Palm Sunday

 With Ines Trocchia:

Florida is full of palm trees — they line our beaches, neighborhoods and even parking lots. But in North Fort Myers, one palm picked a very unusual place to put down its roots.

A full palm tree is sprouting straight out of a storm drain in front of the CVS on Hancock Bridge Parkway.

The unusual sight was first brought to WINK News through our WINK Listens event in Cape Coral. A viewer, who wanted to stay off camera, told us about the tree and raised concerns about what it could mean for drainage in the area.

When we looked back at Google Maps imagery from 2022, the drain appeared clear — no greenery. But today, the palm is standing tall out of the concrete.

Lee County tells WINK News the storm drain is on private property, meaning CVS is responsible for its maintenance. CVS tells us they are checking with their landlord about the tree and whose responsible.

We've also reached out to the landlord and state to ask the same question and will update when we get more information.
