The latest attempt to get Trump revolves around the recent attacks on drug smuggling boats coming out of Venezuela, the charge being that 1) No proof is being offered that that are actually drug smuggling boats and 2) the attacks are illegal because . . . reasons (fulfilling Mark Kelly's illegal order claim, to disobey) and 3) allegedly, in one, the first attack, Hegseth ordered no survivors, and the military struck the boat a second time, with survivors clinging to the wreckage, in contravention to the rules of war. Forbes, Meet The Palm Tree That Locals Swear Can Walk — A Biologist Explains

Deep in the rainforests of Central and South America, there lives an iconic palm tree known as Socratea exorrhiza, or “cashapona.” For generations, local tour guides have told visitors an eerie story: that this palm doesn’t just stand in one place. By growing new roots and abandoning the old ones, it virtually “walks.” According to some legends, it can even walk as far as 20 meters (65 feet) a year.

Of course, when scientists studied Socratea exorrhiza, what they found wasn’t supernatural. The palm doesn’t “walk” in the sense that it literally uproots itself. Instead, its unique root system is a sophisticated evolutionary adaptation to difficult ground.

The notion that Socratea exorrhiza can “migrate” across a forest floor was likely first formalized in the 1980s by John Bodley and Foley Benson, who, in a study published in the journal Biotropica, speculated that the palm’s roots might allow it to “walk” away from its original germination spot.

This idea, which was likely just an analogy, caught on like wildfire among rainforest guides. And as most mysterious stories do, it’s evolved disproportionately over the years: it’s since been said that the palm regrows new stilt roots in places where it thinks conditions are better, while its older roots die off. Some locals even claim that the palm can crawl from 2 to 3 centimeters (0.8 to 1.2 inches) per day, or up to 20 meters (65 feet) per year.

But as alluring as this story is, science has largely challenged this interpretation. In 2005, tropical ecologist Gerardo Avalos and colleagues conducted field research on the walking palm, including measuring root growth and trunk position, and found no evidence of any actual “movement.”

According to their 2005 study, also published in the journal Biotropica, the trunk of the palm remains fixed: its new roots grow, and its old roots die. In other words, the theory that this palm can “walk” is nothing more than an urban legend; Avalos’ study ultimately proved that the tree’s base doesn’t move at all.

These palms were quite common in parts of Costa Rica. Our tour guide told us the story. I didn't believe it then, but was too polite to throw the bullshit flag.

A seasonally cold, clear day, topping out near 40 F. Fortunately, the wind was very slight.

It was a blow-out tide, almost a foot lower than the astronomical prediction. As blow-outs often are, it was mostly sand, but there was some productive gravel.

Of the ten teeth, this 1 1/2 inch White Shark that Georgia found well above the waterline was the best. Look at the pretty colors on that one! Curses, foiled again.

Professor Williams’s theories can be summed up in his academic paper (yes, there’s an academic paper on this) “Skateboarders of Color and the (Co-)Emergence of the DIY Ethos in Skateboarding,” which was published earlier this year. The argument:

Skateboarding has long been connected to a ‘Do It Yourself’ (DIY) ethos. Conventionally, this connection has been understood through skateboarding’s relationship to punk rock, hip-hop and other forms outsider art like graffiti and zines. Frequently, general discussions of DIY ignore issues of race and therefore the [sic] code DIY as unmarked whiteness. This has been the case with skateboarding as well. In this article we explore what the DIY ethos in skateboarding might mean to skaters of color. By attending particularly to an Indigenous and Black experience of skate culture, we argue that BIPOC skaters can bring their own local sense of DIY embedded in their own BIPOC communities to skateboarding. In this sense we argue that skateboarding is not just a venue for a local expression of DIY, but we should think of this BIPOC co-creating skateboarding’s DIY ethos. We argue the need to reconsider the role that racial identity plays in skateboarding DIY and DIY cultures in general encouraging scholars to consider the distinction between those that opt into a DIY ethos coming from positions of privellege [sic], and those that come to it by necessity because of societal marginalization.

Skateboarders should resist this nonsense. In his 2012 book, The Most Fun Thing: Dispatches from a Skateboard Life, skateboarder Kyle Beachy makes the point that skateboarding is one of the few things in life that doesn’t lie to you.

Cold and windy! Struggling to reach 40 F, with a 20 - 30 kt wind (although it had calmed a bit by time of these pictures). 

And a very low tide. 

Not the most productive day for fossils, there was too much sand and not enough gravel, but I did find this odd little tooth. I'm going to hazard a guess it's a smaller Mako or Hastalis shark, that still has some small cusplets. 

And the verdict from the pros is in via Facebook: Striatolamia striata, an extinct sand tiger shark from an older, Eocene, sediments.
