Save the Planet, Shower With a Friend, In the Cold

From WUWT, Washington Post: Have Cold Showers to Prevent Climate Change

Clearly we haven’t plumbed the bottom of the well of climate absurdity.
Why you should embrace using cold water, almost all the time

Heating water gobbles energy, leading to higher utility bills and more planet-warming emissions.

By Allyson Chiu
May 12, 2024 at 6:30 a.m. EDT

You may not be giving a second thought to setting your washing machine on the hot cycle, cranking your showers to a steamy temperature or scrubbing your dirty dishes under a stream of scalding water.

If you did, you’d find that you probably don’t need to use so much hot water —
and that you could be saving energy and cutting your utility bills. Water heating is responsible for more than 10 percent of both annual residential energy use and consumer utility costs, the biggest share after air conditioning and heating, according to the Energy Department. An American household uses an average of 64 gallons of hot water a day — close to the amount needed to fill an average bathtub— by doing laundry, showering, washing the dishes and running kitchen and bathroom faucets.

While there are home improvements that can help you cut back on the energy it takes to heat water, including installing a heat pump water heater, one easy solution is to switch to cold water.
…

“If you’re wasting cold water to get your hot water, then you’re really wasting both water and the energy resources,” she said. “Those energy resources still come largely from fossil fuels, and so they’re adding to emissions in the environment at a time when we really need to be doing everything we can to reduce carbon emissions.”

The real question in my mind, how is the climate movement going to top this absurdity? Self flagellation every time you are tempted by machine age transport? Drinking your own pee to save water? Comment suggestions welcome, but please keep them family friendly.

Someone needs to follow up with the reporters to make sure they practice what they preach.

Flotsam and Jetsam - Sen. Menendez Indicted for Bribery

I question the timing. . .  Seriously, the feds have been after Menendez for a long time, and failed at least once at trial. It's easy to imagine that new indictment that come on the the heels of Merrick Garland's sad performance at the House Judiciary Committee is an attempt to convince us that DOJ is, in fact nonpartisan. Of course, it could just be a coincidence. CBS, New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez and wife indicted on federal bribery charges.

The 39-page indictment claims that from roughly 2018 to 2022, Menendez and his wife accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars of bribes in exchange for using his power and influence as a U.S. senator to enrich and protect the three businessmen and benefit Egypt's government. Federal prosecutors in New York announced the charges during a press conference Friday morning and said the investigation is ongoing.

"As we allege in the indictment, the senator agreed to do these things and use his power in this way because Hana was paying bribes, because Uribe was paying bribes and because Daibes was paying bribes," said Damian Williams, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

The bribes allegedly included cash, gold bars, mortgage payments, compensation for a "low-or-no-show-job," a luxury vehicle and "other things of value," according to the charging document.

Federal agents found more than $480,000 in cash during a search of the couple's home in June 2022, "much of it stuffed into envelopes and hidden in clothing, closets, and a safe," as well as over $70,000 in a safe deposit box belonging to Nadine Menendez. They also found gold bars worth more than $100,000, according to the indictment.

So compared to the Biden's 20M and counting, this seems kind of small. The gold detail is interesting, but as you may recall, Hunter is on record accepting diamonds  as 'gifts' from the Chinese. It's too bad the Menedezes didn't have a son to serve as a bag man, and turn this all into 'customary influence peddling'. Or, if they did, they chose not to involve him.  Capt. Ed at Hat Hair asks Is time finally up for the Senate's "golden" boy -- and his wife?  Sundance, New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, Chairman of Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, Indicted for Bribery and Corruption Again. According to Spencer Brown at Town Hall This Indictment Against Senator Bob Menendez Is a Real Doozy.

OK, so where was I before I was interrupted by a power failure. Oh yeah, Hat Hair, House Dem to Menendez: Get out. Manu Raju@mkraju "News — Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips tells me that Sen. And to put the cherry on top, there's a tie to the Hunter Biden story. Cutie Pavlich at Town Hall, Hunter Biden Has Entered the Bob Menendez Indictment. House Republicans@HouseGOP, "When an aide to Senator Robert Menendez requested that then VP-Biden host the U.S.-Spain Council's 2010 annual meeting at his official Naval Observatory residence in Washington DC, he contacted Hunter Biden's business partner rather than Joe's White House office." Capt. Ed, "That is rather interesting — and it happened in 2010, much earlier than other evidence in the Biden Inc corruption timeline. Menendez served with Biden in the Senate for two years before Biden became VP, don’t forget, and had been in the House since 1993. Why would Menendez have to go through Eric Schwerin?"

At WaEx, Third IRS official says Justice Department blocked Weiss from charging  in the Hunter Biden investigation. Capt. Ed notes "There’s more, too. Mission Accomplished!

At the UK Mirror, Woman goes 'topless' at Extinction Rebellion protest to 'draw attention' to crisis

An Extinction Rebellion protester went topless in the hope showing her breasts would help "draw attention" to the climate crisis, she has revealed.

Laura Amherst, 31, was photographed without a top on Wednesday as the environmental campaign group descended on London's Oxford Circus for the third day of their two-week "Impossible Rebellion".

Instead of clothes, Laura dressed herself with a message scrawled across her chest, which read: "WAKE UP."

On her bottom someone had written: "ACT NOW".

The Open University politics student also stuck two "XR" stickers over her nipples.

Laura, a vegan from Brighton, said: "I did it to draw attention to the climate crisis facing the planet."

Well, she drew attention to something, anyway. Youtube

Great Moments in Climate Hypocrisy

Still looking good
Breitbart, Climate Change Hardliners Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck Vacation on $130 Million Carbon Spewing Super Yacht in Italy

Pop star Jennifer Lopez and actor Ben Affleck — members of the celebrity elite who’ve spent years browbeating Americans about the peril the planet faces lest we curtail our carbon footprint — are in the midst of a glamorous vacation around the Mediterranean, living on a $130 million carbon-spewing super yacht.

Jennifer Lopez is among the celebrities who have been deemed “super-emitters” by researchers, as she was estimated to have taken 77 flights, travelling 139,187 miles, and emitting 105 tons of carbon dioxide in 2017.

Now, in a seeming affront to their own sacrosanct environmental standards, Lopez and Affleck’s luxe European yacht trip has nevertheless taken them from Capri to Nerano, with a stop in St. Tropez, according to a report by Elle. The pair have been frolicking on the massive yacht for Lopez’s birthday getaway, which kicked off on Saturday in St Tropez, France, reports Us Weekly.

Ecowatch noted that “a superyacht with a permanent crew, helicopter pad, submarines and pools emits about 7,020 tons of CO2 a year.”

I guess I should include a pic of Affect, just for diversity:

The “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” singer also posted photos of herself on the $130 million vessel, which showed off the pricy Foundrae jewelry Affleck reportedly got her for her birthday.
. . .
Lopez and Affleck are reportedly two months into rekindling their romance — a saga with a 19-year timeline attached to it. But Bennifer 2.0’s carbon-gushing cruise around the Mediterranean Sea may cast doubt on their commitment to fighting “climate change.

I don't really care what they do with their money, but don't ever attack me over my carbon footprint.

9th Circus Rains on Kidz Klimate Krusade

The Ninth Circuit on Friday threw out a lawsuit filed by a group of children who say the federal government’s failure to act to curb climate change is endangering their future, finding the legislative and executive branches of government are the only ones with the power to redress the kids’ alleged injuries.

The 2-1 ruling says the children must look to the political branches — Congress and the executive branch — for action, rather than the courts.

Full ruling here: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/6660049-Climate-Ruling.html

From the ruling:
“The plaintiffs have made a compelling case that action is needed; it will be increasingly difficult in light of that record for the political branches to deny that climate change is occurring, that the government has had a role in causing it, and that our elected officials have a moral responsibility to seek solutions,”
“We reluctantly conclude, however, that the plaintiffs’ case must be made to the political branches or to the electorate at large, the latter of which can change the composition of the political branches through the ballot box. That the other branches may have abdicated their responsibility to remediate the problem does not confer on Article III courts, no matter how well-intentioned, the ability to step into their shoes.”

Great Moments in Climate Hypocrisy

UN bureaucrats chow down on burgers – while attacking meat
Reporting right from Madrid, where climate hypocrisy was alive and well at COP-25
Craig Rucker

They came for your car, your light bulb, your dishwasher and washing machine, your toilet, your electricity, your airline flight and so much more. Now you can add your burger and steak to their list of what they want to legislate, regulate or confiscate out of your existence. YOUR existence. Not theirs.

The global warming agenda is the gift that keeps on giving for everyone who wants to control what you do. Dangerous manmade climate change justifies all manner of meddling, in the name of saving the planet. And like the mafia, UN cops want a piece of the action whenever money and power are on the line.

Anti-meat crusaders have been pushing hard in recent months to use climate change to achieve their goal of forcing you into an all plant-based diet. This year their rhetoric became a big part of the dialogue at UN 25th Conference of the Parties (COP-25) on climate change, in Madrid.

They’ve introduced a new buzzword you’ll be hearing a lot of, “peak meat” – as in “peak oil,” or something that we’re going to run out of really soon … not because we’re actually going to run out, but because government policies will make it off limits and drive it into oblivion. As CFACT’s team learned – as usual – it’s do as I say, not as I do.

So ban meat, it is, especially beef. But what do you suppose was the big seller for anyone looking for lunch at the UN climate conference? Burger King! Delicious all-meat American burgers, with not a single one of Burger King’s latest meatless Whoppers in sight.

CFACT met with climate delegates as they lined up for juicy burgers and shot a fun video investigation that you’ll enjoy almost as much as a juicy red steak. Our team of reporters included “Benny the Bull,” who was none too amused at UN hypocrites feasting on his friends at the COP. You can watch Benny in action here. . . .
You can take my burger after you pry my gun from my cold dead fingers.

Great Moments In Climate Hypocrisy - Flying Nun Uses Jet Fuel to Cross Continent for Warming Protest

Sally Field Channels Norma Rae, Arrested In Fire Drill Fridays Protest
This week’s Fire Drill Fridays protest by entertainment elites, labor organizers, and a Protestant minister/activist in Washington, D.C. was noticeably smaller than past protests. The big-name star who came out to support her friend Jane Fonda was Sally Field. Jane ropes in a fellow well-known celebrity or two each week in hopes of attracting a crowd.

Sally Field was arrested during the protest on the U.S.Capitol steps. The arrest appeared to be quite anti-climatic compared to recent weeks. When the Capitol Police moved in to make arrests, Field did as the other celebrities have done – she paraded in front of the cameras and raised her arms to show off the wire tie cuffs around her wrists. A publicist confirmed Field’s arrest. U.S.Capitol Police say 26 adults were arrested.
Sally Field lives in Palos Verdes, a coastal town near Los Angeles, so to get to Washington D.C. to get arrested, she had to get there, and unless she walked, she burned plenty of fossil fuel to get there.

These protests have a weekly theme. This week’s theme had to do with the workers and communities who would be most affected by the transition to a green energy economy – like the Green New Deal.

Field claims her speech was unrehearsed. While I have a hard time imagining that a professional actress would just stand before a group of people and riff about what the alarmists call a climate emergency, maybe she was improvising. “The time is now. We cannot sit back in our comfort zones, on our couches, and wonder, ‘What can we do?’ We can get out. We can do something, in the rain, whatever it takes.” She even reminisced about an old movie role – that of Norma Rae, the textile factory union organizer.

She talked of starring in Norma Rae, the 1979 movie based on a true story of a North Carolina woman, Crystal Lee Sutton, who spearheads a union organizing effort at the textile factory where she works.

She noted that many companies in the textile industry, forced to pay slightly higher living wages to unionized workers ended up leaving to other countries. “They decimated Norma Rae’s, Crystal Lee Sutton’s, communities. They were decimated. And that is because they had no transition,” she said. Field added that with the move to a sustainable economy workers can transition to “a better job, a greener job, and a workplace that will support them and their families.”

You may remember that in 1979 the climate alarmists were convinced we were all doomed to die in the inevitable Ice Age, not that the planet was burning up or flooding.
It's hard to blame celebrities for their ignorance.Their education largely concerned how to pretend to be something they aren't successfully. At some point, they begin to believe their own hype.

She was a cute young thing, once.

St. Greta's Masque Slips

From Stacy McCain, Young Climate Change Maniacs
A few weeks ago, Rod Dreher speculated that Maximilien Robespierre, the French radical who ruled during the infamous Reign of Terror, could have been autistic. The evidence Dreher offered was perhaps not conclusive, but I have little expertise in autism so am not qualified to judge. However, it’s been reported that the teenage Swedish climate-change fanatic Greta Thunberg is autistic, and she certainly has the totalitarian tendencies that would remind one of Robespierre:
. . .In an op-ed published in Project Syndicate, Thunberg and two other far-left climate activists attacked world leaders over their pro-capitalist policies, writing that “the politicians let the profiteers continue to exploit our planet’s resources and destroy its ecosystems in a quest for quick cash that threatens our very existence.” . . .
“My message is that we’ll be watching you. This is all wrong, I shouldn’t be up here, I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean,” Thunberg began. “Yet, you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you. You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words, and yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering; people are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth.”

A few excerpts of Miss Thunberg’s op-ed:
After all, the climate crisis is not just about the environment. It is a crisis of human rights, of justice, and of political will. Colonial, racist, and patriarchal systems of oppression have created and fueled it. We need to dismantle them all. Our political leaders can no longer shirk their responsibilities. . . .
As the science makes clear, we don’t have a single day to lose. . . .
Each and every one of us must participate in the climate resistance movement. We cannot just say we care; we must show it.
Notice the words “need” and “must” here? Notice also the word “crisis.” This is a rhetorical tactic beloved by totalitarians. The problem with which they are obsessed is always a crisis, which demands immediate action — “we don’t have a single day to lose” — and anyone who doesn’t share their sense of dire urgency is dismissed as morally inferior: “We cannot just say we care; we must show it.” In other words, you must either show that you care about this issue as much as young Greta does, by doing whatever it is she demands that you do, or else you are to be classified among the untermenschen, subhuman, without any merit or value. You either join her in the work of dismantling “systems of oppression” or you are Lebensunwertes Leben — “life unworthy of life,” as the Nazis described those whom they targeted for eradication.
I don't really want to focus on Greta's learning disability, the way Stacy does. That just makes it easier to for the folks controlling her to manipulate her.

I'd rather focus on the fact that these rants reveal the "watermelon environmentalism" (green on the outside, red on the inside) driving the movement. The  rants reveal that which most of us know. The climate juggernaut is not about saving the planet from warming (they might think of that as a side benefit, if they really believe in it at all), but rather to encourage the establishment of a socialist state, with complete control over the economy.

Which is really rather strange when you think about it, because socialist countries, China, Vietnam, Venezuela, the old Soviet Union, are notoriously bad environmentally. The people in charge may actually have the power to impose total regulation in such a way as to control greenhouse gas emissions, as well as other environmental nightmares, but they rarely, if ever, do so instead, focusing their efforts on controlling the populace and goosing their industries, which are routinely failing due to lack of incentives.

A Big Week in Liberal Fascism

It's been a big week. Two contributions from Stacy McCain. First, another episode of Crazy People Are Dangerous
Left-wing insanity? Let’s kill people because animals have rights:
An Ohio animal rights activist allegedly stabbed a woman in a church on Wednesday because she was wearing fur.
Police believe that Meredith Lowell, 35, stabbed the woman wearing fur boots based on a prior arrest in 2012, in which Lowell was charged with attempting to hire a hitman to kill a person wearing fur.
Around 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, a babysitter was dropping children off at Fairmount Presbyterian Church in Cleveland Heights for choir practice. Witnesses told police they heard a woman screaming before the babysitter fell to the ground due to a stab wound.
When police arrived at the church, they found the young woman lying on the ground surrounded by blood, clutching her left side. A man was pinning Lowell down to the floor nearby, waiting for police, according to the report.
. . .
In 2012, Lowell allegedly posted several times on social media looking for someone willing to kill a person wearing fur.
“I would like to create an online community on Facebook which would allow me to find someone who is willing to kill someone who is wearing fur toward the end of October 2011 or early November 2011 or possibly January 2012 or February 2012 at the latest,” Lowell wrote, according to the indictment.
After multiple evaluations, psychologists determined Lowell was not competent to stand trial because of mental disease or defect.
An evaluation was completed to determine if Lowell posed a danger to herself or others. Prosecutors said she had passed a handwritten note to jail guards shortly after her 2012 arrest. The note stated that if Lowell were to be released, she would contract another hit man to kill a person wearing fur or even do the deed herself, according to prosecutors.
However, a forensic evaluation later determined that though she was not competent to stand trial, did not pose a risk to herself, the general public or to property.
Why hasn’t this person been locked up permanently? Why does someone with a documented history of violence keep getting turned loose?
and Climate Change Cult Update
Our educational institutions, the major media, and every candidate for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination are in unanimous agreement: Climate change is a “crisis” that requires drastic measures. We must do something — something very expensive, involving untold trillions of dollars of taxpayer money — and do it immediately, or else global warming will make Earth uninhabitable, a lifeless desert planet.
I have never believed this crap, but there are plenty of allegedly intelligent people who believe it with the certainty that a 17th-century Puritan believed in Original Sin, and so these zealots engage in all kinds of bizarre behavior, like giving money to the Pete Buttigieg campaign, or engaging in ridiculous protest stunts:
Spectators rushed the field to stage a climate change protest at halftime of Saturday’s Harvard-Yale game, delaying the start of the second half by nearly an hour and causing the game to finish in near-darkness.
The 136th edition of The Game between the Ivy League rivals went to halftime around 1:40 p.m. ET, and students from both schools occupied midfield after the Yale band finished performing.
Most protesters left after about an hour when they were escorted off by police, who then told about two dozen who remained they were under arrest. The field was ultimately cleared, and the game resumed at 2:48 p.m. ET.
However, the delay led to an issue for the game’s finish because the Yale Bowl lacks stadium lights, and sunset in New Haven, Connecticut, was set for 4:26 p.m. on Saturday.
The darkness problem was compounded as the game went to double overtime, but Yale ultimately got a stop to win 50-43 — and secure a share of the Ivy League title — at 4:38 p.m., before it became too dark to play.
In a statement, the Ivy League referred to the protest as “regrettable.” Yale said that while it “stands firmly for the right to free expression,” it had issues with how the protesters went about their demonstration.
“The exercise of free expression on campus is subject to general conditions, and we do not allow disruption of university events,” Yale said in its own statement.
File this under the category of “Things That Never Happen in Tuscaloosa.” You have to be rich to attend an Ivy League school — it’s $72,100 a year at Yale, $69,607 at Harvard — and only rich kids can afford the luxury of devoting their lives to idiot causes like “climate change.” And I will say, furthermore, that “climate change” is an obsession only for white people. The autistic Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg is the perfect poster child for this movement, which is whiter than a meeting of the Stephen Colbert Fan Club.
From Watts Up With That,  Climate Scientists Reduced to Hiding from Climate Thuggery in Germany
More than 200 people, including dozens of scientists, are in hiding right now in Germany. I am one of them. I can tell you that I am in Munich, but I can’t tell you my hotel. I can tell you that the scientists will meet on Friday and Saturday to share scientific knowledge, but I can’t tell you where. The meeting, in which scientists will present evidence contradicting an asserted climate crisis, was scheduled to be open to the public, but fascist climate thugs have forced us into hiding. The German government, rather than protecting scientists and free speech, has explicitly refused to protect scientists from the threat of violence.

The lineup of speakers at the European Institute for Climate and Energy‘s (German acronym EIKE) annual climate conference is impressive. Among the speakers are scientists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Aachen University of Applied Sciences, University of Bern, Danish National Space Center, Institute for Solid-State Nuclear Physics, Università di Napoli Federico II, and Universität Rostock. Their crime? Delivering talks titled, “The Real Condition of the Great Barrier Reef,” “The Influence of Greenhouse Gases on Climate Research,” “What Role Did the Sun Play in Climate Change,” etc. Seeking to shut down any scientific research and discussion that may endanger a purported justification for its anti-freedom political agenda, a climate activist group calling itself Offenes Antikapitalistisches Klimatreffen München, which is reportedly affiliated with the terror group Antifa, threatened the EIKE meeting, calling on thugs in Germany to mobilize against the conference.
and Fabulous lectures in Holland done: Munich conference forced to relocate
Yesterday, I gave a polar bear lecture to more than one hundred 15-16 year olds at a high school The Hague who gave me their undivided attention. The teachers who invited me were very please with the content I presented: I talked about reading science papers and reports critically, hypothesis testing, and the consequences of being over-confident of one’s assumptions. Two days before that, I saw the polar bears at the Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam and spoke in front of the shark tank to a large audience that included several journalists.

My satisfaction over these successful lectures was short-lived. I found out late yesterday that the organizers of the Munich conference had had their venue cancelled at the last minute due to intimidation by activists from a group called the ‘Anti-Capitalist Climate Society.‘ Apparently, a crowd of about 20 thugs staged a flash mob at the hotel booked to host the EIKE meeting and threatened further havoc and disruption to guests if the conference was allowed to go ahead.

Shamefully, it appears that either the hotel did not bother to call police or the police did nothing about the activists’ threats. Why not? The hotel now claims the safety of their guests are their first priority. However, the increased risk to the safety of these guests was coming from the protestors, not from EIKE members and speakers. Why blame the mild-mannered scientists for being ‘controversial’ rather than the radical activists threatening hotel guests with violence?
But my personal nomination for the best example of liberal fascism (and how to deal with it)?

Hanoi Jane Arrested in D.C. Climate Protest

Another great moment in climate hypocrisy from WaPoo, Jane Fonda plans climate change civil disobedience on the Capitol steps
Two-time Academy Award and seven-time Golden Globe winner Jane Fonda has played many roles, most recently on television as the wife of a gay husband who comes out about his closeted relationship with his best friend.

But this week, Fonda takes on the role of climate activist and brings it to a new stage: the Capitol, where she will demonstrate until she is arrested. And she will do the same thing for 14 Fridays — until she has to film another season of the television drama “Grace and Frankie.”
And sure enough,  Jane Fonda Arrested at U.S. Capitol During Climate Change Protest
Actress Jane Fonda has been arrested on the steps of the U.S. Capitol during a climate change protest. According to WUSA9, on Friday morning, Fonda and dozens of young activists took to the Capitol to demand urgent action on climate change, and after a tense encounter with authorities, the 81-year-old actress was arrested. Watch the video of Fonda’s arrest above.
So, she's going to protest climate change by commuting from her California four-bedroom, seven-bath townhouse that spans 6,679 square feet weekly to Washington D.C. to be arrested every Friday? I'm sure D.C. will appreciate the money from the fines. No carbon footprint from that house, or the weekly transcontinental two way flight. Back to WaPoo:
“I’m going to take my body, which is kind of famous and popular right now because of the [television] series and I’m going to go to D.C. and I’m going to have a rally every Friday,” Fonda said in an interview with The Washington Post. “It’ll be called ‘Fire Drill Friday.’ And we’re going to engage in civil disobedience and we’re going to get arrested every Friday.”
But, thank you for at least reminding us of the good old days when you were young and hot, and not a political activist.
