A 33-metre reinforced concrete vagina has sparked a Bolsonarian backlash in Brazil, with supporters of the country’s far-right president clashing with leftwing art admirers over the installation.

The handmade sculpture, entitled Diva, was unveiled by visual artist Juliana Notari on Saturday at a rural art park on the grounds of a former sugar mill in Pernambuco, one of Brazil’s most culturally vibrant states.

In a Facebook post, Notari said the scarlet hillside vulva was intended to “question the relationship between nature and culture in our phallocentric and anthropocentric western society” and provoke debate over the “problematisation of gender”.

The color seems a little oversaturated to me, but a perusal of her works on line suggest she is obsessed with menstruation.

“Nowadays these issues have become increasingly urgent,” the artist added in what appeared partly to be a reference to the increasingly intolerant climate in Jair Bolsonaro’s Brazil.

That comment was immediately borne out by the angry and often obscene reactions to Notari’s art, as thousands of critics – many seemingly Bolsonaro supporters – flooded the artist’s Facebook page with their ire. “Who do you lefties think you’re fooling? Apart from useful idiots on the left, of course,” one of the more restrained detractors wrote.

Modigliani nude fetches $157.2m at Sotheby's – setting auction house record, but still, slightly better than the Picasso that just sold for $115 Million.

Nu couché (sur le côté gauche), a reclining nude by the modernist master Amadeo Modigliani, fetched $157.2m in New York on Monday night – the highest price in Sotheby’s history. But it failed to beat the $170m record set for the artist three years ago.

Sotheby’s auctioneer Helena Newman led a packed salesroom bidding that started at $125m but stalled at $139m, well short of the 2015 record of $170m (including fees) for another nude, Nu couché (Reclining Nude), at rival Christie’s.

The painting, one of the largest works Modigliani ever made and one of only five of his nudes ever to come up for auction, was hoped to be able to reassure the market that in an industry increasingly concerned with contemporary painters early 20th -entury masterpieces are again finding favor.

That was emphatically true for Modigliani, whose prices have for years lagged behind peers like Picasso and Monet.

After a successful $833m sale of items from David Rockefeller’s estate last week, Nu couché was widely predicted to be a singular star of the New York spring auction season.

Painted in 1917, three years before Modigliani’s death at the age of 35, the picture caused a scandal when exhibited at Modigliani’s first and only solo show at Galerie Berthe Weill in Paris that year.

When a crowd formed outside the gallery to gawp at the works, the police demanded the immediate closure of the show.

The man painted a lot of nudes. It's a tough job, but someone gets to do it. Well, at least the women are mostly recognizable, even if the color palate seems a little limited.

Picasso’s Nude Fetches $115 Million at Rockefeller Auction

A Pablo Picasso painting of a teenage nude with flowers fetched $115 million at Christie’s on Tuesday.

Painted in 1905 during the artist’s Rose Period, “Young Girl with a Flower Basket” was estimated at $100 million, the highest presale value among more than 1,500 lots of the Peggy and David Rockefeller collection.

The painting once belonged to Gertrude Stein, the American writer and collector who was friends with Picasso and other artists in early 20th-century Paris. Her brother Leo bought the painting for $30 in 1905, according to Christie’s.

When the Stein estate came up for sale in 1968, Rockefeller formed a syndicate of fellow Museum of Modern Art trustees to buy it. The estate was estimated at $6.8 million at the time. The members, including William S. Paley, Nelson Rockefeller and John Hay Whitney, agreed to draw numbers from a felt hat to determine the selection order. Rockefeller got the first pick and chose “Young Girl.”

In New York, Pussy Grabs You

or at least your eye: Graphic 1916 Painting of Female Genitalia Appears on Giant NYC Street Ad

Kids, teens, and their possibly red-faced parents strolling through New York City's heavily foot-trafficked Soho neighborhood are getting an eyeful today.

A large hand-painted mural of Egon Schiele's 1916 "Reclined Female Nude" appears on the side of a building at 220 Lafayette Street in the Soho neighborhood of Manhattan this week. Measuring approximately 10 feet by 15 feet, the startlingly graphic mural is being used by the Vienna Tourist Board to promote 100 years of the "Viennese Modernism" art movement:

Clearly visible to the public, the mural appears to be in violation of the relevant state law: New York Penal Section 245.11 -- Public Display Of Offensive Sexual Material.

However, local government apparently approved it.

Via email, PJMedia asked the Vienna Tourist Board if New York City "agreed to allow" the mural. Ava Rollins of Ava Rollins & Associates -- the PR agency representing the Vienna Tourist Board on this campaign in New York -- answered affirmatively:

New York City transit locations weren't the only places that refused to show the advertisements uncensored. According to the campaign site, cities around the world did:

In New York, too, Schiele stimulates a discourse on the freedom of art. After the UK and Germany, the Viennese Modernism campaign is now continuing in the United States from mid-April to mid-May and shows that here, too, the handling of art in advertising is a controversial topic."Still too daring" are the 100-year-old works for New York subway and bus stations, in which not even painted female nipples may be shown, while magazines like "The New Yorker" see no reason to deprive their readers of the world-famous nudes.

Especially spectacular: the uncensored depiction of Schiele's "Lying Woman" in the public space, which would previously only be permitted in Vienna, can be seen on a large façade painting in New York's SoHo. This mural stands in contrast to the sometimes allegedly more open-minded European metropolises, which rejected the motif even in censored form.

It certainly can be seen on a large facade painting in Soho. But what does New York law say about placing it there?

According to an attorney who responded to PJMedia, the mural violates the law. But finding a court willing to enforce it -- if the city was sued for a First Amendment violation based on the mural being "art" -- is another matter.

Woman who breastfed a puppy and ‘fertilised’ one of her eggs with a dog cell wins art prize

A woman who breastfed a puppy and even fertilised one of her eggs with a dog cell has won a prestigious art prize. Maja Smrekar conducted her bizarre projects while living in seclusion with her dogs as part of her ‘K-9_topology’ art experiment.

The Slovenian artist underwent systematic breast pumping in order to trick her body into producing breast milk before breastfeeding a puppy during the piece.

She also took a fat cell from another dog and used it to ‘fertilise’ one of her eggs using a method similar to IVF.

She used a fat cell form the dog, so no dog sperm was used and there was absolutely no way the egg could have become an embryo, which would have been impossible even if a sexual cell from a dog was used.

 That's just not the way any of this works.

Despite the slightly unnerving nature of her art, the critics love it, and have awarded her with the ‘Golden Nica’ at Prix Ars Electronica in Austria.

The jury released a statement saying: ‘The artwork K-9_topology at first sight may engender feelings of shock and possibly even dismissal – the complexity and explicitness of this project is difficult to explain without dangerous simplifications.

‘When considering the awarded artwork, the jury understood that it is important to follow the entire process, as this is an extensive artistic investigation developed through three years in four consecutive projects.’

Smrekar created a video which shows her breastfeeding dogs, sleeping naked next to them and performing the fertilization (it’s a bit NSFW).

In case you lost count, that was 16 F-bombs in less than two minutes, and she twice identified herself as a professor, prompting curiosity as to whether she taught at NYU and what subject. However, online investigators say she is in fact an artist named Rebecca Goyette, an adjunct professor at Montclair State University in New Jersey.

But fear not, mothers and fathers of impressionable Montclair State students. Being an adjunct professor only means she's hired to teach particular classes (Lobster Pornography 101 perhaps), and not a member of the tenured professoriate, and so, nearly impossible to fire. All they really need to do is to not hire her to teach classes in the future.

In the meantime, some more of her "art" so you can see more of what a disgusting person, and bad artist she really is.

Artists Demanding Ivanka Trump Remove Their Artwork From Her Home

A group of artists have come together demanding that Ivanka Trump remove their artwork from her New York City apartment.

According to Bloomberg, the artists, who formed the Halt Action Group, have initiated the "Dear Ivanka" Instagram campaign as a way to protest President-elect Donald Trump through his daughter.

Many of Ivanka Trump's Instagram photos show her posing in front of pieces of artwork in her apartment.

Last I heard, once you sold a piece of art, you were no longer in control of it. That's kind of what the exchange of money was all about.

These guys and gals (and probably everything in between) certainly are working hard to get the Donald re-elected.

And speaking  of  gay liberal assholes, Ivanka Trump Accosted by Passenger on Jetblue Flight.

Ivanka was on a JetBlue flight leaving JFK Thursday morning with her family when a passenger started screaming, "Your father is ruining the country." The guy went on, "Why is she on our flight? She should be flying private." The guy had his kid in his arms as he went on the tirade.

But then, if she flew on a private plane, liberals would accuse her of being elitist. But then, she is an elite.

A passenger on the flight tells TMZ Ivanka ignored the guy and tried distracting her kids with crayons.

JetBlue personnel escorted the unruly passenger off the flight. As he was removed he screamed, "You're kicking me off for expressing my opinion?!!"

No, they're kicking you off for harassing a paying customer.

The husband of the unruly passenger tweeted an hour before the plane took off, "Ivanka and Jared at JFK T5, flying commercial. My husband chasing them down to harass them."

But you have to bake wedding cakes for them.

BTW ... Ivanka, her family and bunch of cousins were all in coach.

I hope The Donald has his sights set on the NEA, too.
