Palm Sunday

 with Tika Camaj.

Coconut rhinoceros beetles are going after more than just coconut and palm trees.

That is according to the Hawaii Farm Bureau and Hawaii’s CRB Response organization, which says damage is spreading to crops like banana and sugarcane.

Those who drive past the palm trees in Waikele can not help but notice the barren-looking crowns that often have a ‘V’ shape.  “They’re going to be about 45 degree angle ‘V’ cuts with some scalloped edges,” CRB Response outreach associate Arisa Barcinas said. “So, that’s one key sign of CRB damage.”

There are also bore holes to look out for and not just on palms — banana, hala and pineapples have all fallen victim in Hawaii. “We’ve had reports of sugarcane damage. It does range, it’s not just palms,” Barcinas said.
