Tuesday Tanlines

Padma Lakshmi
At Indian Express, Why Indian skin tans so quickly
Celebrity dermatologist Dr Jaishree Sharad, in a recent chat with host Priyali Mahtani, explains why Indian skin tans so quickly, while breaking down the role of eumelanin – the pigment responsible for the brown tones in our skin.

Priyali asks her if it’s patchy skin where the face is a different skin colour from the hands, chest, or tummy, or if it’s a characteristic of Indian skin types more than any other? Is it something unique that is commonly found with our Indian skin tone?

Deepika Padukone

Dr Sharad explains why Indian skin tans so quickly: it’s because of
the pigment called eumelanin. Melanin is of two types: eumelanin and pheomelanin.

“Now, melanin is something that is giving us colour. So if you have eumelanin, you’re getting a darker shade. If you have pheo, you get more red shades. We have shades of brown. So when you have more eumelanin, you tan sooner. So you don’t need to make an effort to tan,” she says.

Flotsam and Jetsam - The Beat Goes On

But not much stands out, mostly a continuation of the previous week's Be, the insurrection in Minneapolis, Epstein recriminations, Zohran sends the homeless blankets with his name on them, but fails to provide shelter. Stuff like that.

Matt Lamb at LI, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Asks Police to Surveil ICE, Report Them For Prosecution, "Johnson wants Chicago’s police officers to focus their attention on documenting alleged crimes by ICE agents." From Twitchy, Anti-ICE Protesters in Minneapolis Blocking Roads, Checking IDs, and Running Plates. Then two agents tackle him and force his head down against the curb. After the child is already on the ground, pinned by two armed adults, another agent brings out a K9, for what reason exactly? . . " Readers added context. "The clip shows Anaheim Police Department officers apprehending a teen suspect trying to evade arrest for robbing a jewelry store. A couple of the dates are slightly off, but everything checks out.Trump registered for the draft after his 18th birthday on June 24, 1964 (draft dodgers don't register*). He was given an S-2 (college) deferment on June 28, 1964 (perfectly legal, not a draft dodger). His S-2 status was renewed on Dec 14, 1965 (legal, not a draft dodger), and he was then classified on Nov. 22, 1966, as 1-A (available for service). Dec. 13, 1966, his S-2 was again granted to attend Wharton (legal, not a draft dodger). His final deferral was granted on Jan. 16, 1968. After graduating from Wharton, he was reclassified 1-A on July 9, 1968. He went to his Armed Forces Physical (something a draft dodger probably would not do) on Sept. 19, 1968, and was categorized as 1-Y, disqualified for service except in war or national emergency (due to bone spurs in both heels). He received a high draft lottery number and was never called up. On Feb. 17, 1972, after the abolishment of the 1-Y classification, he was classified 4-F (not qualified for military service)."

Flotsam and Jetsam - Putin Comes to America

So where was I before being rudely interrupted by taking the weekend off to travel to Pennsylvania? Oh yeah, on Friday, President Trump was scheduled to meet with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin, in Alaska, with the goal of settling the Russian war against Ukraine. It went off as scheduled, with Putin being feted to a show of force as F-35s and a B2 stealth bomber while still on the tarmac. Stacy McCain takes note that After Alaska Summit Meeting, Putin Confirms Ukraine War Was Biden’s Fault. “I’d like to remind you that in 2022, during the last contact with the previous administration, I tried to convince my previous American colleague the situation should not be brought to the point of no return when it would come to hostilities,” Putin, speaking in Russian, said according to a translator. “And I said it quite directly back then that it’s a big mistake.” Matt Margolis at PJM, Did This Remark at Trump and Putin’s Presser Send Democrats Into Meltdown? Flotsam and Jetsam - Big Balls Beaten Badly, Trump Threatens DC Takeover

John Sexton at Hat Hair reports Trump Threatens to Take Over DC After 'Big Balls' Lives Up to His Name, "The incident in question happened early Sunday morning. A woman in a car was approached by some teenagers who demanded she hand over her car. A bystander saw what was happening and got involved. He wound up being beaten bloody by a group of teens but stopped the carjacking attempt. This afternoon, President Trump highlighted this case on Truth Social saying crime in the city is out of control because teens aren't held accountable. His post also included a photo of the man who was beaten up. . . And shortly after that one of the man's friend's posted that he'd taken the photo. He identified the DOGE employee was Edward Coristine, aka "Big Balls" who made a lot of news when he was with DOGE. He describes the group Coristine fought with as "8 thugs." Ben Whedon at JTN, Trump threatens to federalize D.C. over lax approach to minors committing crimes. ""If this continues, I am going to exert my powers, and FEDERALIZE this City. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" he concluded." Sean Davis @seanmdav "End home rule and re-federalize D.C. immediately. It is long overdue, as D.C. is clearly incapable of governing itself. The days of D.C. holding the government and the country hostage need to be over." Quote Hans Mahncke @HansMahncke, "Judging by how Trump 2.0 has approached things, this isn’t a warning to clean up. It’s a warning that D.C. will be federalized. No one seriously believes the people who wrecked it are now going to fix it. This is just Trump laying the groundwork for what’s coming. x.com/RapidResponse4…" From PM, Elon Musk backs Trump over federalization of Washington, DC after DOGE staffer brutally beaten: Elon Musk @elonmusk "A few days ago, a gang of about a dozen young men tried to assault a woman in her car at night in DC. A @Doge team member saw what was happening, ran to defend her and was severely beaten to the point of concussion, but he saved her. It is time to federalize DC." Matt Vespa at TownHall thinks Democrats' Sudden Freakout Over Gerrymandering Is Starting to Make Sense... and a CNN Guest Made a Keen Observation That Nuked the Dems' Narrative Over Texas Gerrymandering  “These new five potential GOP-controlled districts are all majority Hispanic. The Republicans are leaning into the victories that Trump had with Hispanic voters in 2024 and saying, ‘Hey, we're going to bet on ourselves,’” Ungar-Sargon said. “It's amazing to me that the Democrats are just kind of running away,” she added." Also,  This Is How You Know Texas Dems Are Losing the Gerrymandering Messaging War. Paul A. Szypula @Bubblebathgirl "Pritzker 2025: Says redistricting is evil. Pritzker 2022: Redistricts Illinois." DC_Draino @DC_Draino "Blue states with ZERO Republican House seats: Massachusetts Rhode Island Vermont New Hampshire Hawaii New Mexico Connecticut Delaware. Blue states with ONE Republican House seat: Maryland Oregon Maine. Blue states with 2-5 Republican House seats: Colorado Minnesota Illinois Virginia New Jersey. After that, you only have California & New York The reason Democrats are screaming for Texas to stop redistricting is because Democrats have almost nothing left to gerrymander They already rigged the map years ago and hate to see Republicans actually fighting back." At LifeZette, Supreme Court Signals Interest in Major Voting Rights Case That Could Reshape House Control. Christian Heiens @ChristianHeiens, "I cannot stress to you enough how earth-shattering it would be for the Supreme Court to strike down Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The electoral cornerstone of the Postwar Liberal Consensus would be gone overnight, and with it, the Democratic Party's ability to contest the House of Representatives as we know it. Between this and the potential mid-decade redistricting in a few other GOP-controlled states, Democrats would not be able to flip back the House of Representatives even if they ruthlessly gerrymandered every Republican out of California."
