I mentioned it in passing yesterday morning but it blew up later in the day. It seems quite some time ago, a young British lad, Henry Nowak either got in a spat with a Sikh, Vickrum Digwam, 23 and was stabbed 4 time with the 21 cm (8 inch) Sikh 'ceremonial' knife. Sikhs are legally allowed to carry knives that ordinary British citizens are not, due to a religious requirement that Sikhs always carry a knife. Digwam's family called Police and accused Nowak of racism, and they put Nowak in handcuffs and chatted with and released Digwam. Meanwhile, Digwam's mother was called to the scene and took the dagger away, cleaned it and hid it. Nowak bled out on the street while the police ignored his pleas. The police actions were recorded on body cams, the footage of which was released two days ago, leading to riots. British police have apparently been explicitly trained to take minorities sided in racial incidents. After investigation, Digwam was charged with murder, and his mother with being an accessory. Chesapeake "Zone of Death" Expected to Be Small This Year

 WBOC, Chesapeake Bay’s annual “dead zone” expected to be relatively mild in summer 2026

The Chesapeake Bay’s “dead zone” is expected to be relatively mild this summer, according to a forecast published this week by various Maryland and Virginia institutions. The Below-average nutrient runoff is expected to mean better conditions for Bay marine life.

Scientists at William & Mary’s Batten School & VIMS, FlowWest and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science shared their findings this week.

If you're reading this, I'll give you credit for basic knowledge of what the "zone of death" is, and what causes it. 

The forecasted dead zone is expected to be one of the smallest on record — ranking in the bottom 10% since monitoring began in 1985 and roughly a third smaller than average.

“This year’s forecast suggests that the Chesapeake Bay may experience one of its milder dead zones in recent decades,” said Aaron Bever, senior managing scientist with FlowWest. “Lower nitrogen loads entering the Bay this spring are expected to translate into better oxygen conditions for fish, crabs, oysters and other Bay life this summer.”

According to this forecast, this year’s mild outlook is largely due to low river flows and reduced nitrogen pollution entering the Bay from earlier in the year. According to the Chesapeake Bay Program, when heavy rainfall does occur, rainwater travels to rivers and streams and picks up nutrients, which can fuel algal blooms.

Well, according to real scientists, too. 

Summer weather could still affect the dead zone's size and duration. Scientists note that heavy rain, heat waves or prolonged calm periods are hard to predict and could shift the size and duration of the dead zone.

Behind Green Eyes

The continuing saga of my recovery from my 2nd retinal detachment/reattachment surgery in my left eye. I'm currently at week 4 in the new recovery. Last week, I reported being able to glimpse a bit of the world more or less focused, above the meniscus of the bubble (actually below, because the eye image is backasswards), but too high to catch the center of vision, and predicted that by this week the center of vision would be in the focused zone (looking forward, not up or down), and I'd be able to report on how it was looking.

I was right (remember, I've been here once before). I can now see forward with a band that includes the fovea. It ain't pretty. As before, the vision is slanted to my right, maybe worse than before, and somewhat distorted, like on crumpled paper.  If I work at it a bit, I can get both eyes to agree on the location and shape of an object directly in front, but away from the center, not so much. It's a bit disorienting to try to put both views together, so I close the left eye a lot. As I was told to expect, as a result of the rubber band around it, the left eye is now considerably more near sighted that it was, with its unaided focal distance of about a foot. It's not really very much use for reading at this point, although it can, alone, if necessary.

I really have no more pain from the rubber band (excuse me scleral buckle) they put around the eye to help the retina stick, just a slight feeling that there's something back there. I'm still a little leary of lifting heavy weights or bending down too far, it might cause a twinge of pain.

In theory, I did my last round of eye drops this morning. Now it's on it's own to continue improving. I'll continue with the antibiotic salve for a while though. It seems to help. 

Barring the unforeseen, I don't expect a dramatic change by next week, the window of focused vision will widen, but since the bubble isn't expected to entirely dissipate for at least two or more weeks, the zone of better vision should be wider, and the two eyes maybe working better together, I hope.

USAToday, Meteor explodes over Boston as sonic boom rings out across Massachusetts 

A fiery object disintegrated as it fell off the coast of Boston, causing a series of sonic booms that could be heard in numerous towns and cities across the state.

Eric Fisher, chief meteorologist with CBS News' Boston affiliate WBZ-TV, reported that a meteor fell off the coast of Boston around 2 p.m. EDT May 30. According to a report filed with the American Meteor Society, Fisher's description indicated that the phenomenon was “definitely not lighting.”

“It looks the object disintegrated off the southern coast of Massachusetts,” the AMS report adds. “The sounds were heard in numerous cities/towns across eastern MA.”

Nearly 50 witness reports were filed to AMS with sightings of the meteor across eight states and Canada.

“Sam,” a 22-year-old orthopedic surgeon in training, told Wired that he got the idea to sell AI-generated images of a young woman in a bikini while scrounging for money in school — and trying to save up enough to emigrate to the US after graduation.

He turned to Google’s Gemini AI for advice and decided to create a “hot girl” crafted specifically for the “MAGA/conservative niche,” after the software told him that “the conservative audience (especially older men in the US) often has higher disposable income and is more loyal,” according to Wired.
