There's An App for That!
A new app helps people track dolphin sightings in the Chesapeake Bay. You can find out where dolphins are and even upload videos of your own sightings. "This time of year is a great time to see dolphins," said Jamie Testa, project coordinator for Chesapeake Dolphin Watch.
Ocean City isn't the only place where you can see Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. From Havre de Grace to Virginia Beach, you can keep track with an app called Chesapeake Dolphin Watch. "They are all from opportunistic sightings. They are just out, enjoying their day on or near the water, they happen to see dolphins and they report them to us," Testa said.
The easy-to-use app was launched in 2017 from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Chesapeake Biological Laboratory. "If you're not fortunate enough to see bottlenose dolphins, you could use the app to explore other people's sightings," Testa said. "You can browse around, look at where the sightings are on the map, as well as images."
Testa said the information is more than just fun to have, it's used to study dolphin movement and behavior. "We're looking at where they go, how far upriver, how far downstream, which creeks they're checking out," Testa said. "Some of the behaviors that we get from the sightings, like it appears that they were feeding, or sometimes we see video footage showing mating behavior."
The app is free — all you need is a name, email and password to register.
I'll report dolphins if I see them, but I'll be damned if I put a new app on my phone to do it.

Bay Health Declines
Chesapeake Bay Mag, Bay Report Card’s C Grade Shows Drop in Health Since Last Year
One year after the Chesapeake Bay’s health grade hit a 22-year high, its report card performance has dropped back down. Researchers are hoping it’s a one-year hiccup within a long-term improving trend.
The University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) released its 19th annual Chesapeake Bay and Watershed Report Card Tuesday. It measures the cleanliness of the Bay and the ecological, economic, and societal state of its watershed. With 2025 marking an important deadline for cleanup efforts, this data gives a snapshot of where the Bay stands and and highlights the need for continued improvement.
The Chesapeake Bay received an overall score of C (50%). That’s five points lower than last year, but indicates a long-term upswing. The watershed received a C+ (57%), with a good score for ecology and moderate scores for economy and society.
Although this year’s data shows a short-term decline, it’s been slowly improving since the 1980s. “We think extreme weather may have had some impact on the scores this year,” said Dr. Heath Kelsey, Director of UMCES Integration and Application Network. Last year was the hottest year on record, with extreme rain patterns contributing to pollution. Prolonged summer droughts, punctuated by runoff events, can cause pollutants to accumulate in waterways. Prolonged droughts followed by runoff events may have contributed to this year’s lower scores.
Most Bay health indicators show long-term improvement: scores are higher for dissolved oxygen, aquatic grasses, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen. Chlorophyll a and water clarity scores have declined, with water clarity receiving an F (18%). This issue remains “mysterious,” according to Bill Dennison, Vice President for Science Application at UMCES. Bay scientists are still investigating the cause of this persistent murkiness, which isn’t fully explained by phytoplankton or sediment.
Water clarity impacts other indicators, too: with recent high temperatures, aquatic grasses are in danger of burning out. Clear water enables them to handle the heat, but cloudy water traps heat and prevents photosynthesis. “The synergistic effect of turbid water and high temperature is a death knell to these plants,” said Dennison. “Water clarity is something we really need to work on because it will build more resilience for the Bay.”
Six regions in the Bay have shown improvement: the Elizabeth, James, and Patapsco and Back rivers, the upper western shore, the upper Bay, and the lower Bay. The lower Bay had the highest grade (B) probably due to its tidal exchange with the Atlantic Ocean and the health of its James River tributary in Virginia. The upper Eastern Shore was the only region with a declining score. UMCES will partner with the Delmarva Land and Litter Collaborative later this month to investigate the reasons for that downward trend.
I take a pretty dim view of these grading systems. They have high annual variability as a result of weather fluctuations, so it's only in the multi-year long run that you can see improvements or declines. As with most people, I judge the Bay health on results that mean something to me. Rockfish (aka Striped Bass) populations have been steadily declining for years. Crabs took a serious turn for the worst this year. The bright spot from a resource point of view, is that the populations of oysters are about a the best they've been since I arrived in 1985.

The Wednesday Wetness
Data centers are not just a Northern Virginia problem. The vast and growing presence of these warehouse-like buildings housing the world’s computing power has implications for quality of life, land, energy and water across the Chesapeake Bay region.
This was the main message of a half-day workshop on May 19 hosted by the Choose Clean Water Coalition at the start of its annual conference held this year in Harrisonburg, VA. The “kickoff” event featured experts mostly from Virginia speaking about the environmental impacts of data centers, which they have seen firsthand — and which they say are imminent for every state in the region.
Northern Virginia is the global epicenter of data center infrastructure and home to about half of all data centers in the U.S. This distinction is not new but has garnered increasing attention as the global race to power artificial intelligence begins to strain regional power supplies. Researchers at the workshop warned that continued unrestrained growth of data centers in the Potomac River basin in the coming years could strain the region’s water supply as well.
Data centers use water primarily for cooling the computers. It seems to me that cooling is rather clean use of water. Certainly the water could be reused in some other way, either agriculture if not human consumption. Or they could recycle it on site with cooling towers, resulting in much lower water consumption, but requiring the disposal of mineral rich blow-down water.

Pennsylvania Lad Tackles Major Bay Problem
A Lancaster County science fair champion has earned international honors for developing a fishing lure that won’t contribute to the problem of plastic pollution in waterways.
Hempfield High School junior Ethan Albright won third place last month in the materials science category at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Columbus, Ohio, for his project “Reel Problems. Reel Solutions: Combating Microplastics in Aquatic Ecosystems with Biodegradable Fishing Lures.” The same project took first in the earth and environmental science category at the North Museum Science & Engineering Fair in March.
During the awards presentation in Columbus, Albright said he had an inkling that maybe he’d secure fourth place, so when a competitor was named the fourth-place winner, he lost hope of receiving an award at all. “I heard my name, and I just threw my hands on my head,” Albright said. “I was superduper surprised.” He was joined by Warwick High School senior Ansh Dwivedi, North Museum’s 2025 grand champion, in competing among 1,657 students from 63 countries from May 10-12.Which is about a quarter of what similar commercial baits would cost.
For his project, Albright developed an entirely biodegradable and edible fishing lure that is similar to a traditional lure. Albright said the total cost to manufacture and package the biodegradable lure in biodegradable packaging comes to $1.70 per pack of 10.
The worm-shaped biodegradable lure could substitute for traditional soft plastic fishing lures that tend to break off the hooks of anglers and sink to the bottom of waterways, degrading into microplastics over time, according to a description of Albright’s project on the International Science Fair website.Soft plastic lures get a lot of use in Chesapeake Bay. Trollers often use big paddle tail shad baits in their umbrella rigs. Individual plastic baits range in size from about 1 to 0 inches or more. They come in a wide variety of shapes and colors, and even plastic mixes, ranging from softish Bass Assassins to the much firmer Bass Kandy Delights, and even the soft and stretchy Z-Man baits, which will stand up to even the dreaded teeth of Bluefish.
The lure is made from a “biopolymer hydrogel recipe” using sodium alginate, calcium lactate, gelatin, vegetable glycerin, cornstarch, distilled water and natural coloring (for cosmetics), according to Albright’s project description.
As for them being a major environmental concern? I don't see it. I occasionally find one or two on the beach, but much less that tampon inserters. When I use them on a boat, the used, torn plastics get saved for trash, although, to be fair, Bluefish chop off and consume (maybe) a fair number.
I'd be willing to try them, for the right price.
