered why the Queen has not handed the job off to Charles in the past; I mean other than the fact that he's kind of a stupid boob.  This photo may explain it.
