No Shit!

WUSA 9, No sewer overflow escaped collapsed pipe for the first time since Jan 19 sewage spill into the Potomac, DC Water says

For the first time since a 72-inch wastewater pipe burst along the Clara Barton Parkway, DC Water engineers say there are no sanitary sewer overflows escaping from the damaged section of the Potomac Interceptor since the incident happened.

DC Water says the pipe collapsed on Jan. 19. The burst led to roughly 200 to 300 million gallons of raw sewage pouring into the Potomac, according to the Potomac Riverkeepers.

Well, good. Better late than never.

Flotsam and Jetsam - Don Lemon Indicted, Arrested in Church Attack

As Stacy McCain notes THIS! THIS! I VOTED FOR THIS! 100%. "If the Trump administration never accomplished anything else, this would be sufficient cause to call it an overwhelming success." At NYPo, Ex-CNN host Don Lemon arrested for Minnesota church invasion while in Los Angeles covering Grammys. "Lemon spent the night in jail and is expected to make a first appearance in court sometime Friday, according to Brian Stelter, the chief media analyst for Lemon’s former network." Capt. Ed at Hat Hair, BREAKING: Don Lemon Arrested On Federal Charges. PJM's Matt Margolis, BREAKING: Don Lemon Arrested by Federal Agents for His Role in Church Mob. Driscoll at Insty, THE WORST OF DON LEMON (Post-Arrest Edition): "On Friday, it was reported that Don Lemon was arrested for his part in the invasion of a St. Paul, MN church. Matt Finn @MattFinnFNC, "One of the victims of the St. Paul church says agitators prevented them from getting to their children, one thought it was a shooting, and others weren't able to leave. Rule 5 Saturday - Katharina Nahlik

This week's Rule 5 winner is Katharina Nahlik:
Katharina Nahlik was born on 19 August 1995, and grew up in the Mariahilf district in Vienna, where she attended the Vienna Bilingual School, and made one year abroad in Malaysia for when she was 15. She studied environmental engineering at BOKU university in Vienna.

In 2014, Nahlik was crowned Miss Vienna, and has worked as an international model since.
In 2019, Nahlik married US diplomat Shilo Mazepa in Spoleto, Italy. Amina Dagi, a former Miss Universe contestant, was her bridesmaid. Later that year, the couple moved to Washington D.C. In 2021, she filed for divorce and the two are now separated.

Since 2022, Nahlik had been in a relationship with plastic surgeon Dr. Leonard Hochstein while he was still married to Real Houswives of Miami castmember Lisa Hochstein. They were engaged in July 2023. In September 2024, Lenny and Katharina ended their engagement. However, in December 2024, Hochstein reproposed to Nahlik.
I volunteer to buy her an nice juicy 5 Guys hamburger, but I don't think money is the issue.

I Suspected As Much

The Guardian, ‘A bombshell’: doubt cast on discovery of microplastics throughout human body

High-profile studies reporting the presence of microplastics throughout the human body have been thrown into doubt by scientists who say the discoveries are probably the result of contamination and false positives. One chemist called the concerns “a bombshell”.

Studies claiming to have revealed micro and nanoplastics in the brain, testes, placentas, arteries and elsewhere were reported by media across the world, including the Guardian. There is no doubt that plastic pollution of the natural world is ubiquitous, and present in the food and drink we consume and the air we breathe. But the health damage potentially caused by microplastics and the chemicals they contain is unclear, and an explosion of research has taken off in this area in recent years.

However, micro- and nanoplastic particles are tiny and at the limit of today’s analytical techniques, especially in human tissue. There is no suggestion of malpractice, but researchers told the Guardian of their concern that the race to publish results, in some cases by groups with limited analytical expertise, has led to rushed results and routine scientific checks sometimes being overlooked.

The Guardian has identified seven studies that have been challenged by researchers publishing criticism in the respective journals, while a recent analysis listed 18 studies that it said had not considered that some human tissue can produce measurements easily confused with the signal given by common plastics.

There is an increasing international focus on the need to control plastic pollution but faulty evidence on the level of microplastics in humans could lead to misguided regulations and policies, which is dangerous, researchers say. It could also help lobbyists for the plastics industry to dismiss real concerns by claiming they are unfounded. While researchers say analytical techniques are improving rapidly, the doubts over recent high-profile studies also raise the questions of what is really known today and how concerned people should be about microplastics in their bodies.

“Levels of microplastics in human brains may be rapidly rising” was the shocking headline reporting a widely covered study in February. The analysis, published in a top-tier journal and covered by the Guardian, said there was a rising trend in micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) in brain tissue from dozens of postmortems carried out between 1997 and 2024.

However, by November, the study had been challenged by a group of scientists with the publication of a “Matters arising” letter in the journal. In the formal, diplomatic language of scientific publishing, the scientists said: “The study as reported appears to face methodological challenges, such as limited contamination controls and lack of validation steps, which may affect the reliability of the reported concentrations.”

One of the team behind the letter was blunt. “The brain microplastic paper is a joke,” said Dr Dušan Materić, at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Germany. “Fat is known to make false-positives for polyethylene. The brain has [approximately] 60% fat.” Materić and his colleagues suggested rising obesity levels could be an alternative explanation for the trend reported in the study.

What we learn from history is that we don't learn from history. My own field of science (trace element biogeochemistry) was plagued with problems of false positives. It turned out that to get accurate trace element measurement require fanatical attention to anti-contamination  efforts.

A particularly telling example is the saga of Fritz Haber his attempt to pay off Germany's WWI debt by extracting gold from seawater. Now, Fritz Haber is a giant among chemists. His development of the  Haber process for making ammonia from nitrogen gas and methane allows mankind to sustain it's current population. Of course, for him it was a method to make nitric acid for gun powder and explosives, but it did earn him a Nobel Prize.

His preliminary attempts to extract gold from seawater suggest that it might be a viable method to get gold and pay off post-Versailles war debt. Via Google AI, "The German Atlantic Expedition (1925–1927) on the research vessel Meteor aimed to study the South Atlantic, famously utilizing sonar to map the seabed and revealing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Chemist Fritz Haber initiated this effort, hoping to extract gold from seawater to pay off Germany's post-WWI war debts." Of course, it turned out that the initial attempts were false positives, and that it didn't work on a large scale. Seawater contains so little dissolved gold it is almost impossible to measure, even today.

We relearned those lessons in the 1980s when reliable measurement of some elements in seawater began to be made. I assume the people who measure low levels of organic contaminants went through the same learning curve.

Maryland, My Maryland

Georgia's amazing 4.5 inch Megalodon tooth
From Pop Sci, Megalodon could become Maryland’s official state shark

In a state better known for its delicious seafood and as the home of the United States Navy, there’s a new effort to create the country’s first state shark. Earlier this month, Maryland State Senator Jack Bailey and House Delegate Todd Morgan filed SB135 to designate the megalodon (Otodus megalodon) as the official state shark.

While the mighty megalodon is not swimming along the shores of the Bay State now, the enormous prehistoric shark relative once dominated the shallow seas that covered Maryland and the rest of the Atlantic coastal plain. They lived about 23 million years ago (during the Miocene Epoch), before going extinct about 3.6 million years ago. They were about three times bigger than a modern great white shark. Some estimates put them upwards of 82 feet long and 66,000 pounds. They primarily ate whales and the ancestors of dolphins and manatees, while their young hunted seals.

But why should “the meg” be the state shark of Maryland? The beaches along southern Maryland are full of megalodon fossils—particularly their giant teeth. Megalodon teeth have been found in several counties including Anne Arundel, Caroline, Calvert, Charles, Dorchester, Prince George’s, and St. Mary’s. Citizen scientists and paleontologists alike have also uncovered teeth from other non-megalodon prehistoric shark species including Galeocerdo contortus and Galeocerdo triqueter (similar to modern day tiger sharks) and Sphyrma prisca (a relative of the hammer head shark).

My 3.5 inch from 2021
Although we do, rarely, find Megalodon teeth, I would hardly call the beaches of southern Maryland  "full of megalodon fossils." We find one or two a year at best, along with about 4,000 other shark's teeth. A Meg is a rare prize for a lot of walking and looking.

Calvert Cliffs State Park in southern Maryland is a common spot for digging up teeth and the Calvert Marine Museum has a number of fossils on display. Paleontologists believe that Maryland was once a whale and dolphin calving ground and nursery for hungry megalodons. A roughly 15-million-year-old fractured whale vertebrae and tooth uncovered in Calvert Cliffs even shows evidence of a possible megalodon attack.

“Turns out no state has a state shark, so we’re hoping Maryland is the first,” Dr. Stephen Godfrey, curator of paleontology at southern Maryland’s Calvert Marine Museum, told WMAR Baltimore. “To me, this is such an iconic animal. I think it’s time for megalodon to take center stage as the first shark designated as a state shark.”

If the bill is approved by Maryland’s General Assembly and signed by Governor Wes Moore, the designation would take effect October 1, 2026. The megalodon would join Maryland’s other state symbols, including the Baltimore oriole (state bird), jousting (state sport), and walking (state exercise).

I don't know what the value of being the official state shark is, if you've already been dead for 10 million years, but whatever.

Silver, Gold Prices Plunge on Trump's Fed Pic

As a result of the penny project, we got back into watching silver prices. After I retired, I got bit a bit by the silver bug. I bought a few bullion coins, but the price stayed stubbornly around $20 an ounce for years, and I kind of lost interest. When I started updating our family coin collection, inherited from both sides of our family, I checked it out, and was shocked to see silver around $50! Since then it has been steadily (well, more or less, like all commodities, it does bounce around) rising, until yesterday it passed $120. Then today I looked, and it back down to $80 ish! What happened? CNBC, Silver drops 30%, gold tumbles 10% as Trump Warsh pick eases Fed independence fear, triggers dollar rally.
Gold and silver prices plunged Friday, as President Donald Trump’s nomination for the next chair of the Federal Reserve, Kevin Warsh, appeared to relieve concerns about the central bank’s independence and sent the dollar soaring.

Spot silver was down 30% at $80.55 an ounce, trading at its lows of the day.

Meanwhile, spot gold shed around 11% to trade at $4,812.71 an ounce. Gold futures dropped 9.1% to $4,980, trading below $5,000.

The sharp moves down were initially triggered by reports of Warsh’s nomination. However, they gained steam in afternoon U.S. trading as investors who piled into the metals raced to book profits. Metals were also under pressure as the dollar spiked higher, making it more expensive for foreign investors to buy gold and silver and spoiling the theory that metals would replace the greenback as the globe’s reserve currency.

The dollar index last traded around 0.8% higher.

So, just think about this. Until 1964, dimes, quarters, half dollar and dollar coins were minted with "coin silver " a 90% silver, 10% copper alloy, which constituted the value of the coin. Subsequently, except for bullion coins, the coins were minted with nickel alloy cladding on top of a copper core (much cheaper). The 1964 and earlier dimes contained 0.07 Troy ounces of silver, which, yesterday at one point was worth $8.40 from the silver value alone. Today, only $5.60.  Still, it buys about the same candy bar that it did in 1964, when a 1 oz Hershey chocolate bar cost about a nickel. Today, $2-3.

FWIW, I give the chances of the vinegar attack being staged about 10%. You'd have to be a real sucker to do that knowing you'd be caught and charged assaulting a congresscritter. However, if she begs for his release from the charges, or fails to file needed charges, the chance goes up to 95%.
