Flotsam and Jetsam - Gay Goes Away

But first, a holdover, Jazz Shaw at Hat Hair finds Harvard Newspaper Backs Claudine Gay, But...  "The editorial board at Havard University’s student newspaper, the Harvard Crimson, decided to give university president Claudine Gay a bit of a holiday present this weekend. (I’m fairly sure you can’t say “Christmas present” at Harvard these days.) The embattled administrator had already been taking fire and facing calls for her resignation over her antisemitic remarks before Congress and then a mounting pile of evidence that she committed plagiarism multiple times over the course of her career. But the paper’s editorial board stood up for Gay this weekend in an op-ed where a majority of the members concluded that there was no reason for her to resign. And yet they included a caveat saying that it did indeed appear that she was guilty of plagiarism, but she should still keep her position. (NY Post)"

But alas, 'twas to no avail. The Crimson announced HARVARD PRESIDENT CLAUDINE GAY RESIGNS, SHORTEST TENURE IN UNIVERSITY HISTORY. Hat Hair's Capt. Ed comments  "Bloggers hardest hit? One of us will have commentary on this later, no doubt, but I’m not convinced that this will improve matters" and John Sexton picks up the ball,  Claudine Gay Resigns After Disastrous Six-Months (Update). Althouse catches the NYT playing Republicans pounce, Claudine Gay resigns. "The NYT reports. The latest accusations were circulated through an unsigned complaint published Monday in The Washington Free Beacon, a conservative online journal that has led a campaign against Dr. Gay over the past few weeks. The new complaint added additional accusations of plagiarism to about 40 that had already been circulated in the same way, apparently by the same accuser...." Spencer Brown at TownHall, Harvard President Claudine Gay to Resign. Inty, at his substack, Claudine Gay Has Gone Away "Is this the dawn of a new day?" Capt. Ed reads Breaking: Gone Gay by Steve Hayward at Power Line, and retitles it Gay's Resignation Letter Borders on Satire,  "Steven’s not kidding. There isn’t a scintilla of remorse in Gay’s resignation letter, and she blames her ouster on racism rather than on her demonstrable incompetence and scholastic fraud. Indeed, she even tries to give herself credit for fighting “hatred” on a campus deluged by unchecked Jew-hatred and intimidation. It’s almost performance art." Spencer Brown, Claudine Gay's Resignation Letter Is Exactly What You'd Expect. At Twitchy, ROFL! Claudine Gay's Resignation Letter Hilariously FAILS Plagiarism Checker and NO, We're Not Joking. It does read like she filled in a Microsoft WORD template. At Da Blaze Harvard president Claudine Gay resigns in disgrace, paints herself as a victim of 'racial animus' "Gay painted herself as a victim, suggesting she found it frightening “to be subjected to personal attacks and threats fueled by racial animus.”" Capt. Ed, "You mean the way Gay allowed Jewish students at Harvard to experience without any intervention at all?"

NewsBusters catches CNN's Egan: Harvard Pres. Didn't Steal Ideas, Was Simply 'Copying Other People's Writings'. Capt. Ed, "Talk about distinctions without differences! “Copying other people’s writings without attribution” is the core definition of plagiarism. To suggest that this isn’t stealing is to assert that Gay could give the writings back at some point and negate the violation. That certainly is a curious position for a MEDIA COMPANY to take; I’d bet they wouldn’t be nearly as understanding if someone copied THEIR material without attribution. That would (rightly) result in a cease-and-desist letter, followed by litigation." From Twitchy IT'S ALL A PLOT! NYPo explores Who is Alan Garber, the interim Harvard president replacing Claudine Gay? Capt. Ed summarizes "An interesting choice for more than one reason. Garber appears to be the antithesis of the DEI-drenched recruitment process that produced Gay last year, for one thing — an older white man in Academia. Garber also comes at least in part from the hard sciences, where his academic track record will be guaranteed to stand up to scrutiny. Garber was critical of Harvard’s response to the eruption of anti-Semitic hatred and intimidation on campus two months ago too. Garber’s too old (nearly 70) to take the job on a more permanent basis, but this has the feel of a choice designed to douse fires of outrage for a while to allow the board to decide its next recruitment strategy." Too old? Both leading candidates for POTUS are older (not that it's a good thing).

Hat Hair's Beege Welborn notes Always Classy, POTATUS: Happy New Year Everyone But Scummy MAGA-Types "For a Great Uniter and Man of the People, this little gem of a Happy New Year’s greeting from the *check notes* President of the UNITED States stands up there in the all-time pantheon of suckage, right next to his heart warming “Winter of Sickness and Death” wishes of late, unlamented Christmas yore." Joe Biden@JoeBiden, "Happy New Year, everyone. In 2024, we’re ready to keep delivering for the American people and fight back against MAGA extremism. Let’s finish the job." At Twitchy, Biden Learns the Hard Way 'MAGA Extremists' Are DONE Putting Up With His Hate and Anti-America Rhetoric. Althouse, "How the Biden campaign hopes to make 2024 less about Biden and more about a contrast with Trump." "That's the headline at CNN for a column by Edward-Isaac Dovere, and it's the opposite of what I think Biden should do, which is to run on his own merit and not on the demonization of Trump." What merit? Jordan Boyd at Da Fed sees Biden Welcome 2024 With More Lies About His Flailing Economy. Nick Arama at RedState thinks KJP's Latest Remarks May Have Just Made Things Worse for Biden on Corruption Accusations, again. "George Washington law professor Jonathan Turley pointed out one of the issues as well that could apply to these new remarks as well. "In addition, President Biden has enlisted White House staff to actively push challenged accounts of his conduct and attack the House Republicans’ investigative process. Such acts could legally bootstrap prior misconduct into his presidency under abuse-of-power allegations."" At Da Caller, Biden Admin Watered Down Vetting Process For Chinese Illegal Immigrants, Email Shows. They bribed him, fair and square. AlphaNews, Biden admin doles out $600 million to activist groups, universities for ‘environmental justice’. Capt. Ed, "This is absurd, but unfortunately this is how the Left gets funded in the US. It’s utterly corrupt. Biden is using taxpayer funds to fund the orgs that will end up working to get him re-elected, whether they do so overtly or otherwise."

At NYPo, Mayor Eric Adams wants to expand NYC’s migrant bus crackdown to planes, trains. Some sanctuary city! Ilya Somin at The Volokh Conspiracy, Are Hispanics Following the Path of the Irish? "Economic policy commentator Noah Smith compiles evidence that the today's Hispanics are following a similar path to that of Irish-Americans in earlier eras of American history." Also, the Italians.

Dave Strom at Hat Hair, She Was Convicted of Voter Fraud--Then Appointed as Deputy Mayor "Do the powers that be approve of voter fraud? Watch what they do, not what they say. They will always tell you that it doesn’t happen, and if it happens it is wrong. But they do everything they can to make it easy to do and difficult to find, and as you can see in the case of Gloria Torres, they also reward the person who does it when they can get away with it." Catherine Englebrecht, True the Vote Defeats Fair Fight, Stacey Abrams, Marc Elias, and the Biden Department of Justice in Landmark Election Case in Georgia Federal Court "A federal court in the Northern District of Georgia today affirmed that citizens have the right to lawfully petition their government in support of election integrity without fear of persecution or prosecution."

At The Babylon Bee, Epstein List Hangs Itself Moments Before Release. Capt. Ed, "Once again, perhaps a little too close to reality for satire."

ABC, Trump appeals Maine 14th Amendment election disqualification to state Superior Court. Capt. Ed, "They have to appeal in Maine first before resorting to federal court. Until they face serious consequences, they'll keep running the same plays, only bigger, bolder and more openly.

Dave Strom calls Alphabet Activists the Most Entitled, Obnoxious People on Earth  A great case is this privileged activist Tommy Dorfman, a celebrated trans activist who uses his male name (no deadnaming, at least), is clearly male, but bullies a working guy for “misgendering” him. Dorfman complains that he is suffering human rights abuse when the poor gate agent is just trying to do his job. Dorfman is a celebrated actor who sponsors products for major brands, and yet he feels the need to get a guy fired for saying “sir.” Why? Because he can, and having the power to destroy others has always been attractive to a certain kind of tyrannical personality. The destruction itself is the goal."
